This was the first Duets that I read. My favorite out of the two I have to admit was The Bride wore gym shoes. I laughed out loud. This story is so full of twists, turns, romance and humor that I couldn't put it down. I love the plot and the fact that she dispised him in the beginning, great romances have started out that way. Maddie's Millionare was also very enjoyable and humorous. Well plotted and wrote. I look forward to reading more of these authors work...:o)

I had The Brown Shoes when I was a child. Recently my mother gave me all my old books. The Brown Shoes was among them. My three year old daughter has really taken to it. It is now her favorite story. I'm glad, too. It is such a wholesome story and there are many discussions that come out of it.

Bureaucratic politics in the US Navy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-27
This book was endorsed by the late Admiral Elmo "Bud" Zumwalt, USN Chief of Naval Operations (1970-1974). He considered it "essential reading for professional naval officers." It covers the entire post-war era, and documents how the rivalry between surface warriors, aviators and submariners have undermined the biggest navy in the world. It features a very extensive bibliography, and has been endorsed by Dr. Charles Moskos, Rear Admiral James Forrest, USN (Ret), Dr. Stephen Cimbala, and David Evans, former military correspondent for The Chicago Tribune. This book was originally published by the US Naval College in 1995.

Cute Talking Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-30
My two-year-old daughter recently was given this book, and she just loves it (and so does her dad and I). She just presses the red button on the front and the book reads itself moderately quietly (some talking books are obnoxiously loud but not this one). The book says 5 phrases, "One, two, buckle my shoe. Three, four, knock at the door. Five, six, pick up sticks. Seven, eight, lay them straight. Nine, ten, a good fat hen," and then is done.

My daughter is repeating everything she hears, and can repeat most of these phrases already! It's adorable to hear her say, "Buckle my shoe."

The book's illustrations are cute, too. I recommend it.

Ms. Beller has told the true story behind the myth of the VMI New Market Corps of Cadets and that story is even better than the one that procedes it. This is a wonderful history of their participation and their accomplishments. I'd truly reccomend this to anyone with any interest in the American Civil War or teenagers making a difference.

This book has been in my son's top-five ever since he could point to a book! It's the only Caillou item he has, but he loves it and knows all the words. Very cute story, great pictures! I'm hoping to buy another Caillou book that will be equally popular.

Another Intriguing Mystery
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-24
It starts raining, so Perry Mason and Della Street enter a department store for lunch. Della notices a white-haired woman standing by a window. Perry says she is a shoplifter, and the man following her is a store detective! A younger woman joins her at a table. Perry walks over to help resolve this problem. The younger woman, Virginia Trent, pays for the goods picked up by her aunt Sarah Breel. It seems like just one of life's adventures (Chapter 1). Later Virginia Trent shows up at Perry's office to tell about a real problem. Uncle George Trent, Sarah's brother, has disappeared on a bender, and the diamonds entrusted to him on consignment have also disappeared! Austin Cullens returned for these diamonds and they discovered the loss. Ione Bedford shows up, she is the owner of these antique diamonds. Cullens says George Trent pawned the diamonds to cover his gambling losses. This is a complex case by Chapter 2.

Cullens says a gambling joint was given the jewels by George Trent. Sarah Breel has also disappeared. They learn that Sarah was hit by a car and taken to a hospital. The police found diamonds in Sarah's bag, and a gun. Austin Cullens lives right where the accident happened (Chapter 3). When Perry and Paul Drake got to visit Cullens, they find him shot dead in a darkened house! They call the police (Chapter 4). Sarah Breel is now the prime suspect in Cullens' murder. When Perry visits George Trent's office he finds red stains on a packing case. George Trent is no longer missing, but can't tell any tales. Sergeant Holcomb shows up, he is investigating George Trent. There is quite a lot of action in the first few chapters.

Sarah is well enough to ask for Perry Mason as her lawyer after suffering from a concussion that prevents her from remembering anything from around the time of the accident. Perry and Paul Drake continue their investigation into the people involved with George Trent and Austin Cullens. They find suspicious people and activities, some of which have a bearing on this case. Those diamonds may have been stolen, which places a new light on Cullens' activities and his associates. Perry explains the law about self-defense in a man's house (Chapter 13). Chapter 15 has an example where a prosecutor prepares a witness for trial testimony. The trial begins in Chapter 16. The strategy of the defense and the prosecution is explained. The ballistic expert testifies about the examination of the bullet found in each body. Perry notices a discrepancy in the testimony; could there be a problem in matching a bullet to the gun? Is there a conflict between estimated time of death and the alibi of one person? The investigators return to Cullens' house and find new evidence (Chapter 17). The jury returns a 'not guilty' verdict (Chapter 18).

Perry visits the rural hotel where Della and Virginia Trent are staying. Virginia tells what really happened, and what Aunt Sarah couldn't remember. The police are looking for Cullens' associates. There will be no further legal problems for Sarah Trent Breel of Virginia Trent. This is a very fast moving and complex story, one of Gardner's best even if the murder goes unsolved.

Comprehensive shoe guide.....But please boycott Amazon....

This is an extremely comprehensive guide to glass shoes. I love that the pictures are so clear, and the descriptions make it easy to identify important distinctions among the various shoes presented.

I'm boycotting Amazon because I just learned (after purchasing this book) that they're the only online bookseller left that is selling dog fighting and cockfighting magazines and videos. These magazines advertise the sale of fighting animals and cockfighting weapons -- sales made illegal by federal law.

I understand freedom of speech, but although I find those products "objectionable" (Amazon's word) and disgusting (my word), the issue is that the First Amendment doesn't protect companies advertising illegal contraband, and that's exactly what the magazines sold by Amazon are doing. I urge you to contact Amazon and ask them to stop selling these products. Thank you.

Step-by-Step Instructions with diagrams, illustrations & photos
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-02
From back cover:

"With the prices of women's shoes so high, here is a practical, easy-to-use, money-saving book that can show you how to custom-make beautiful shoes for yourself. The author has developed a unique method of making a comfortable, permanent last from an old pair of good-fitting shoes. From this last you can make your own up-to-date, fashionable shoes. Her method requires neither nailing nor machinery, only an ordinary sewing machine, to stitch the upper parts of the shoes, and shoe-maker's cement, to assemble the parts.

The author also describes ways of making your own lasts by casting your feet in plaster of paris, and ways to make and label your master patterns. She tells how to choose material for the shoes: fabric, leather, and suede. Then, in easy, step-by-step instructions, you are shown how to construct the entire shoe: the upper, the heel, and the sole. The next section adds the decorative touch - making insole, adding trims, bows, and buckles.

Also included are directions for making sandals, envelope bags, and evening bags."
