I collect Grable memorabilia which is why I bought this book. A rather depressing book of poetry - can't say I would recommend buying the book.

Very dry for fun reading but great for reports, etc. When I say dry I mean it won't be fun to read just for fun. I used it for a report on the Mashantucket Pequot tribe and although it didn't have anything in partcular on them it had things they may have done or do. I recomend it.

The Family Circus has been a staple of the funny pages for as long as I can remember, and the books are essentially collections of the cartoons, with a single one-panel cartoon appearing on each page.

For those not familiar, the Family Circus tracks the adventures of an all-American family consisting of a working dad, a stay-at-home (and very shapely!) mom, four young children and two dogs. Most of the humor comes from the interesting take children have on the world, often revolving around their misunderstandings, their innocent self-centeredness, or their insensitivity to their parents as human beings.

One nice thing about the paperback books that adds to the experience is the fact that we can better appreciate an ongoing storyline. In "I Can't Untie My Shoes!," we are treated to an extended visit from Grandma and Grandpa, and a longish sequence involving Christmas. Later one-shots mention New Year's Day and Valentine's Day, and I like that Keane took the time to give us this bit of continuity.

I find the gentle, often understated humor to be amusing, but a friend of mine says that it's the worst comic in the world. Whether or not you enjoy the Family Circus will probably have to do with whether you think the things little kids say are cute. This is an accurate portrayal of innocent toddlers in action; but if you're looking for something cutting edge, move on to something else.

It's a slim book of pithy sayings and poems. It's the 1959 version of Don't Sweat the Small Stuff.... It was probably a book that many a well meaning boss or teacher presented to employees or students.

This book is full of information on the medical practices that were used before and during the Civil War, and how the war affected the medical field. However, it is written for a younger audience, and at times is very repetitive. I recommend this book for people who want a brief overview of the practices used in the Civil War.

Martha gets her groove on
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-28
Eliza is envious of her sister's life - Martha has it all - the loving husband, the adorable children, the mortgage, the pension plan... When she dumps her musician boyfriend Greg to find a more appropriate grown up man and comes to cry on Martha's shoulder, she discovers that Martha's husband Michael has left her.

The house in shambles, and Martha in shock, Eliza moves in the help her sister make the transition to singledom. But Martha assumes this is just a phase and that Michael will be back. When the sisters venture out on the dating scene, Eliza has a hard time finding a new relationship, while Martha jumps right into one with charismatic Jack Hope.

Parks has penned an interesting story about a woman who finds herself suddenly single, but it fails to fulfill the reader. Rather than empowerment, Martha wallows in self-pity waiting for her husband to return, even while engaged in a relationship with Jack. While it is billed as a story about both sisters finding love, this is primarily Martha's story. Eliza and the male characters were basically one dimensional and their characters never fully developed. Eliza's many blind dates should've been a focal point. As it was, each was relegated to a couple paragraphs - definitely a missed opportunity. Parks has penned much better. Released in the US as "Lust for Life," probably to avoid confusion with Jennifer Weiner's "In Her Shoes."

Broad Bureaucratic Farce

Review Date: 2006-12-28
The old adage that a beginning writer should "write what you know" certainly applies to this debut comic crime novel by former immigration officer Saint. He uses his decade of experience on the front lines to paint a surely exaggerated portrait of what happens in the immigration halls of Heathrow Airport. The story follows Henry, a college-educated five-year veteran who hates both his job and pretty much everyone he works with. After an initial orientation to Terminal C and his job, things get rolling when a grim looking Chinese man lands with no visa and Henry detains him. But when a superior shows up and whisks the Chinese man away just before some Special Branch police show up with "Wanted" fliers with his photo, leaving Henry to wonder if he should report the matter.

What follows is a pretty simple tale of corruption and CYAing, as Henry desperately tries to avoid getting framed and/or killed in a scheme orchestrated by higher-ups. Although every move he makes seems to only worsen his plight, once a video camera is introduced about halfway in, you know salvation is at hand. In stories like these, the video camera is like Chekhov's gun, you just sit back and wait for it to be used. In any event, Henry's plight is of less interest than the insider's view of the immigration service. No matter where one stands on the immigration debate, there is plenty to shake your head at. From the legions of Nigerian imposters to the racist immigration officers, Saint lays out the full spectrum and even though it's broadly farcical, it's also rather depressing. Forgery, bribes, sham marriage, refugees of all stripes, rhyming slang, vicious office politics and sordid romances, it's all here. At times, the nasty colleagues all start to run together, as does some of the passenger bashing, and the plot is very thin, but it's generally entertaining enough to warrant a mild recommendation.

Sound foot advice while looking good

This is an 'easy read' and quite amuzing, with some sound advice for foot care. Recommend it to any gal (or boy) who understands the need to search out that mythical 'ideal' pair of shoes - you know...the ones that turn heads, could be put in an art gallery as a masterpiece of workmanship and that feel like you are walking on air! After 600 pairs, I still haven't found 'the one', but at least this book didn't make me feel like I was alone in the quest. A must read for all shoe lovers and looks good on the coffee table, too.

Good for a research paper
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-11
In her latest book Zeinert offers a historical account of the violence of Bleeding Kansas, the unofficial battle over slavery in the territory of Kansas during the 1850's. It begins with the actions of abolitionist John Brown and his May 24 & 25, 1856 attack on pro-slavery settlers as a form of retaliation for the pro-slavery activists raid on Lawrence, KS, which had occurred a mere three days earlier. Thereby ensuing the territorial "reign of terror" for the next two years, pitting neighbor against neighbor. The Jayhawkers (anti-slavery guerrillas) versus pro-slavery supporters. The narrative then backtracks to the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act, a bill introduced by Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas, which stated both states would be admitted to the Union as free states and settlers could decide amongst themselves if they would allow slavery. The bill along with the electioneering that occurred between the two groups tells the tale of Bleeding Kansas and eventually leads to the start of the Civil War in 1861. Unfortunately Zeinert's narrative is only useful as a resource for a research paper. By lacking a more detailed timeline and additional information on the cast of characters students who usually enjoy reading the subject matter, will doubtfully find it entertaining. Moreover, some students may not know what a Jayhawker or Free Stater is, a glossary would have been helpful when reading. Nevertheless, the oral histories highlighted throughout the text offer an insider's view of the survivor's thoughts, opinions and feelings during this period history.

How do I say this? This book is not bad, but it just makes you feel like it's a big book of retyping of the 12 fairy books and put together with bad covering arts. In other word, it makes you feel like it amateur or fan-made and not real publication. But I guess this is what you get for paying only $35.99 for this book. There were also some errors in typing. If you don't mind with no picture, go for it. If you were hoping that there are some kind of illustration, there is none.

This product was just what i was looking for for my wife's birthday. She loves fairy tales and this is exactly what she wanted. A warning, there's no index, table of contents save the page of the beginning of each book, or pictures. However, this is just what i was looking for and my wife was incredibly happy with her present. An amazing product for the fairy tale enthusiast who loves the original tales. Very Satisfied.

Unreadable rip-off. It's sad to see opportunists trying to profit off Lang's series. The publisher has no respect whatsoever for readers. Boycott this book.

Cannot recommend this volume. Caveat emptor!

The publishing of this is truly dreadful. There is no complete table of contents, no clear divisions between stories, and the cover stock is very shabby. The stories run into one another, the different "fairy books" run into each other, and everything is in a two column layout with a small font.

A basic rule of desktop publishing is to use similar graphic images throughout a piece. The cover and spine of this book look like stock clip art and a stock photo. Why a tree frog? And then clip-art of the wolf in Granny's nightclothes? Dreadful. The only good part about there being only two graphics used for the piece is that there were only two.

I do not understand why they did not use one of the original illustrations used in the Andrew Lang series of books. To be honest, I only bought this because I wanted all the stories in one volume. Now, I wish I had sprung for buying each volume individually. A previous reviewer said this. Believe it!

So, buy this book if you want all of the Andrew Lang fairy stories in one volume--but expect the cover to become ruined in the first reading, the spine to break, and your eyes to strain.
