I'd buy this book for the marvelous artwork. Ms. Burgin's images manage the right balance between spooky and reassuring. And they are beautiful in themselves. The story, by Ms. Waite, is mysterious enough for a child, but not too scary for a very young one. All told, a marvelous book that doesn't talk down to its readers (or viewers) and - thank goodness - doesn't dwell on (gag) "self-esteem."

Most reviewers mention 2-3 years olds loving this book. I first came across this book when I was home schooling my first grade granddaughter. We also checked it out of the library more than once. (She now attends public school and is in the third grade.) My memory of the book was so fond I felt I had to own a copy for myself. I know she will be surprised and delighted to see it again and I look forward to reading it to my great grandchildren.

I've read this one to my two year old son so many times, he now reads it to me! ..."with scratching and scrabbling, a little mouse was struggling". He is smitten with the lure of Judy Waite's plot, the twists and tangles of the vocabulary, and Norma Burgin's luxuriously detailed illustrations. His VERY favourite book!

I definitely recommend this board book... it is simple and to the point with one shape per page. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the pull out tabs are annoying for my 19 month old since it takes a little tugging for the tabs to come out... she gets frustrated at times and ends up crying. Had I realized that this would be the case, I would have never introduced her to the tabs. In any case, I still recommend this book.

My first experience with this book occurred 6 years ago. It is not only great for babies, but for toddlers, and more durable than other similar "lift-the-flap" books. It is concept and word appropriate text for very small children. Since then, I have purchased it for numerous friends for baby showers. My own children have loved this book so much we had to go buy a 2nd copy. It is a great book to use for children between 6 - 24 months, especially great to tuck into the "church" bag or other places and activities where children need to sit quietly when they need something to capture their attention. We also have the other books in the series (which are also very well put together - Shapes, Opposites, Numbers), but this is my personal favorite.

My son likes it for the pull out tabs that reveal a drawing of an object that illustrates the shape drawn on the page. The shapes included are: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, heart and diamond. While the illustrations are as simple and straightforward as the limited vocabulary used in this book, they are still beautifully drawn. Rather that use solid colors for the shapes, each one has a subtle gradient to give it more pop. The real world objects are drawn in greater detail than the shapes so that they stand out. The illustrations included are: a tricycle, a quilt, a watermelon, a triangle instrument, a valentine and a kite.

I like that the book throws in some words that my son doesn't know straight away to give him something new to work on. He has learned "quilt" and "valentine" while reading this book to me.

Decent overall but needs more explanation for beginners

I got this knowing nothing about slide guitar and wanting to learn from the very basics on up. There are tons of examples and the included CD is great (a must). However, the book jumps right into playing without a better explanation of how to play. For example, one of the first topics is on dampening - very important. But a more detailed description of dampening is required because this is very tricky for the beginner. I found out on the internet that a plucked string needs to be dampened behind the note - dampening is not just for the notes around it. Not explained in the book. And dampening is done with both hands - but how?

I really would have liked some technique passages to work on before getting into actual licks and phrases and a description of how to get the best tone and what guitars offer what qualities (acoustic, resonator, electric, etc.) would have been appreciated. Just rented Warren's DVD from Netflix so hoping that will shed some light before I continue with the book.

This is one of the best book/cds on guitar that I own, and I have a couple. Warren teaches slide guitar in standard tuning which is great. Everyone else wants to do it in some open tuning. He starts by teaching some basics like muting and simple lick examples. The cd is high quality and the backing tracks are performed bv govm't mule rhythm on one channel lead (warren) on the other. The licks get more interesting and then lead to a 24 measure example. There are several of these examples a couple are 60 measures. He teaches playing over chord changes utilizing triads and dyads along with some scales. Then gets into advanced soloing and more involved chord changes. Some of this stuff is tricky but really fun, again the cd is really cool, there are even 5 backing tracks at the end. About 40 pages long and 50 examples this should have cost much more. great value great book\cd, a must for anyone who wants to play slide.

Learning slide guitar in standard tuning is a great way to add another dimension to your guitar playing with the benefit of not having to retune your guitar. That's not to knock open tunings, they are great too, but playing slide in standard tuning allows the player to use all of their knowledge of scales, chords etc when playing slide. A highly recommended book by a great guitar player and teacher.

This is NOT a beginner's book, but provides excellent samples and written examples of very useful slide guitar licks.

Note that this book teaches slide guitar in STANDARD tuning, not in various open tunings like other books. Practically speaking, this method can provide a non-slide guitar player with the ability to add some slide flair to a song withou having to swap guitars.

While looking to educate my adopted Chinese son ... only in this country for two years, I noticed his interest in life sciences and chemestry. So, we bought him his first Microscope for this Christmas and were trying to figure out how we can teach him the many things/uses we had forgotten in 42 years since my school days. Well ..... this book is the perfect answer. Not only does it explain the microscope, but it gives great experiments and things to build from household items as tools to carry my son further than I could. The writting will be a little dense per page for his understanding, but any good parent that will use this to help their child will be able to take that child to high knowledge and functionality in the microscope realm.

From the spectacular Batiste Madelena cover of Rudolph Valentino through dozens of creative renditions of original old-time movie posters, to the back cover depictions of Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Walter Huston and Boris Karloff, the artistry of these unsung craftsmen is dazzling. "Now Playing" is now prominently displayed on the coffee table in our living room.

Fascinating examination of the shark for young readers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-11
Eyewitness Books has an imposing series of volumes that provide accessible introductions to a wide range of subjects for the young reader. This one focuses on sharks. Like almost all works in this series, the book begins by defining the subject matter. In short, sharks belong to one class of fish, differing from many others, which have skeletons made of "gristlelike cartilage." Sharks are predators (as most of us know), but they differ greatly. About half the species are less than about 3 1/4 feet in length. I found it interesting that relatives of sharks include manta rays, skates, and sawfish.

Sharks swim differently from their more bony relatives with their style of swimming, graceful but with different mechanics from most fish. Subjects considered in this work include the senses of this group of fish. Of course, they have the senses that humans have--sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Especially interesting, though, is that a handful of other species, they can detect weak electrical signals generated by prey. Another section explores the interactions between sharks and other species, from remoras (who eat shellfish that can cause health problems for sharks) to pilot fish and various parasites.

The very final passage looks at "Save the shark." Some shark species are endangered by encroachments on their environment.

Another very successful volume in the Eyewitness Books series. Highly recommended for young readers (8-12 years old).

This is more like it.

I had just finished reviewing a book for the younger reader about Sharks Where I was disappointed to find the content patronising and everything set in large type - as though children are blind as well as stupid. Then, to my utter delight, the very next book in my pile of "reviews to be completed" was this one - and what a contrast.

This book explains almost every single aspect of the Shark. It starts out by asking various questions; Which is the biggest Shark in the world?; How many teeth does a Great White have?, and so forth. But asking these questions is easy, it is the reply which takes both skill and, above all, knowledge. In this book, the author demonstrates both those attributes as, page after page, we are treated to a complete exposé of the Shark - inside and out (literally!).

This book is a most useful tool and equally important to those who simply want their questions answered as it is for those who scuba dive and wonder about meeting these much-maligned creatures.

The graphics and images are compelling, and it's loaded with facts. I used this book to enhance a science exhibit for K-8, and all ages learned interesting things from it. For younger or less confident readers, each 2-page spread has a different topic, so it is easy to read a bit and then put it down until the next time. I thought it would be watered down for the older children, but was pleasantly surprised that it had plenty of depth for the older ones.

Jerry Ziesmer tells the kind of inside stories you usually only hear (if you're lucky) over beers after shooting's wrapped for the day. Without ever whitewashing or pulling punches, he offers a thoughtful, compassionate perspective on the trials and tribulations that led to some of the greatest films of our day. This is simply one of the best books ever written on the nuts and bolts, the passions and personalities of filmmaking, period. Thanks Jerry.

But I never knew his talents extended to such cogent, fun-to-read, full-of-insight writing until reading this wonderful book. It combines the best of both worlds--the "inside baseball" stuff that pro's with years of experience will still find new and fresh and helpful to their work AND the "Hollywood" anecdotage that any fan of great movies and moviemakers will read with a chuckle and a tear and a lot of smiles. If you really want to go "Behind the scenes"--save the trip to Universal's tour and get this book instead. You'll learn a lot, and have a great, great time!

Nice update on immunology that includes more recent findings at the molecular/cellular level. This is a more general, broad review of the field that takes you to where immunologists are focusing their efforts today. A good example is the chapter on vaccines and vaccines in development. However, if I were someone who was needing a textbook to review medical immunology for a licensing exam, this is not the book to use. This text is more appropriate for graduate students or others engaged in research who want a more detailed overview of the field.

The inclusion of all the latest abstruse developments in the field of immunology was part of a concerted effort to make this latest edition of "Roitt's Essential Immunology" standout in the crowd. It is an elaborate text whose popularity attests to its high quality.
Good enough, the traditional use of simple descriptions were retained in this new edition, while additional efforts were made in order to simplify most of the complex issues associated with immunochemistry and immunopathology. This textbook is a one-volume knowledge base whose accurate differentials are largely due to extensive facts validations.

I would be less than honest if I didn't admit that the book and its situations disturbed me, they did. This is not to say however, that I found the book anything less than wonderfully written. The book brings out a clear image of the day-to-day terror that exists in some families. Having lived in a warm and nurturing household, it was difficult for me to grasp until the end.

I give Jane Basta two hearty thumbs up for her excellent work. I will certainly be first in line for her next book.

The central theme of this book is alcoholism, rape and abuse. It's not for the light hearted but rather for those who wish to expand the limits of their world.

Ms. Basta tackled these difficult subjects head-on and with the flair of a seasoned writer bringing to life the horror faced every day by families everywhere.

I applaud her for her insight and courage and admire for the manner in which she wrote this fascinating story.

I appreciated the book for what it taught me. I enjoyed the book for how it moved through its plot. I was thrilled by the ending. The book is moving. It captures you into its theme, the characters come to life more each page. When I was done, I felt happy because somewhere in the fictional world where this story takes place, people triumph over the evil that threatens their lives and the lives of their children. Thank you Jane Basta, whoever you are for sharing such a wonderful story with the world.
