Shoes Books

This book is so funny and well worth the out-of-print wait! Even if you insist shoes mean NOTHING to you - they're just covers for your feet - you will laugh out loud at this book, and the cartoons Mimi Pond draws are funny all by themselves! (Love the "daggers"!) Every time I read this book (and I've read it many, many times, which is why I really need a new copy!), I laugh till I cry, then I run out and buy - shoes!! Cause I NEED them! And so do you! (But get this book first!)

I picked this book up last summer as an "airplane book" for an overseas trip. I ended up reading it three times during that trip, and enjoyed it hugely. "The Shoes of Kilimanjaro" is a great story about footwear... most especially about the footwear worn by climbing porters & guides on Mt Kilimanjaro. Imagine carrying a 50 lb duffel bag on your head, up a 19,000' mountain, wearing flip-flops and old Adidas knockoffs! Also highly entertaining is "Touching the 'Roid" (you can guess what that's about!), and "In Patagonian Therapy," and "I Dreamed of African Lions."

Pick up a copy of this great book and enjoy!!

This book tells the story of nine different ballets. Some of which are very popular and well known like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Giselle. However some of the others may not be as well known. The book is beautifully illustrated and explains the stories in ways so that they can be understood on many reading levels. This book was very enjoyable and was educational to me. Even those not interested in dance will love these classic stories. Other books will tell the tale of the dance but this one takes home the cake. Because of it's ability to tell the plot in a simple manor, it is a good choice for all ages. I would reccomend this to anyone and cannot wait to see what the author comes up with next.

At last! The next stellar installment in what I hope is a continuing series for a long time to come; Violetta is at it again, hunting another serial killer w/a particularly gruesome technique, but enjoying herself erotically along the way...And as her story expands, it also gets closer to home! Readers who caught Violetta's first adventure SHOE LEATHER will be hard-pressed to figure out just how close Violetta is to the new killer, but will no doubt be riveted all the way to the end of this page-turner. Glad to see Kent still in fine form both with the thriller aspects of this story and the juicy erotic scenes, too, but where's the film version? These books would make a great HBO series a la Red Shoe Diaries. Can't wait for the next one!

I presume to suggest that you read this book after you read de Bono's Six Thinking Hats and strongly urge you to read both. He invented the word "operacy" which he defines as "the skill of action....This book has very much to do with operacy. The framework of the six action shoes is a help both in the training of action skills and also in the use of those skills at the moment of action."

In Chapter Six, de bono introduces the "six action action shoes": Navy formal shoes, Grey sneakers, Brown brogues, Orange gunboots, Pink slippers, and Purple riding boots. The shoes colors are everyday colors "that suggest the nature of the action mode they indicate. The physical nature of the shoes also suggests the nature of the action made."

What's all this about? De Bono uses the colors and styles of the six shoes as mechanisms by which to explain and then illustrate his concept of "operacy." He asserts (and I agree) that quite specific skills are needed to take effective action. The nature of each action is obviously determined by what would be most appropriate in a given situation. For example, Navy formal shoes are needed when routines and procedures are involved whereas Pink slippers are needed in a situation which requires care, compassion,, and attention to human feelings and sensitivities.

This is a thoughtful and lucid book, as one would expect from Edward de Bono. If you find it to be as thought-provoking and practical as I have, you should also check out his Lateral Thinking and De Bono's Thinking Course as well as the works of Guy Claxton, Michael Michalko, Joey Reiman, and Roger von Oech.

Sloth's shoes is a fun and zany children's story about sloth's freinds throwing him a birthday party. The story is written in rythmic form and is fun to read for small children and parents. Small children will soon have it memorized and will be qouting the book all hours of the day! This one is one you want in your collection!

This interesting sneaker book showcases some of the most popular brands and designs from the 1940's to the 1980's. The information it gives about the sneakers is almost entirely taken from the marketing advertisements by the sneaker brands, and often it shows the printed advertisements themselves which adds to the value of the book by showing how the marketing of sneakers has evolved during the period it covers.

The design of the book itself is highly unique and makes the book one you'll want to leave on a coffee table or other prominent place due to it's beautiful colors and hot-pink shoelace on the binding which contrasts well with it's bright-green cover.

Not unlike a synopsis of the many recent books on the subject, Sneakers, by Neal Heard, takes some of the best elements from its contemporaries and creates a true accessable place to start in the study sneaker culture. It's visually excellent and a must for the sneaker collector or casual "kicks" fan.
