This simple story is great for toddlers. The words bounce along in a catchy "peas-porridge-hot, peas-porridge-cold" rhythm, and the bright colors are attractive without being retina thrashers. There's no need to wait until your child can read, or even talk. She'll love this one, if you read it enthusiastically. Heartily recommended.

New Shoes, Red Shoes is currently one of my almost two year old daughter's favorite books. Although the reading level is listed at 4-8, it has been the first non board book that has been concise and colorful enough to hold my toddler's attention as I read to her. I suspect it will also be a great book for her when she begins to read herself. The concept is one that is simple and familiar, and is written in language that she can easily understand, and repeat as she begins to speak. The text is accompanied by fabulous colorful pictures which are like candy for the eyes. We read it every night!

We received this book as a gift a couple of months ago and we had no idea how entranced our daughter would be. The photos are big, bright and uncluttered. The text is simple and rhythmic. She sometimes asks us to read it to her three or more times a day. We're ready to buy a second copy, because our daughter's enthusiastic page turning has taken a toll on her copy. We highly recommend this book for children as young as 12 months old.

We really like Pinky Dinky Doo and I was very excited about these books. However, my daughter is a young reader and the structure of the books is choppy and hard to follow (The ABC quizzes confused her). It's a cute book, but not the best I've seen for reading practice.

What a clever character!

This character encourages imagination and reading! My toddler loves these stories and is eagerly awaiting its new series on the NOGGIN network.
What an honor to have it's author post on amazon.com. Keep up the great work Jim!

OK so I'm the author...No wonder I give Pinky Dinky Doo 5 stars! But I have to thank my two kids. They are the one's who said "Daddy, make up a story." They are the one's whose laughter was like throwing gas on the fire of my imagionation! After drawing the characters for such cartoon shows as Doug, PB&J Otter and Jojo's Circus I was looking for some new approach to designing characters, and it was drawing with my kids(especially my daughter) that helped me figure out the "Pinky World"! Yea Kids, I love you!!!

Great combination of illustrations/photographs!

My six year old daughter LOVES Pinky Dinky Doo. She has Where Are My Shoes? and Polka Dot Pox and can't get enough of them. We are anxiously awaiting the next story.

The artwork is wonderful...a combination of cartoon drawings and real photographs. The stories are also very imaginative and hold even my interest. :)

I have to admit, I did not like this book. While parts were ok, on the whole it failed to grab me and entirely failed to satisfy. Random memories with little semblance of order, all dramatized a bit too much.

The story line has a lot of potential, but the presentation needs a lot of work.

My Civil War history professor required us to read this for his class. I was always taught the horrific side of the Civil War and Reconstruction and I will always have that side in my memory. I never knew the real story of the few blacks that well off than their poorer counterparts. Pauli Murray should consider herself thankful for being allowed to grow up in her racially tolerant neighborhood. This should be required reading for high school and college students.

Courageous Family Autobiography

Pauli Murray was reared in an extraordinary extended family of Northern Freedmen who had come South after fighting with the Union Army & Southern aristocrats-Indians-Slaves. Her great-aunt donated the land in Chapel Hill on which sits the University which denied her admission.

This is a story of the courage of the "Yankee Schoolmarms" (including her Grandfather)who brought education to the newly freed slaves, and the courage of those who sought the education he offered. Her aunts also followed their father in lives devoted to education. One of the most moving moments in the book is when her Aunt Pauline read the Supreme Court's decision to integrate in 1954, the year before her death. "Thank G-d, I have lived to see this day," she said.

Murray's own life was more than worthy of the ambitions they instilled in her. This is the way an autobiographical family story _should_ be written: if only such writers were thick on the ground.

In Shoes for the Spirit, Tamra Nashman offers little nuggets of inspiration, perfect for our busy lives. With topics such as fear, love, and healing, Tamra brings the subjects to life through stories we've all experienced to one degree or another. Great as a bedside book, ready to grab and enjoy in a few short minutes a day. Thanks, Tamra!

WARNING! Important spiritual truths will be learned if you read this book!

Seriously, one may tend to discount the depth of spiritual insight in a book whose title lends itself to thinking that its all about what most women might consider their favorite things: shoes! But alas - such is not the case in this smart, oftentimes funny, sometimes sad but always touching book.

In her freshman project,'Shoes for the Spirit:Encouragements', Tamra opens herself up to readers and invites us to walk with her as she bares her soul and shares what she has learned about FAITH as it applies to her everyday life.

This is an easy read, as Tamra is a genius at weaving words together to make them almost melodic... while never sacrificing the integrity of what God has taught her through her life experience.

Beware of this book if you don't want to be moved by the writers heart - or motivated to 'step it up' so that we, too, can experience 'walking' with the One whose footsteps the author so clearly tries to follow. Bravo, Tamra Nashman! I'll be waiting for her next project with great anticipation.

What a GREAT Concept....especially for a "shoe-lover" like me!

Tamra Nashman has hit on something that captured my attention. The idea of using shoes as a description for what our "walk" with God is all about was nothing short of clever as well as providing a real taste of true spiritual enlightenment. Shoes for the Spirit is well written, with windows continually being opened so we can peer inside and see the heart and soul of the author. Being able to walk with her through different experiences, enables us to understand why she knows what she knows and therefore can share what she has learned along the way. The companion CD is a lovely bonus...soothing and calming in an otherwise crazy and noisy world. Anytime a person will take their own personal life stories and turn into something that will enable others to learn is a positive thing. I'm very glad that Tamra chose to do just that!

Tamra Nashman has written an honest, often humorous, sometimes poignant book guiding us to reconsider our application of Scripture in daily life. She often tells tales on herself, and shares stories of other women, who have searched for ways to live more authentic Christian lives in the 21st Century. If you are looking for a book to encourage others in living true to themselves and God in daily circumstances, this is a good book to recommend.

Gosh, I love a good cumulative tale, don't you?

Review Date: 2008-07-08
A cumulative tale is one of those fun stories that builds on itself, one element at a time - like, as other commenters noted, "The House that Jack Built".

In this case, every member of the family runs to get a girl another article of clothing to "Go with the shoes from grandpa", until eventually she asks them nicely if they can just get her a pair of jeans instead.

The only trouble I have with this book (and it's minor, really), is that it's written with Australian English in mind. Which means that to my American voice, some of the rhymes (laugh and scarf; blouse and "ribons and bows") just don't work, and it messes up the flow.

If it weren't for that quibble, I wouldn't have a problem at all. The book rocks.

A nice feel good story

When Grandpa buys Jesse a new pair of shoes other family members begin to buy other clothing items to go with them. The verse is reminicent of The House that Jack Built (Picture Puffins), it has lovely water colored illustrations, and is just a nice feel good story, suitable for preschoolers.
Ultimatey Jesse is happy about her family's kind gifts, but there is something else that she needs, but she doesn't wish to be rude.

... in the same manner as "The House That Jack Built." Great fun to read aloud. Grandpa kicks off the plot by buying Jesse a pair of shoes, which of course, need a pair of socks to go with them...and soon the whole extended family is pitching in to buy something "to go with the shoes from Grandpa." Nice, warm illustrations and the rollicking text combine to make a very pleasant reading experience. Enjoy!

I own Wheatley's Collectable Glass Shoes, second edition, a wonderful book for glass and china shoe collectors. I love the color photos and descriptions and lay-out. I bought the first edition hoping that it would contain pictures of shoes that were not kept for the second edition. After comparing the books, I find that the second edition is far better. I hope this wonderful author and collector creates a third edition. The prices listed are wildly inflated compared to what I have observed being paid on Ebay.

About 40% of the book is glass shoes. Great photos, exact descriptions, great reference for identification. I especially appreciated the section on reproductions and re-introductions. Very useful for telling the valuable old stuff from the not-so-valuable new stuff. And a fair treatment of the somewhat valuable new stuff. Prices are a little too moderate, in my experience. Too high on the common items, way too low on the rare ones. But useful guidelines, nonetheless. Caution: you will want to buy everything shown in the book.

My first book by Albert Bell Jr was "The Blood of Caesar" which is a great mystery set in the Roman Empire. I started to research his other books and ended up borrowing "Death goes Dutch" from the local library.

From the very beginning, Death Goes Dutch keeps the suspense going with Sarah not being convinced about Josh's background. She is an amateur sleuth in addition to being a psycologist and her little adventures hold the reader's interest till the last page.

In short, this is an author I am going to be watching over the years and hoping that he churns out good ones like these in future.

An interesting story about a man that is faced with proving his identity to his adoptive family. Written in first person from the point of view of a woman that is trying to help him, Death Goes Dutch is definitely an interesting story. The main character Sarah tries to help Josh prove his identity to his less than welcoming family and discovers family secrets along the way that definitely make this book a page turner. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes mysteries.

Sarah DeGraaf works for an agency that reunites adoptees with their biological parents, a cause close to her heart as she herself was adopted and knows only that her mother was Korean and that her father was an American soldier. Raised in a primarily Dutch community in Grand Rapids, she's always felt out of place, a feeling she shares with many of her fellow adoptees. When she takes the case of Joshua Adams, she finds herself becoming too emotionally invested in the young man, especially when she discovers that his mother died under suspicious circumstances. However, her wariness grows when appears that there is a healthy trust fund at stake and that Josh has a habit of being selective with the truth. When Josh's possibly biological relatives begin to attack both Josh and Sarah, the two find themselves in danger of losing their jobs, their freedom, and their lives.

While the story of a lost heir and suspicious relatives may not seem that original, the twists that Bell adds make this a very surprising and enjoyable read. Sarah herself is very likeable, and the shaky relationship she has with her policeman ex-boyfriend is handled realistically and not forced into the story. One thing I would like to have seen more of is her relationship with her Dutch family, who love her and have made her one of the lucky recipients of an adoptive family. Hopefully Bell will achieve this in future, much-anticipated, installments in this very promising series.

This is a great little book that is fun to read out loud to children. The story is simple but imaginative and the illustrations add to the story without being distracting. New readers will add this to their list of "I can read this all by myself" books. The story is about a young person who needs a new pair of shoes but feels that only blue shoes will do. Can a blue pair be found? Read it and find out.

This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Felicity Merriman, a nine-year-old girl living in the America of 1774. In this book, when Felicity's lessons in being a gentlewoman turn to dancing, she quickly finds that her big, ugly shoes are stepping all over the other girls' feet. Thinking that her shoes are the problem, Felicity bribes her little sister into lending Felicity her beautiful little shoes. But, is the problem really with the shoes?

This is another very good Felicity book, one with a nice story and a nice lesson. The story does not grab the reader, focusing as it does on such a small problem, but it is enjoyable nonetheless. And, Dan Andreasen's illustrations are excellent, and help to make this book what it is. Overall, my daughter and I both enjoyed this book, and recommend it to you.

It's very realistic, and very loving and sweet.

Jamela needs new shoes to go with her new birthday dress.

Well, shoes are expensive, so her mother sensibly nixes the pretty white ones in favor of the black ones suitable for school. Guess who's not happy about that?

Of course, nothing is too much of an obstacle for a kid with a bright idea. She'll just make her school shoes pretty! Now her mother's the unhappy one, right?

Luckily, there's a happy ending - Jamela makes more of her special shoes, sells them at a profit, gives the money to her mom to pay her back for the ruined school shoes, and gets new school shoes for her birthday (she was politely "surprised") and... the not-so-sensible white ones as a *real* surprise.

I can see this happening in my own life, too. It's very true-to-life, I can't recommend it enough.

Niki Daly and Jamela are our favourites
