a remarkable document - American history, early medicine, home remedies

Dr. Chase was a traveling physician who compiled this book of "recipes and information for everybody" including a wide array of information and home remedies for families. At the time it was published, individual receipes to cure a sick horse or sick child were quite expensive. Dr. Chase's book of 800 recipes for health remedies, drinks, livestock cures, etc. was a bargain and a mainstay in households across the continent.

Sections include:
Merchant and Grocer Department
Saloon Department
Medical Department
Tanner,Shoe, & Harness Maker Department
Painter Department
Blacksmith Department
Tinner Department
Gunsmith Department
Jeweler Department
Farrier Department
Cabinet-maker Department
Barber Department
Baker/Cooking Department
Domestic Department
Miscellaneous Department

The information included is wildly varied and fascinating! Dr. Chase even advocates humane treatment of animals (includes illustrations for saving injured horses), instructs young people in how they can be successful, etc. etc. etc.

Just a wonderful book of frontier/19th century wisdom! I have the 38th edition, which was published in 1866.

Enter www.dustonmyshoes.com.au in your browser to see a great interactive site, where two Aussie film makers are following in the footsteps of this great adventurer. It made me want to buy the original book. I'm so glad I did! How this man Peter Pinney survived to the ripe old age of seventy defies belief. The book "Dust on My Shoes" tells of his extraordinary journey, travelling "rough" from Greece through to Burma. Thrown in jail here, cadging visas there, working in tough seamen's bars in Beirut or entering head-hunter territory in Burma with trepidation; it's the kind of journey you're glad to read about but not experience personally. His travels also give an historical perspective to some of the conflicts still raging in the areas through which he passed. The reader warms to the friendships which he made, both with his fellow travellers and the people he met along the way. Be prepared to shake your head with admiration while thinking, "He's mad!" at the same time. A great read.

The early Queens -- all titled The Mystery are all excellent, with intricate puzzles and carefully deduced solutions. Most feature a "Challenge to the Reader". This is one of the very best (others being French Powder and Chinese Orange). Later Queens are less impressive for the most part.

This is the first in the Sharon McCone series. Sharon finds trouble around the corner in the "Antique" district. The people in this rundown neighborhood have been getting threats and lots of vandalism. Sharon is hired to find out who did it and why. Before she can someone is dead and now Sharon has to find out who before she's the next one. Great read. This is the first one in the series and its a good one!

An outstanding contribution to modern architectural studies.

The main building of the Fagus shoe factory in Germany provides a focus for Annemarie Jaeggi's Fagus, a discussion of the history of modern architecture, which reveals the factory's innovations and buildings. This follows its construction from 1911 when it was designed and built through the 1920s. While the focus is narrow, the book succeeds in documenting a particular style and architectural legacy, and will be of interest to any art library with a specific architectural focus.

An unusual blend of autobiography and adventure
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-17
This survey of the American women's expedition to Antarctica from 1992-93 is intended for teens and middle school readers but will reach into adult levels as well, providing an unusual blend of autobiography and adventure as author Bancroft and 3 others journeyed to Antarctic. Based on their journals, Four To The Pole is a fine account of their adventures and discoveries.
