Wonderful eye opener of mental institution treatment

I read this book many years ago and have not been able to forget it nor what this man went through. This is a true story of how Mr. Thomas was misdiagnosed and abusively treated in the mental institution. A must, must read for those involved in the care of the emotionally disturbed.

A cute story about a mother mouse trying to relax while being visited by many nursery rhyme characters. Excellent, humorous, and would be enjoyed by K through the 2nd grade. This is a story book that the teachers and parents will enjoy reading aloud.

This book can be purchased from ferrier suppliers for approx. $50.00. This price seems way too high. Must be a mistake unless it is a price for all the books in the series by this author.

A Mathematical Exploration of Tying One's Shoes
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-31
This book is a fun exploration of "shoelace mathematics". The author first classifies various lacing patterns according to various criteria, and then derives formulas and proofs answering questions like "What are the shortest laces you need to lace a shoe, and what pattern do you lace it in" and "What is the strongest lacing pattern".

The book has fairly simple prerequisites: it uses algebra, uses the combinatorial formula and series of sums, and, in the section on the strongest lacings, some calculus. Most of the math can be understood by working it out on paper, but there are some questions that might occur to the reader that a graphing calculator might be useful for. Or a program like Microsoft Math.

The best part of the book is the attitude it teaches: You do mathematics by starting with a very simple question like "What is the shortest way to lace a pair of shoes" and investigate it, then go on to other questions that occur to you, and on and on, until you're answering all kinds of related questions. It is an exploration. It also teaches how you can do this: You start by breaking off smaller problems that you can answer, using models that are simpler than what you're after, and after searching for and finding solutions to the simpler problem you can start answering related questions, and then more difficult questions. There are plenty of shoelace math questions that might occur to the reader that he could go on to investigate on his own.

The book also shows that mathematics needn't be totally dry. It entertains with photos of real shoes laced in various ways, has some Peanuts and Dilbert and other cartoons, discusses related problems (like the Traveling Salesman problem), and even some history of shoelacing.

The author also wrote a book on the mathematics of juggling, called (of course) "The Mathematics of Juggling". That is also a terrific book showing how you can investigate the mathematics of a problem - I think it is more difficult mathematics, however.

From its earliest known beginning in 1629 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, The Shoemakers traces the history of that trade in colonial times. The technique of shoe making is explained in detail, and the illustrations (by the author) are wonderful. It's almost like spending the day next to a master craftsman as an apprentice.

Leonard Everett Fischer is one of the most honored writers of literature for children, and this book is evidence of his tremendous contribution.

Highly recommended for young readers or adults interested in diverse aspects of colonial history.

Kids will get a kick out of Shoes!

Drawings on the walls of caves show that the earliest humans used some type of covering to protect their feet. Today, designers might even use a computer to dream up new styles of shoes! In ancient Egypt, sandals sometimes had drawings of enemies inside them, so they could "trample" the enemy. In ancient Greece, wealthy women could own 20 pairs of shoes or more, but Greek warriors only wore one sandal on the left foot, because it was used as a weapon. Greek or Roman actors wore a soccus, and the word "sock" comes from that.

If all this shoe history leaves you wanting more, Margery G. Michelason's book Shoes is definitely for you. The nicely illustrated book (photos and drawings) includes a chapter on fads and folklore and a fun section on recycling old shoes as a planter, birdhouse, or anything your imagination dictates!

Young readers (and adults) will thoroughly love this book.

I first read this book when I was about 8 and absolutely loved it.
Beautiful, creative drawings and one of the most imaginative plots I have ever seen in a children's book. Most modern libraries don't have a copy of this book and so most modern children have never seen or read it. Bring this book back into print!

Stories with Resonance

These eleven stories slip past the quotidian into complex emotional landscapes. Negotiating relationships between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, lovers and friends, the fiction forges a chain of crafted memories with images that function as symbols: a beauty salon stands in for home, a mother works as Minnie Mouse to please her child, red Chinese slippers embody a secret.

With keen metaphoric intuition, the writer sets forth details that reflect character and symbols her characters can react to. She writes with a poet's attention to sound, as in Crazy Charlotte, where an ostracized mother shows a child another way to see:

"My eyelids fluttered. I wanted to open them but was afraid. Would I find myself in a trance? What would I do? Finally I blinked, opened my eyes, looked around the room. Above me, rotating around the bed, was a mobile resembling the solar system. Beyond that, on the midnight blue ceiling, was a galaxy of glitter."

These stories, written with wry humor and tenderness, fresh language and captivating characters, illuminate the many ways we inhabit this world. I heartily recommend Shoes Hair Nails.
