Modern shoes for the shoe lover

Yes, I own more pairs of shoes than I can admit to. Yes, I have found myself short on rent, sacrificed for a pair of shoes.
So, of course, any book that has to do with shoes is already a winner in my book.
You can find hundreds of books on shoes, what makes this one different is that it is an introduction to the ground-breaking and stunning world of contemporary footwear. Hundreds of full page, glossy pictures, of modern shoes from designers like Benoit Meleard and his heel-less, modern-art designs to Nicholas Kirkwood and his futuristic beauties leap out of the page at you. There are fashion-spread type layouts, like the image of a Pierre Hardy suede and glace kid striped wedge in a field of balloons and then there are plain white pages of shoes, accompanied by the designers drawings, all prefaced with a description of biography of the artists.
More than just shoe-porn, New Shoes introduces you to the future, to boxy designs that look more purse than shoe, booties made from delicate folds of leather and sandals of hard plastic twisted to resemble furniture. This book is essential for any shoe lover, from the Louboutin lover to the classic Chuck gal.

Nice New Shoes is as cheerful as a bright, sunny day. First, this book rhymes. For example, the first line is "Mommy
and Daddy have very good news. It's time to buy baby her very first shoes." Also, there are many positive attitudes. One
example of this is a grocery man complimenting baby on her new shoes by saying, "What pretty new shoes!" Last, the pictures
are simple and easy for a young child to understand yet they still illustrate what is happening. I would recommend this book
for children in preschool through kindergarten. This book was one of my all-time favorites when I was young and I still enjoy
reading it today, seven years later in 6th grade.

Everyone one has heard the Old Mother Goose Rhyme of the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, well Lonnie George updated this rhyme
and made it even better! And then to have Becky Kelly illustrate his book was a match made in heaven!
Yes, the old woman is still a busy Mom, but really what mom isn't. The mother is busy, but I feel in a very lovingly fashion and not like the old mother goose mom who seemed overwhelmed, over worked and generally unhappy with ALL of her children. Becky Kelly illustrated this book beautifully using her trademark soft water color style. Her subjects are usually filled with adorable children. Not just blonde hair blue eyed children, but children that could easily be from other countries as well. That's why I think this book would be perfect for all families, but especially perfect for blended families where one child might be biological and has a sister or brother from adopted domestically, or Internationally. A family loves you for who you, regardless of matching eye or skin color!

Cathy is the modern spokesperson for america... this book is too funny. Although you enjoy her being single, you can't help
but wonder with each page whether or not she'll be with Irving, or laughing at her being persuaded into another new outfit
she doesn't need by the saleswoman. Watch her go to her parents house and listen to them wonder if she'll ever be married,
and then treating electra like their grandchild. It's Cathy at her best, being her witty and charming self. Full of tons
of humor, this book is a must have. In the end you'll find that this story is somewhat similar to your own.

Delly Porter walks to school in her bare feet and makes do with a stubby pencil and recycled envelopes as art supplies because
her family struggles to make ends meet. She even gets ridiculed at school for her disadvantaged background. Yet Delly's steadfast
optimism and her unusual artistic abilities serve her well at school, and her supportive parents do their best to nurture
Delly and her four younger siblings despite their limited means. The teacher's announcement of an upcoming fundraiser, a Shoebox
Social, provides an opportunity for Delly to ask her parents for a new pair of shoes she so desperately wants and needs.
Although her classmates' cruel and jealous actions lead them to damage the new shoes, Delly uses her artistic talents to move
past the injustice and become the big winner at the fundraiser.
The Orange Shoes takes no shortcuts in conveying to young readers the difficulty of living in poverty and the importance of dignity in meeting life's challenges. The striking illustrations and the text's powerful examples both do an excellent job in communicating the manifestations of poverty in Delly's life. The book also serves as a useful vehicle for teaching young readers about wants and needs, and about auctions as an effective means of raising money. One cannot help but cheer for Delly Porter as she faces life's hardships square in the eye with a dash of humility and grace.

I stumbled on "Our Father Abe: The Story of a Deaf Shoe Repairman" at the library looking for memoirs and passing the local
history display.
It's a gripping read! the authors, Abe's two children, have done an excellent job of storytelling, with a frank and graceful touch.
This is a book poised at the intersection of personal history and cultural history. Abe (born 1900s to Russian Jews) lost his hearing before acquiring language, then went on to experience everything Jews in the 20th c. emigrating from Europe & landing in the midwest went through, but with the challenge of deafness in tow.
This book would be of interest to the Deaf community as much as it is to the Jewish community or to memoir writers like me.
A testament to the personal desire to publish, and the good that can radiate into the world from such a desire.

This book was written in 1947 but is remarkably comprehensive and well researched. Apparently Mr Langer had access to gov't
records that would have normally been classified for many years. His work was authorized by the State Dept., the War dept.
and the former OSS. Consequently, except for the 40's writing style and vocabulary, the book has the academic chutzpah of
a book written decades after an event and after volumes of classified data have been released.
This book is a very thorough account of the international diplomacy that occurred mostly between the US and the various French groups (i.e. de Gaullists, Vichy, the French in North Africa etc.) and also between the US and the UK. It's an amazing book and I consider it a must-read for any student of WWII. If you liked "The Deadly Embrace" you'll like this.

if you understand what you are buying & carefully look at the 3 shoes pictured on the cover & still want it, then it is a
5 star purchase. i made a pair of shoes from this - cleverly, i thought, using foil-type wrapping paper backed by clear contac
adhesive. came out with a doughy, roman-soldier-sandalish, faux-espadrille, oddly suitable for chinese new year due to the
materials i chose. wearing them in public would be a dubious experience for two reasons - their native looks & the careful
protective gait one would have to adopt to preserve them. ...but knock yourself out. you know you want to. crafty people
of the world unite!

The book differentiates the concept of sympathy from related concepts like fellow-feeling, commiserisation etc. He argues how sympathy is not the same as these concepts and why sympathy is not a form of enlightened self-interest either.
Particularly interesting are his arguments against Adam Smith's theory of moral sentiments in which fear motivates sypathy and Freud's concept of guilt as source of such feelings. He also shows how Buddha's concept of universal misery blocks compassion by accepting misery matter-of-factly and expecting everyone to accept and live their misery. The book concludes that sympathy is made possible by empathy but is an irreducible feeling.
