Socks Books

I gave this book to my grandson for Christmas. He's only 9 months, but we all love reading it to him. I made him a sock monkey and gave him the book to go with it.

Oscar is a little sock monkey that belongs to a little forgetful girl named Susie. Susie's class is having a pet show. She brings her rabbit but forgets the key to the cage. Oscar sets out on a mission to deliver the key to the girl's school! Will he make it!






The story was very cute. It gave life to stuffed animals. A lot of kids think that their toys can do think like humans can.



Yes. It has a message that even little kids can do BIG things!

My 2.5-yr old (now 3) loved the cars and still loves 'em, although the book doesn't get as much use. My 3.5-yr nephew and my daughter always fights for these tiny pocket-sized cars. They move well on hard surface. We make a lot of wooden structures/ bridges to play with the cars. The book contains some good creative ideas. I bought one for my nephew too! The price offered in Amazon is great, much better than local retailers.

We bought this book, and at a later time the chicken socks' tape book, for gifts on airplane trips. You know, wrap one gift per hour or two to keep the kidlets occupied? My son, barely four at the time, showed no interest in this book on the plane...but months later, it became a favorite for a few months, great to keep him busy while I made dinner or at doctor's offices or while his big sister did her homework. So who can tell? Maybe he was too excited on the plane or too distracted. Overall, a good buy and I'd do it again. Certainly worth the money.

There are some nice patterns in this book, but yarn substitution is a very subjective thing. That's one reason you need to do sample swatches when you use a different yarn than is called for in the pattern to see if you like the effect a particular yarn has on a pattern.

Some of the examples of yarns not to use were obvious given the type of pattern/garment, others much less so. Equally-sized close-up pictures of the "wrong" type yarn right next to the "correct" type on the same page instead of following pages might have helped make the authors' cases. When the authors stuck strictly to wearability concerns, the information was quite helpful, on color and texture of the pattern in a different yarn, not so much.

One noticeable bias was not to use mohair-type yarns for lace patterns, which is interesting because there are lots of patterns out there that use mohair because that fuzzy fluffy effect is precisely what the designer wants.

3.5 stars. I actually preferred several of their patterns with the yarns they said were unsuitable--go figure.

Author bios are found in the first pages of SKEIN FOR SKEIN. Abbreviations and glossary section is located in the back of the book along with a techniques section which is the how-to do a chain stitch or cast-on, etc. Of course, there is a yarn weight chart, explanation of skill levels, metric conversion and a resource page.

The projects themselves contain a couple of paragraphs about the project followed by a skill level, size, materials list, gauge and an explanation of any special stitch used in the project. The instructions themselves are clear and easy to follow. The color photo of the finished project will help you be sure you are on the right path as you work the project.

Finally, each project has what is called "Alternate Picks and Pans". This shows two choices of yarns --- one good and one NOT good. This is nice if a particular yarn calls to you. You will know BEFORE you put all that hard work into it that the yarn is best suited for another project.

I loved this book and corresponding poster. For some truely unique and colorful socks...this is the book for you! The truely great thing about these socks is that when you do where them they really make a statement!They are easy to follow instructions and make great gifts for all those non-knitters out there. Any socknitter will love to add this to their collection! Now...start knitting!

Very creative patterns and a good exploration of the toe-to-top sock method. Also a very creative sort of book, with a companion poster that illustrates the socks. I am still not sure which one I want to knit, however. Maybe none of them--just use the designs for inspiration.

If you aren't au fait with the toe up knitting method, you'd be better off getting the Magnificent Mittens book along with this book; the explanation of toe up knitting is the same as tip-down-mitten knitting. The illustration and explanation is better in Anna's mitten book. Plus you can adapt the mitten patterns to the sock methods. All in all, this is a fun book that can expand your sock knitting horizons. Anyway, get it as these books evaporate into out-of-print land all too fast.

Chicken Socks is a great resource for stimulating the love of poetry for children of all ages. Children can relate to the books sense of humor- as well as understand that not all poetry must be sentimental, serious, or complicated. I use it in my classroom, and the kids eat it up!

This book was both interesting and funny. It's like mixing apples and orranges,some stories are sweet, funny and entertaning, and then some are sour and funny in an unpoliticly correct way. But in anyway that it is funny this book will always make you laugh. So, get covered with laughs and fun and add this book to your shopping cart.

Terry Jones delivers a great collection of poems for all ages. It entertains our whole family as we drive in the car. Somewhere between Shel Silverstein and Monty Python's silliness, this one will make you laugh!

My daughter received this for her 5th birthday. She loves it! The dogs are cute and so are the clothes. It's basically paper dolls but with dogs. The case on front can be taken off of the book so she can carry them around with her. This isn't the first Klutz item we've had and love them all.

This book is great. I think that just like the Jacks book, it provides quality illistrations and teaches you how to be a master of one of the greatest games of all time!
