My four-year-old loves this story of a lost sock and a lonely mitten who become friends. We borrowed it from the library repeatedly before I finally broke down and bought her her own copy. It still gets read at bedtime two to three times a week, two months later, which is quite a compliment, usually she gets bored with any book after a few weeks and it just sits on the shelf.

great book. we howled!

Sometimes you come across a book where everything seems to be in place at first glance. Nice illustrations, appealing characters, catchy title. It's the kind of book you would expect kids to be drawn to. Upon reading, however, there's just something missing. "Smitten" is this kind of book. Underneath the cover, "Smitten" suffers a lack of development that puts the breaks on an otherwise solid effort.

Mitten meets Sock by the park after he falls out of his owner's laundry basket. After introductions, the two decide to comb the big city in search of their pairs. Their adventure takes them to the laundromat (where Sock shrinks), and down into the subway (where Mitten unravels). They end up in the yarn store, where Sock finds a way to put his friend back together. In a world of matching pairs, Sock and Mitten agree that they match as well as the best of `em.

David Gordon comes to the table with a resumé that would make most folks not show up for the interview. He has written and illustrated a number of books. He's one of the illustrators taking part in the huge "Truck Town" series by Jon Scieszka. In addition to his print portfolio, Mr. Gordon has worked on a who's who of American children's DVD collections. Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Spongebob, the list continues. The digital illustrations for "Smitten" are bright and smooth with a soft quality. If it were possible to paint with modeling clay, this would be the result. He's good.

"Smitten" is a book that kids will be anxious to read, which is a good thing. However, the tension in this adventure tale is never quite there. The characters go from one even to the next without making the reader invest in what's happening. That is the downfall in this otherwise pleasant picture book.

The title is the best part of the book, from a librarian's point of view. The good thing about all the parts that don't fit/are left unaddressed is that the kids can hypothesize.

Nicely written and illustrated, perfect story.

I love this book! Great look at friendship and adventure for the little set. Nicely illustrated and wonderfully expressive characters (not small feat for a sock and a mitten). Good story line that is more fun with every page. Nicely thought out early lessons about diversity and acceptance. Would highly recommend it!

Not an avid reader of detective or Christian books, I yet thoroughly enjoyed this one. A powerful mix of God and grit, with a terse wit and suspenseful plot that keeps you turning the pages to see how the believable and likeable Joe Box triumphs over evil.

I gotta tell ya, I'm not a Mike Hammer fan. Opening a book with a prologue often annoys me, even if shrieking bullets and first person narrative ARE outstanding hooks...when well done.

Be warned: this tale is done well. Fast paced, well balanced, and completely absorbing, this hard-boiled detective's confrontation with questions of faith, while racing to save the girl, (what else?), challenges every reader without detracting from the entertainment. And when Boneless Chuck grins, you really can feel the ice pierce your heart.

The good news is that this is the first book in a series. Don't be surprised if Joe Box becomes the new icon in Christian fiction.

Although I don't usually read mysteries, the favorable reviews grabbed my interest. I also had to find out what a Sock Monkey was.

I am glad that I took the time to read this one. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the character, Joe Box. As he found himself in one mess after another, his dry wit and sarcastic sense of humor had me laughing many times. Yet, there was a vulnerable side to Joe that just made him loveable.

While reading this book, I kept thinking that it would make a great movie. I highly recommend this book. It has plenty of mystery and suspense to keep you guessing, with just the right touch of humor added in.

This one is well worth the time and money.

I am a book snob. Name authors only is my rule. But through a strange series of events I found myself reading Sock Monkey Blues. This author packs a mighty wallop with a dynamite story line AND excellent writing style. There is action, intrigue, humor, and horror, all wrapped up into this one fine package.
No other bad guy I recall comes close to the horrible Boneless Chuck. I highly recommend this book.

I am the author of Sock Monkey Blues, and I'm making a rather unusual request: I am asking you NOT to buy my book. After signing the contract for SMB with PublishAmerica, I have since discovered they enjoy a less-than-savory reputation both in the media, and the publishing world in general. Their faults are too numerous to mention: a simple Google search will tell you all you need to know. The first two hits you encounter will be PublishAmerica ads. The rest will be self-explanatory. As my book has only sold seven copies this calendar year, I have repeatedly asked the company for my rights back, so that a reputable house can have a shot at it. But at PublishAmerica, haughty spite and author ridicule are their bywords, and thus my requests have fallen on deaf ears.

So again, please, don't put another nickel into PublishAmerica's coffers. Please, do not buy my book. Thank you.

I found this book to be one of the mostly poorly written sock-knitting books I have ever used. The patterns, on first glance, are quite varied and interesting. I started with the boot socks. While the pattern is technically very easy, it has one serious design flaw. Having some experience knitting socks, I thought it was odd that the pattern called for a 4" heel flap, but then it required that the knitter bind off the stitches and sew a seam. Who wants a seam on the bottom of their heel. At that point I frogged and did it my way. I think any experienced knitter can manage to decipher mistakes in the patterns, but serious design flaws like I just described are inexcusable. If I could have given this book 0 stars, I would

Although I wasn't very keen on the Babies volume of Vogue's Knitting on the Go series, I am very pleased with Socks. Having never made a sock before (albeit a fairly experienced knitter), my first effort -- a "very easy very vogue" selection from this book -- was easy and fast, with quite professional results. The instructions are clear, there are good photos and charts, detailed information about yarn to enable substitutions is provided, and a variety of patterns, sizes, styles and difficulty levels are featured. And the book is portable and sturdy.

There are historical sock books, there are folk sock books, but no sock book combines all VK packs into this little easy-to-carry-along book:Hard cover--so it doesn't get ripped up (you'll be taking it every where you go. Size--you *can* take it every where because it doesn't weigh a ton.Range of patterns: When I saw the patterns for peds, I was hooked. There are Norwegian patterned baby knee highs, hiking socks, knee socks, color work socks--one book that gives you a pattern for almost any kind of sock. Patterns are CORRECT, make sense, are accompanied by a color photo and a diagrams.A plus: all these Knitting to GO! books from VK are a great way to use up odd balls of yarn. It's more than I ever thought to ask for. Buy it! (Whenever you see it--its hard for stores to keep in stock and goes out of print because it's such a hit.

I just received this great little box of sock patterns and I already have planned a few projects using some of my special single and multi colored hand-dyed stash that I've been hoarding while waiting to find patterns worthy of using it on. There are so many great patterns in this "box" with lots of really interesting textures. I love how each pattern is on a separate folded laminated card which is great for those of us that keep sock projects stashed in our purses for on-the-go knitting.

As a college student, I found this book very helpful not only for my future career in Consumer Services, but also in my currant part time position. One thing I have gained from this book is confidence. I feel that KYSOS did a great job in covering necessary topics and explained each with great detail. The real life stories and examples helped me put things into perspective and apply them to my currant job. I now have learned that the basis of quality customer service is not how much money the company makes, or how many products we produce, but by the many other topics covered by this book. It all starts with hiring the right people. I really enjoyed this book and I will refer back to it many times in the future!

If you are in management now or will be in the future, please read and learn how you can provide great customer service to your company, employees, and your customers. Success can be within your reach, if you apply the philosophy within this book.

I have been working in the computer help desk field for almost 2 years and before that for 18 months in Marketing Communications. Reading this book and Delivering KYSOS has convicted me of many errors in attitude and performance and shows that excellent customer service does not have to be drudgery and can really be fun!

Furthermore, as a side benefit, I have begun to apply KYSOS in my personal life as well, and am really enjoying it. It has also made me aware of excellent service when I receive it, and I now feel obligated to compliment the deliverer (and sometimes the manager!) rather than simply be served and move on.

You don't have to work in a traditional Customer Service role to benefit. No matter what your work is, you have customers - your bosses, shareholders, executives, your secretaries and clerical help, your vendors, etc. And if you are out of work, your potential employers and interviewers are your customers!

Don't buy this book or any in the Knock Your Socks Off series unless you are prepared to make some basic changes in your general attitude that will make your work and your personal life more rewarding and a lot more fun!

What an incredible partnership between the collector and the photographer. These photographs are beautiful. The images capture the whimsy and personality created by anonymous hands. I have collected books of photographic images since the late 1970's and sock monkeys since the early 1990's. This is a wondrous book!
I hope they consider a new edition with more of the collection.(They also have a terrific box of note cards from images in the book)

When this book arrived, it was perfect timing. Sick at home, I couldn't have asked for a better pick-me-up when UPS arrived with my Sock Monkey book.

Although I was hoping the photos showed the monkeys in various poses vs. portraits, the portraits are all so cute that it made up for my disappointment. (I'd love to see the author shoot them in various situations.)

The text is cute, and the photography is top notch.

If you're a sock monkey fan, this is a must have for your library. Makes a great coffee table book too - especially since it looks very hip (not childish).

White Socks Only
Author: Tyrone Geter
Illustrator: Evelyn Coleman

``He started hitting me and everybody else in the park.'' Grandmother was drinking from the fountain but she had a problem, it was a white fountain and she was black. The main character is the grandmother, when she was little. People were yelling at her and she didn't know why. The story takes place in a park in Mississippi during the 1950's. If you thought segregation was bad, so does this book. This book is for ages five to ten and, grades two to six. People who also like reading about segregation should read this book. To me this book starts out good then gets harsh when the grandmother got hit by the white man, but by the end it gets good because other black people stand up for her. The theme of this book is ``it doesn't mater the way you look as long as you trust your heart.'' Evelyn Coleman makes the pictures in this book look like you are there. She used beautiful oil paints so everything blends. Take this book to the park and read it then put you in your place.

The book, in an attempt to teach children about the injustice of prejudice, actually trivializes it. A little girl wanders into the busy downtown area of a segrgated southern city apparently oblivious to the danger around her. She mistakes a "Whites Only" sign on a public fountain as a direction to wear only white socks while drinking. A white townsman is very angred by this and a confrontation ensues. What I found disturbing about the story was the amount of violence against a little African American girl at the hands of a caucasian adult male and the African American adults who come to her aid. The white man is shown to "whup" the child and all of the adults none of whom seen willing or able to defend themselves. Given that there is no mention of the role of non-violent resistance in the Civil Rights movement, the African American adults simply appear helpless or worse witless. The day is saved when a "magic" man comes along and points at the white man and begins to whisper incantations. The white man runs away for fear and the whites only sign comes down forever. At the end of the book there is an illustration of a Chicken wearing a bandana like the one the white man was wearing. What is the messege here? That African Americans were passive? That they failed to teach their children about the dangers of the segrgated south? That they fought injustice with magic? If you want to teach children about the foolishness of prejudice, I suggest "The Story of Ruby Bridges" which focuses on courage, faith and determination.

"White Socks Only" takes place in segregated Mississippi and does an excellent job of helping young children realize how foolish it is to judge others by the color of their skin. On a hot Mississippi day, a young African-American girl walks into town and stops at a drinking fountain to get a drink. She sees a "Whites Only" sign on the drinking fountain and misinterprets the meaning of the sign. She innocently thinks the sign must mean "White Socks Only", so she takes off her black, Sunday best shoes and steps up to the fountain wearing her clean white socks. Suddenly, an angry white man pushes her to the ground. Soon other African-Americans gather around the fountain. To show their support and understanding of the child's innocent mistake, one by one they also take off their shoes and step up to get a drink with red, yellow, or blue socks. She is rescued by the "Chicken Man," who has very unusual powers.

This book deals with the issue of racism in a way that young children can relate to and understand because it makes the idea of judging people by the color of their skin almost as foolish as judging people by the color of their socks. I read this book to my fifth grade class and it generated some wonderful discussions about racism, and treating others with respect and kindness regardless of who they are, where they live, the color of their skin, or what clothes they wear. I highly recommend this book.

How to Make Pompom Animals is an interactive craft kit for children age 4 and up. This set includes various sizes and colours of pompoms, eyes, stands, and glue needed to make various types of pompom creatures in easy to reseal bags. A book giving full step by step directions to make various animals is also included.

There are a number of different options for children when making these creatures. They can choose to create the animals described in the book. These creations range from extremely easy to make butterflies, birds, and turtles to more difficult racoons, penguins, and dogs. Children also have the option of being completely creative and making aliens.

We managed to make nine pompom animals following the instructions and then an alien with the leftover bits. Each creation looked absolutely adorable. The easy to use no mess glue stick assured that there was no mess either in the craft area or on the kid's hands. Though I found some of the harder animals a bit challenging, smaller hands seemed to find the task much easier.

We bought this book for our four-year-old after she had a fantastic time with the Super Scissors Book (Chicken Socks). She also enjoyed this book immensely and now has a whole zoo full of both recognizable and imaginary creatures. After doing one animal together, she was able to create her other animals with very little assistance (and no reading). My only very minor complaints were that the glue bottle was too small and stiff for her tiny hands to use so I had to get her something else that was pompom friendly (craft glue), and the book does not include all the pompoms necessary to make all the activities in the book, so that if you want to do every page (like she did) you need to buy separate supplies. I suppose the fact that she wanted to make every possible animal is a great illustration of how much she enjoyed it. Also the book is clearly set up to be "cool" for both boys and girls, unlike some of their other publications.

I bought this book for my five-year-old niece. I, of course, perused the book before I wrapped it & couldn't fight the urge to try out the rubbings. It is so much fun! There are about 8(???) different embossed designs in the form of 4 plastic pages and a coloring book that follows. There is no way a child is going to find this boring. I gave it four stars because I was expecting better quality regarding the construction of this book, but I was still impressed by its craftiness.

We have Hand Art and now Crayon Rubbings by Chickensocks. Both are excellent. One small drawback is that the coloring pages supplied are quickly used. However, you can rip out your own coloring book pages for these 7 plastic rubbing slates that come with this book. There are several different backgrounds (stars, swirlies, pebbles, etc.) and once your kids get a hang of it, they can really do an excellent job. However, if I want it to look as good as the cover of this book, I'd better do it myself. (-:

Didn't work that well

We were so excited for this book but it didn't work that well. We did rubbings using the book, patterns and crayons supplied, and could barely see the pattern come through after rubbing. The patterns work fine if you use regular white paper and crayons rubbed on their sides. But we couldn't get the pattern to come through when using the book supplied.

I don't understand the previous review about the designs not showing through the pages of the book. I've had two 4-year old boys using it for months without any difficulty. They have only used the plastic pattern sheets with the attached book, never with plain paper. They've all come out well. I would purchase this item again.

I bought this book for 2 of my nephews (age 5 and 6) and it was definitely a hit! I would recommend this for any kid (boy or girl) who likes to build things.

Fun but poor quality

My 4 1-2 yr old got these for Christmas. Today is New Years, and the gliders are already starting to break. They were lots of fun to put together, and at first they fly great. I'm disappointed that they aren't lasting very long, esp. considering you're paying $10 for 5 foam planes. The paper has already peeled off one of them, and the foam isn't very sturdy, so some of them have a few slight bends in them as the result of crash landings, making them not fly quite so well. I expected better quality from Klutz.

Fun for my little boy and hubby!

My son really enjoyed putting these together. It was a project to do with Daddy, and he really enjoyed it. They actually fly very well!

This book is not only great for Toddlers but it keeps Daddy busy too. The paper part of our gliders peels off or just comes loose so we learned how to use a glue stick to keep these airplanes together. Great project for our [..].

My three year old LOVED this book. The planes were simple enough for him to put together mostly on his own, they fly pretty darn well, and they are lasting us quite a while. (Only one of the five gets a little bent up on impact just because of it's design.) I love Chicken Socks books and this one has been our favorite yet!
