This book is a must read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is fast reading and you find yourself not wanting to put it down. Its not written with a do this do that sort of method. But instead its filled with stories you can relate to or find motivating. Very well done. Kudos to Robert.
I had previously read another book with similar content or motive but found myself not finishing that book. This one is totally different. Both my husband and myself read it and i purchased an additional couple copies to give away to friends or family i thought could use it or enjoy it also.
Big thumbs up for this one!!!

Internationally known speaker and pastor Dr. Robert Schuller helps us locate and own our journey in this helpful new book. Filled with stories and illustrations that reach the reader's heart, the book is aimed at helping those who seek a "purpose-driven life" and want to bear fruit.

Schuller is extremely engaging as a speaker; here he succeeds in equal measure as an author. Chapter 10 ("Motion is not the same as Progress") is worth the price of the book, all by itself. Dr. Phil (McGraw) adds an enlightening foreword.

Well-written, well-organized, useful reading for purposeful people.

Essential Reading for IT managers

Review Date: 2008-10-09
As a 30 year professional in IT working as both a engineer and a manager, I have found this book to be the most readable and comprehensive book out there on the subject of IT Service Management. It surveys the current frameworks`out there ( ITIL, COBIT etc.) presents a more realistic real world frame work and provides useful guidance in a wide number of areas of importance to IT managers.

So well written it can be read cover to cover ( which I did) but with a useful index and sections for reference work. Most importantly you do not need to be a engineer to understand it and it is a perfect book for your senior management to really understand what it takes to run IT as a business.

I strongly recommend you get this and urge your peers and senior management to read it also.

THE ITIL/ITSM Desk Reference!

Anyone who has worked with ITIL and CobIT will recognize how difficult it can be to find reference material that is both detailed enough to show the true depth and complexity of IT governance solutions and yet stay eminently readable.

There are quite a few online resources (Charles Betz's own blog being a sterling example) and many high priced tool kits and process outlines detailed to the nth degree, but this book is the best value out there.

It could easily have been packaged as most ITIL/ITSM resources are and sold for hundreds more, but Charles Betz has been one of the most outspoken and generous contributors to the IT governance community for many years.

I've been working with various ITSM implementations for the past 7-8 years and this has quickly become the book I travel with, refer to anyone who works in IT operations, and purchase as a professional gift.

A book that respectfully bridges the IT business divide

Review Date: 2008-05-25
Whether you're on the business side and are frustrated with IT's rigidity and cost excesses. Or, you're on the IT side and are frustrated with the business' lack of understanding of the complex technical issues at hand. This book is required reading.

Charles Betz - one of the world's leading practitioners in enterprise architecture and data management - brings together in an impressively accessible volume, his knowledge and experience of; what IT is; what it can do; and why an effective IT programme is so difficult to accomplish.

Unlike other books which I've read that tend to promote "_the_ way to success", Mr. Betz instead provides us with an overview of all modern best practices, and weighs their pros and cons, as well as their motivations. In this book, you will get the skinny on: ITIL; Service Oriented Architecture; Master Data Management; Enterprise Frameforks; Metadata; Business Intelligence; Business Process Management; and other relevant topics. But don't let all these terms scare you off, if you don't understand them. Mr. Betz provides the background and motivation.

For business folk:
The days of IT being considered just another department are over. IT now permeates every aspect of business, and at every level. If you have any aspirations to change or improve your business, a certain understanding of IT is now essential. In the same way that we all need to understand the rules of the road in order to drive (and realistically get anywhere in modern society). We also need to have a basic understanding of the principles behind IT to realistically get anywhere in the modern enterprise.

For IT folk:
While technologies and standards are constantly changing, what Mr. Betz is discussing in this tome is unlikely to change for quite some time. Case-in-point: ITIL v3 has since been released. However, there is nothing in ITIL v3 that isn't already stated in this book. Put another way, Mr. Betz explains the _motivations_ behind these standards and frameworks, so that any new standards and frameworks can easily be understood, and assessed for their core value. This includes ITIL v3.

Very good review of processes that need to be put into place to run IT efficiently. The author did a good job of keeping the book simple and interesting to read. As mentioned in other reviews, this is not a detailed implementation guide for ITS.

Too late for this book...

While this is a comprehensive book on ITSM that takes an architectural approach and has received many favorable reviews, it's too late to consider its information from other than a historical perspective now that ITILv3 has been released. If you are serious about adopting ITSM based on version 3, an updated book would be more relevant and useful. If your organization is already practicing version 2 of ITIL and doesn't intend to update practices to version 3 then it's a worthwhile read.

This is a chronicle of the author's experience caring for her father as he slowly loses his mental faculties to Alzheimer's. As the book opens, her father is living at home in Wisconsin, while she is far away in California. Although her sister lives only 5 blocks away from the family home, and her brother is actually living with her father, as Avadian tells it, they were not willing to provide their father with the help she felt he needed in dealing with his daily affairs. Indeed, if this story can be said to have a moral, it is to try to make peace with your siblings before your family reaches a crisis point. The challenges that Avadian faced in caring for her father were greatly magnified by undertaking the project with no assistance from her siblings. Of course, the story is told entirely from Avadian's point of view, so it is impossible to say whether her siblings were actually as apathetic about their father's condition as she depicts them here.

Avadian includes many useful ideas for caregivers, such as taking advantage of adult daycare programs and caregivers' support groups. Perhaps one of the most useful ideas is not try to continually remind an Alzheimer's patient that loved ones are long dead when they ask for them. It may feel truthful to the caregiver, but it serves only to keep the patient in a constant state of grief. If one tells patients today that their parents are dead, that will not help them remember any better tomorrow that their parents are dead, but hearing the news will certainly make the grief fresh again. Avadian describes the great variety of onerous tasks that fall on the shoulders of caregivers of Alzheimer's patients, from taking over tax returns, to returning them to bed at 3:00 AM, from cleaning up accidents in the bathroom, to dealing with liquidating the estate of a living person. Nevertheless, as Avadian stresses, caring for a person with Alzheimer's is not all negative. There are many positive moments as well, which she urges us to focus on.

While the book has many good points, it feels in a number of places as if Avadian was grasping at straws for enough material to fill out a book. She relates certain incidents that had nothing to do with her father or the disease. While these convey some aspects of her personality and state of mind as she was dealing with her father's estate, I found them not entirely relevant for such a book. In places, the book even reads almost like public documentation that she did all she could for her father in case her siblings would ever try to contest her decisions in court. Nevertheless, overall, her story is quite remarkable, and those who are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's may find much of value in this book.

The Uncertainties of Dealing with Alzheimer's

"Where's My Shoes" is far more than one family's personal journey thru Alzheimer's or a memorial of a family member with AD. The book demonstrates the joys and awkwardness, fears and uncertainties, responsibilities and outcomes of caring for one's parent. But most of all, it offers real options and prudent solutions that will benefit anyone faced with this decision.
It cannot be denied that "Where's My Shoes" is also a love story. On the surface it tells the true story in real time, as Brenda faces reality and makes hard, yet informed decisions. But between the lines, it's about the youngest daughter taking responsibility for family affairs and the care of her beloved father.
I would strongly recommend this book to caregivers and healthcare professionals alike, as well as elder law attorneys.

Now in an expanded and updated second edition, "Where's my Shoes"?: My Father's Walk Through Alzheimer's by Brenda Avadian is more than simply another heart wrenching/heartwarming personal story of a loved one afflicted with Alzheimer, it is also a professionally informed and informative survey of all of the various facets and concerns involved with the treatment and care of Alzheimer victims and their familial support. Among the issues author Avadian touches upon are the diagnosis of this slowly debilitating disease, Alzheimer's support groups available to family members and caregivers, conservatorship, in-home and out-patient medical care, skilled nursing care, and the handling of such inevitable issues as family conflicts, as well as legal and financial considerations. Of special note is what, based upon her personal experiences in taking care of her late father with Alzheimer's, is what Brenda Avadian has to say about celebrating life all the while dealing with an Alzheimer's patient. Enhanced with a bibliography, an index, illustrative photos, invaluable caregiver tips and warning signs, "Where's my Shoes?" is especially recommended reading for anyone who finds themselves dealing with Alzheimer.

I brought this book into my junior high classroom and had it available for free-reading time. The students had me read it with them, and then would read it with partners during the reading time because it was so popular. I would recommend this for any teacher who is trying to get their students to start really enjoying reading up through the 8th grade. I was able to my students reading even more books and magazines on athletes and sports once they read this book.

Michael Jordan has made many leaps and bounds in his career. He's gone from a huge basketball player to a successful baseball player. "Salt in his Shoes" is a great book because it explains how Michael never gave up. The lesson is great and the illustrations are amazing.
In the book, Michael never gave up, and he was determined. This helped him win the game. He also believed in himself. Even though he wasn't that tall, his passion for the game meant more. Michael has also been very successful. He was on a famous basketball and baseball team.
We think this story is wonderful because it teaches a great lesson, to never give up. Also, to believe in yourself. It shows that if you keep trying, you can become anything you want. Also, the pictures are vivid and colorful.

An eery harbinger of John Paul II, this film illustrates the paradox faced by the church as it faces the twentieth, and ultimately, the twenty-first centuries. Anthony Quinn is astounding in the role of the priest who races from prisoner to Pope. The writers could not have foreseen that their film would foretell the ascension of Karol Wojtyla to the shoes of the fisherman. I wore out a recorded VHS of this movie until I found a DVD.

The pope is dead. Always a cause of a bunch of shenanigans and nastiness. They go through all the rigmarole that surrounds finding a new bloke. Amazingly enough he turns out to be a russkie, and a halfway decent guy, to boot. All in all, sounds pretty unbelievable all around.

Even if you saw the movie, you should read this book which opens up a variety of spiritual questions. You might be especially surprised, since viewing the movie is often seen as a Roman Catholic rite, that there is a strong homosexual element that is dealt with in the book which is not at all obvious in the movie. It's also a book about victoms and predators: the Pope and the dictator of the Soviet Union are comapared as opposites but also alter-egos.

It all makes for an engrosssing story for anyone regardless of religious affiliation.

Mysteries to Ponder in Your Heart

Review Date: 2007-06-30
"The Shoes of the Fisherman" is a novel first published in 1963 which centers on the election and early reign of Pope Kiril I, a Russian, recently released from prison, whose secret appointment to the College of Cardinals was revealed by his dying predecessor upon his release from prison. The novel begins with the preparations for the conclave and the mechanism of Kiril's election.

In the course of this novel, author Morris West weaves an intriguing collection of characters and themes though the book and into each others lives, all centering on Pope Kiril. The characters include a German-Jewish, American-Catholic widow trying to find meaning in her life in Rome, an American reporter, an Italian politician, the woman torn between them, a suppressed Jesuit theologian and assorted Curial officials. Summit correspondence channeled through Kiril adds a touch of diplomatic tension to the tale.

The story which each of these characters brings to the novel grasps the attention of the reader One is tempted to try to find recent Popes in the person of Kiril. Is he Paul who started the tradition of Papal travelers? Is he John Paul the Wander, another "Light from the East", whose involvement in international power politics will be studied for years? The reader is well advised to resist the temptation to see history in this novel. The ultimate story is Kiril himself, Kiril the priest-counselor, the priest-confessor, Kiril the pastor, the Vicar of the Prince of Peace, but mostly the soul searching for God's will and reaching within himself for the courage to follow it. Through the book you will wonder about the characters who flow in and out of it. At the end you will focus on Kiril as he fathoms the mysteries of God. This is what you will keep in your mind and ponder in your heart.

Archaic, Yet Elegant

Raised Protestant by former Catholics, my view of religion has been a swirl of orthodoxy and free-thinking. With no regrets, I was hooked into the fiction of Morris West. Although "The Clowns of God," "The Tower of Babel," "Proteus," and others provided thrillers rich in theological and political ideas, nothing quite captured me in the way of my first encounter with "The Shoes of the Fisherman."

West was a writer of Old World elegance and, sometimes, stiffness. His characters rarely spoke like actual people; they spoke like people trying to convey concepts that would be written down for the ages. Although somewhat archaic, there was a grace and richness to this perspective that always left me satisfied. In "The Shoes of the Fisherman," more than any other West novel, I was challenged with questions of what the true gospel of Jesus is all about, and the true purpose of ministry in a world of hurting people. When the Pope decides to disguise himself so that he may enter the lives of normal people, we see an example of the Son of God coming to earth in the form of a man to touch human lives. With characteristic beauty, using fictitious papal journal entries, West gives us glimpses into the mind of those called to serve God.

I, for one, miss the writing of Morris West and hope to one day see him on the other side. Until then, I hope his books are not lost to future generations. He has much to say that still applies to our modern world.

The stories range from witty to heart wrenching, but all are lovingly crafted by an extraordinary group of writers. It will tickle your funny bone, tear at your heartstrings, and leave you with a wonderful impression of the south.
The recipes in the back of the book are an extra bonus and believe me, the chocolate nut pound cake is winner!

This is my kind of book, good stories and great recipes! Several 'southern' writers have gathered their favorites...in both foods and stories and these stories make for a wonderful summer's read. From the dilemma of what to do with the (somewhat functional) outhouse that the man of the house just can't let go of, to the rememberences of our first time at Vacation Bible School and the original "what would Jesus do" we all struggled with at a young age, these women have tapped a vein of southern storytelling that runs sweet and deep. Some will have you laughing out loud, some will send you back in time, but all are infused with a real knowledge and love for the south. Danna Ball, Sandra Chastain, Debra Dixon, Virginia Ellis, Nancy Knight and Deborah Smith combined for the 16 stories tht will enchant any lover of southern fiction.

The stories that stuck with me are "Grandma Tells a Tale," "Fingerprints," "Cookie the One-Eyed Horse," "Grandpapa's Garden," and "Sweet Tea." They are everything that is good about Southern fiction: strong sense of place, interesting characters, tug at your heartstrings, quirky, and just plain Southern.

I refuse to believe there could actually be a woman like Alice K. anywhere. Even operating with the slightly more comfortable assumption that Alice K. is a highly exaggerated composite, it's still fairly scary. Funny book, but a frightening character.

That, however, is missing the real benefit of Alice K. and her guide to life: no matter what is wrong with you, Alice K. is worse. Read this book and you'll be able to feel mentally healthy and vaguely superior even if a judge has confined you to a state psychiatric hospital.

Example: so you're hugely agoraphobic, and you haven't seen daylight unfiltered by glass and blinds in six years. You can read this book and think: "At least I'm not routinely spending three times my yearly income on shoes. And I know what to do with leisure time."

See? Wonderful! If you have this book nearby, you won't need to tell your troubles to a mental health professional; one quick glance will convince you your hang-ups really aren't that bad. (And it'll put a smile on your face, too.)

ultimately a good read

I love the writings of Caroline Knapp. Drinking a love story is great book while A Pack of Two is her finest. This book, Alice K.'s guide is her weakest book. Which isn't a terrible criticism as her weakest book is better than most writer's best books! I found the use of initial's throughout the book annoying as h*ll. I'm not sure what the point to that was beyond annoying the reader. The first half of the book is about very trivial matters such as finding the perfect shoes, blouse etc. Luckily, the second half of the book is where Caroline begins to deliver on something well worth reading. In summary, not her best book but not all bad either.

Reminding me slightly of Bridget Jones' Diary, Alice K's Guide to Life was one of the funniest, and most fun to read, books that I've read this year. Alice K (not her real initial) is 30 something, not meeting the right men, in therapy, and completely hysterical.

Her commentaries on life - from office mates (Women with Boundary Issues, the sniffer), her money (non) management skills, love, and her ideas for new magazines, will have you laughing out loud as you read this book. I just thought of something that made me sit straight up in bed - I LOVED this book.

This book sits on a special book shelf that's reserved for my absolute favorite books.

The characters in "If The Shoe Fits" leap off the page, but the story remains real and true-to-life. Rochelle feels like one of your best girlfriends--she might even be you.

Marilynn Griffith is a master at combining humor, faith, drama, tears, and the perfect blend of drama to bring the Gospel home. She avoids being preachy, and her prose is at the same time eloquent and-in-your-face. I loved it!

This book was extremely slow, the author gave too much empty information however since I had paid my good money I persevered. I will definitely think twice before I purchase this author's books again

Rochelle gave birth at 17 to a boy she named Jericho. She was in love with his father Jordan, a high school basketball star destined to go on to the professional leagues. Right after the birth of Jericho, he excused himself to the restroom and she didn't see him again for 17 years. Rochelle spent the time making sure her son was raised right. She did not date or even look at another man. Then Jordan showed up in her life again, stirring those feelings. Her son, in spite of all her teachings, got his girlfriend pregnant and Rochelle felt like a failure. She was angry at Jericho and his girlfriend and didn't want them to get married, live together or anything else. Jordan let the young couple live with him.

Rochelle had a singles group at church that she ran with a single man, Tad. She had hidden feelings for him and although they had known each other for ten years, they'd never had a relationship but now he was beginning to make moves. Then there was Shan, the waiter at Ujaama, a club where her internet singles group met. He seemed to be younger than she but Rochelle found him very attractive. At 36, with 17 years of celibacy behind her, Rochelle was ready for a change - but which man? Jordan came on to her but he is engaged to Terri. Tad talked a good game and then there was Shan. Who would she choose? Or would she choose anybody?

Marilyn Griffith's IF THE SHOE FITS is the story of a Christian woman trying to do the right thing. In fact, she tries so hard, she's rather annoying. She not only wants to be like Jesus, she wants to be Jesus, which gets pointed out in the book. Rochelle accepts nothing but perfection from herself, her family and friends. The book gets a little preachy sometimes and is a bit unrealistic. Nobody can be that good and that willing and eager to serve everyone around her at her own expense all the time. Also, would a healthy, living, breathing female being not even think about a relationship for 17 years? Even great Christians have feelings. The characters are well developed even if sometime unreal. It was an easy read.

Ms. Griffith is an amazing wordsmith. I'd been looking forward to this book, "If the Shoe Fits", since finding out about it and after reading "Made of Honor", the first installment in the Sassy Sistahood Series. I must say that I was not disappointed at all and it was well worth the wait!

Ms. Griffith reintroduces us to the lively cast of characters from "Made of Honor". This book focuses on shoe designer and shoe boutique owner Rochelle, best friend on Dana. After years of dedicating her life to her son as a single mother and to her sisters in the online Sassy Sistahood network of prayer and support that she's nurtured, the focus is now solidly on Rochelle. Having gone through a long dry spell in the romance department, not only has the long-absent father of her son returned with a powerful interest in "what could have been" but now additional men, including those whom she has known for a long time without knowing that they have had a romantic interest in her and new acquaintances, have turned her world upside down.

The book takes interesting twists and turns as Rochelle tries to decide which, if any, of these men is the prince that God has sent her. I must say there were times I wanted more details, background and insight into the characters and the decisions they made. However, this was a satisfying and intriguing read. I'll definitely have the next Sassy Sisterhood installment on the wish list!!

Another story to make you swoon and think about what really matters...

At first I wasn't sure if I liked this story more or less than Made of Honor, which was fabulous. Then I decided it didn't really matter. Both stories are unique, though they involve some of the same characters. I enjoyed If the Shoe Fits and was impressed with how the title fit so many aspects of the story. The heroes were divine and for the longest time I wasn't sure who Rochelle would end up with, or who I wanted her to end up with. What a love triangle! At any rate, the ending was very romantic and made my heart swell to capacity. I loved the subtle messages about love, trust, and commitment, and the not-so-subtle message about saving yourself for marriage and the consequences that occur when things are rushed.

There were some really funny one-liners and numerous examples of great characterization. I think one of the things I enjoyed most was the miscommunication and the assumptions that really messed the heroine up. In the end she discovered that her love for the Lord was the most secure thing she knew, and that fearing what God had planned for her life was not God's will. His will was for her to live out her faith. Take risks. Love with no limits. Great chicklit!

This author really knows how to draw readers into the emotions of the characters. The use of humility and self-preservation (or really self-perserverance) with the woman really hit home with this reader. It is often hard to find strong, independent women characters in fiction, without sex being a apart of the equation. Molly Giles creates this character in Iron Shoes. This book sets the standard for my future fiction selections.

Middleaged Kay has spent her entire life trying to please parents who are incapable of caring about anybody but themselves. Ida and Francis are so completely selfabsorbed and destructive that they have no business being parents. Ida has competed with her daughter for every scrap of positive attention and she has managed to controll everything in Kay's life. However, although this is hinted at by Kay's female friend, it is never conceptionalized. Very little changes after Ida's death and I had to wonder what the point was. The writing is pretty good and I found it fairly humorous but was so frustrated by the sense that Kay is NEVER going to get it.

This is my first Molly Giles and, based on my experience with "Iron Shoes," not my last. Each chapter of this short, thorough novel reads like a short story. Not a moment is wasted and most are packed with insight into these sad, stuck characters. "Iron Shoes" never suffers from its subject matter and is, in Giles' words, a comedy. In every sense. I appreciated the "study guide" in the back and the author's notes were a welcome treat.

When I first started reading this book, I thought, oh, my, these people are all a mess! Some of the ridicule and constantly demeaning situations Kay, the main character, tollerates, are just over the top. However, she tugs at your heart because she is obviously a big, messy, loving woman whose big heartedness is taken for granted by all around her. She drinks too much, smokes too much, and does too much, but who wouldn't with a family like this? When she finally begins to take ahold of her life, kicks the awful husband out and stops drinking, you know that she is on the road to discovery. Nothing momentous, but something profound. The author says that this is a comedy about alcoholism and dying, but it is not. There are sharply funny moments, but this is not a funny book.

The characters in this book start out just a little too bizarre. We have a mother without legs; a husband who just seems AWFUL, a friend who fixes lamb tongues for a funeral, and a main character who seems to spend all of her time drinking and smoking and anguishing over what seem to be the many things that are wrong with her life. Fortunately, the book starts fast, and the characters get very real very quickly, and the bizarre book turns into a good account of a middle-aged woman who is a helper by nature and has always lived in the shadow of her very successful parents. By the end of the book, you can tell that she is finally coming out of those shadows and is eventually going to get it together and get on with her life on her own terms.

I love this guide! I think that Maffetone has a great way to train & have been doing heart rate training recently. The book has so much useful information about being a healthy, fit person completely--not just focusing on 'times' for races, etc. I used to train & my heart rate was so high all the time that I feel so much more fit training by my heart rate. Great information!

I don't agree with him at all about the diet that he is recommending. If you ever have read "The China Study", then you know what impact this kind of diet has on your health.
But what he writes about training is really really good. Combine this two books and your life will improve.

His take on fitness is unique. While I tend to dismiss chiropractors, his ideas make some sense. He also has clinical experience to support his ideas.

His overall diet ideas are sound. That advice will take you far. I'm not so convinced by the low-carb test, but its worth a try. My low-carb experiences have been less than pleasant. Probably give it a try again his way in the next few months.

His stress on aerobic stuff is questionable as well. Plenty of good evidence supports more build mass and speed approach. Before an injury limited my exercise, I was following his approach on the treadmill and it seemed to be working. But my "experiment" was cut short.

Finally, I am glad somebody has covered at least a bit on issues like stress reduction, breathing and footwear.
