Helpful tool for dedicated parents

This is, in my opinion, a well written and helpful book that offer practical solutions. It raises important issues such as allowance systems, effective communication skills, consequences and limits, contains helpful advice on teaching children problem solving skills, memory skills, makes point that every child is different and what worked with one may not work with his sibling! It will require an effort from the parents to develop the system, make the decisions and stick to them (this is the stage I am now on, so I cannot report on any progress yet). I hope that when I start implement the advise given in the book, it will help to eliminate a lot of pressure from the everyday family life.

I knew I'd spent too many years picking up after my kids because it was "easier" than fighting them to do it. I thought this book would provide me with some practical strategies to begin teaching them to pick up after themselves (they are 3 and 6). I found this book read like a textbook. The information is good but it's very much presented like a college lecture. I had also hoped to get some ideas about what was age appropriate for them to do and didn't find much information along that line. Borrow it from the libary (that's where mine will be going).

I Highly Recommend This Book!

Elizabeth Crary really impressed me. This book was very well structured with content logically presented for parents to assist their children in developing skills and then developing self-motivation. She provides ample references to other authors for further reading as well.

Our child is in pre-school. We have just about finished potty training, and have told him how proud we are when he makes. I learned in this book how important it is that we verbalize that we are proud of him and he should be proud of himself as well.

Most of the material in the book is for children older than preschool but there is plenty here for preschool parents to think about. We will refer to this book for many years to come. I am definitely interested in reading more books by Elizabeth Crary. I highly recommend this book!

I recommend this book all the time to friends who complain about having lazy kids. My son's hardly perfect, but he's done his own laundry since he was 4! This book helps you figure out what to reasonably expect and how to get the whole family to participate (so that you don't have to nag). It's great--even if cleaning house isn't your life's focus. It has tons of information about learning styles, developmental stages, and so on.

No parent wants to raise a child who is a slob, a couch potato and a brat. But how to help them grow from a toddler to a responsible teen is a daunting task. This book helps parents get a gameplan for teaching their children self-respect as well as respect for others. It also reduces frustration by helping you see what is realistic for different ages. With large doses of humor and many practical tips, this is a VERY helpful book.

Your children's college roommates and future spouses will thank you... :)

cute dolls with great instructions

I found this book incredibly well written. The instructions are very clear. All the stitches you need are explained in the book. The dolls start very simple and get a little more complicated but there's nothing a determined beginner or child couldn't master quickly. There are lots of patterns ranging from babies, santa claus, a teddy bear, a clown, and even a beautiful ballerina.

Simple, fun and tremendously helpful for newbies!

I debated about whether or not to buy this book for quite a while. One day, I happened to see it on sale for a great price so I snatched it up. I couldn't be happier! I must say, before I bought this book, I didn't know much about hand-sewing at all. This book teaches basic hand stitches with easy drawings and diagrams. Even though the projects are incredibly simple, it's helped me tremendously in other advanced sewing projects. Also, the dolls are ADORABLE. Who would've thought you could make precious little dolls from socks? LOL I've already made a couple of them and I'm so pleased at how they look. I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you're already a seasoned seamstress, you'll still have fun making these precious little dolls in your spare time.

What a find!

This is a great book, full of different and delightful dolls, babies, women, men and animals. I can't stop looking at it! Get yourself a soft sculpture needle and be glad the dryer eats one of every pair of your socks.

Not a lot of variety

Yes, there are 30 dolls in this, but the primary variation is how you finish the face and the color or pattern of socks you use.
Also note these are dolls ONLY, there is not any animals or other creatures. The slight exception is two of the sock dolls are in costume, one is a lion.
There are good directions so if you are looking for only dolls then you may find some fresh ideas.
I expected more variety and some unique creations.

When I was a kid, I made sock dolls. They were simple and I didn't have to do too much sewing before I could start playing. This book took me back to those happy days and also gave me some new ideas. There are "character" dolls (including a ballerina, a family, and Santa Claus) that children would probably enjoy. There are also lots of cute baby and child dolls. Many of the socks used for the dolls pictured in the book are "unusual" socks (patterned or textured) and the dolls are designed to be made of "new" socks (unlike my childhood toys that I made of the odd socks who had lost their mates). The dolls in this book are quick and relatively easy to make - a good way to satisfy a child quickly with a "new toy". Also, older children who know how to sew could make many of these with a little help from an adult friend or family member.

Valerie Simonson is true blue. Her book only give a smattering of her qualities.
I and my departed wife read the origional manuscript before it went to the publisher.
There are a few things that we thought were important in the book that were taken out.
I hope some day Val will add these to another book so that the readers will not feel that there is something missing
My departed wie used to baby sit Valerie, and loved her dearly. When we found out that she was trying to promot her new book I went on line around the world telling people about it, because we new that was a TRUE story and an adventure that only a couragous and desperate woman could do. Valerie is contagious...if you were to ever meet her you would never forget her. She radiates. Keep up the good work Val ....We LOVE you --- Bill and Olive in Mexico,

This book is not what I expected. I was hoping to learn why Yoga became so important to the author. Rather the book focused on a journey of self discovery. The connection between the two, to me, was tenuous. The concept was interesting but it missed the mark.

The great value of the Raja Yoga disipline.

The book isn't realy about wearing an 0RANGE COLORED pair of Sox, but the value of discovering RAJA YOGA and learning to meditate with it. I was so impressed with the book that I'm now in Calgary and had TEA with valerie last evening. Today she left for INDIA TO THE HEADQUARTERS OF Raja Yoga for their annual conference. Valerie still teaches the disipline here in Calgary as a volunteer. She related that her parents (slowly and reluctantly) took up the practice and it has really transformed their lives as it has hers.

I got this as one of the distractions for a 6 hour airplane ride. Although my 2 1/2 year old daughter loved it, it was not the best thing for her. She only wanted to take ALL the caps off at one time and hold it. Unfortunately, she was unable to put the caps back on by herself so this became a messy project. Better for older kids!!

Want to occupy your 3-4 year old? Give him or her this book. The star shaped marker is perfect for chubby little hands, and has multiple colors, and the pictures are entertaining and easy for little ones to color. When was the last time the kids were allowed to color in a book? This is a GREAT gift or just a little past time, and once the book is done, the marker lives on to color again and again.

My daughter got this for her 6th birthday. She loved making the cuties and it was nice to have the little extras that you could punch out (crowns, scepters, etc.) and glue onto the dolls. They include a nice assortment of items to put on your dolls, but I would add my own stuff for even more options. I didn't like their offering of floppy chenille for the arms, but that could easily be rememdied by using your own wired chenille sticks or other items. Lots of winter day/rainy day fun.

What's worse? A hole in your heel or a hole in your heart?

Review Date: 2007-11-04
Identical twin soccer socks, Jacques and Spock, are as different emotionally as they are alike physically. After adventurous Jacques is washed with the whites and bleached, he's tossed under the living room sofa by his owner, a boy who wears only orange. Timid Spock is left alone in the sock drawer, lost without the support of his brother, while Jacques has the time of his life partying with other lost toys and clothing. Although initially relieved to be free of his needy brother, Jacque realizes that a hole in his heart is worse than a hole in his heel. He figures out how to get back to the sock drawer when a glass of indelible carrot juice is left on the coffee table. Kids will laugh at the silly socks and identify with a boy who is probably as messy as they are.

Jacques and Spock are a pair of brother orange socks. They belong to a boy who loves the color orange and only has items that are orange. One day the brothers get separated in the laundry and Jacques gets mixed with the whites. He's now white! When the boy find Jacques in the drawer and discovers that he's now white he throws him out. Will Jacques ever find Spock again? Will the little boy turn Spock into a puppet? Read Jacques and Spock to find out!

The book was very funny. It kept my interest well.

This book has so many fun and interesting patterns I'd like to make every one of them. The patterns are so unique...for example...the penguin ones on the front...you knit the beak so it stands out from the socks along with the "wings" and "tail". I love this book!

Wonderful patterns and clear instructions. The only reason it didn't get five stars is because some of the patterns call for wrapping stitches at the heel. If you are not familiar with that method it takes a little getting used to. But it is explained and once mastered (I haven't yet) I am sure you will enjoy this book.

I was lent a copy of this book, and quickly realised that I needed to buy my own copy. Now I have a copy, I need to decide where to start.

With new found enthusiasm, and quite a bit of optimism, I have decided that I am going to knit socks. This book will make the task easy: not only does it include some patterns that are great fun, it has clear instructions that will enable me to substitute yarn, work out the difference in international shoe sizes, and knit for feet unseen. Most importantly, though, it will allow me to experiment.

Apart from the children's socks (for which I have no end of suitable candidates) I can see some of these socks finding their way to various feet all around the world. Socks with cables, with dots, in plain colours and stripes: who can resist? Rainbow toes, penguins and tiny little bears: just what my friends and family members need, even if they don't know it yet.

Best of all, most of these patterns don't require perfect eyesight. What is required is patience and the ability to keep count when following a pattern.

And, if the recipients don't want to actually wear them, then I guess they can become sock puppets.

A BLOODY GOOD READ

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT FORMER LAUGH-IN GIRL JUDY CARNE. SHE TAKES US ON A TRIP THRU HERE EARLY LIFE IN ENGLAND WHERE SHE STUDIED BALLET TO HER NEARLY FATAL CAR ACCIDENT AND HER ADDICTION TO DRUGS. ALONG THE WAY SHE TELLS OF HER SHORT MARRIAGE TO BURT REYNOLDS AND SOME OTHER HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP. I REALLY ENJOYED HER TELLING OF HER TIME ON LAUGH-IN AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEHIND THE SCENES. TIRED OF JUST GETTING WATER THROWN ON HER, JUDY LEFT THE SHOW TO PERSUE A CAREER IN THEATRE, WHICH WASN'T A MAJOR SUCCESS. THE MEAT OF THIS BOOK IS HER ADDICTION TO DRUGS AND THE RECOVERY. ALONG WITH HER INNER STRENGTH TO BEAT HER ADDICTION, SHE ALSO HAD TO DEAL WITH A CAR ACCIDENT IN WHICH HER NECK WAS BROKEN AND SHE HAD TO BE PLACED IN A BODY CAST ALONG WITH A METAL HALO SHE HAD AROUND HER HEAD FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. IT IS A VERY INTERSTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK. JUDY CARNE IS A VERY TALENTED LADY AND SHE DESERVED BETTER. THIS A GREAT READ FOR ALL LAUGH-IN AND JUDY CARNE FANS.

I developed a "crush" on Judy Carne from her very first appearance on Laugh-In back in the late 1960s and regretted that I had never seen her earlier sitcoms in the early and mid-1960s. I have recently acquired numerous DVDs of Laugh-In which I enjoy thoroughly whenever she is on screen. I have also managed to locate videotapes of her 2 earlier appearances in "Tthe Man from Uncle" as well as other guest appearances in Bonanza and other shows. I just cannot get enough of her. Reading her book, I could not help but admire her courage when her whole world seemed to be crumbling around her. I always thought of her as a cute little pixie, seeming to be so fragile, but her story demonstrates so much of her inner strength. She gives the reader a good idea of what it is like to experience the ups and downs, the insecurity, the determination it takes being a gal in show business, not exactly a bed of roses. God bless you, Judy, wherever you are.

Juicy and Delightful

What a treat! Remembering Judy Carne and all the rest of the Laugh-in cast, this is quite a trip down memory lane. The book tells how she got started in show business and her early marriage to Burt Reynolds. She shares what it was like being married to him. Let's just say they're not married anymore ... Her honesty with her heroin addiction is to be admired, along with all she went through physically when restrained to a steel neck cage after an accident. Not only is her life interesting, but the little nuggets of Hollywood inside stories are just as good. Pick up this juicy morsel if you can find it.
