Sandals in the Dust by M. E. Rosson

Sandals in the Dust is unique among many books I have read. M. E. Rosson has gleaned facts from such historians as Josephus or Jerome, and used ancient writings and legends to put together details of the life and characters of each of a group of men chosen by Christ to take his gospel of love for mankind over the four corners of the then known world. This makes for a remarkable and very rare book.

Did you know, for example, that James Ben Alpheus looked so much like Jesus that Judas would have to give him a "kiss" to distinguish the two in the Garden of Gethsemene?

This is the type of research that makes this one of the most fascinating collections of "biographies" I have ever read.

Of course, we may wonder at some of it. Is every detail true? Is it an accurate portrayal of these apostles, inspired by God, or is there some fiction in it? We won't really know; nevertheless, this is a valid piece of research that seeks to show who the apostles were, what they were really like and how Christ motivated, inspired, guided and molded ordinary men who, through the action of the Holy Spirit would become the carriers of his message of salvation to a world that needed it as badly then as it does now.

Don't miss reading this one.

Mark Rosson's writing style is wonderful and the stories were just marvelous to read. Oh, how I enjoyed reading about each and every one of the apostles. My heart was stirred so to think I got a little more insight into each of these great men who followed our Lord and Saviour.

I feel everything Mark told, he tried to explain that it was legend, theory or written accounts and that made it so easy to read. After all he had twenty years of research that went into this book.

I would encourage anyone to read this very special book to help in their spiritual growth.

I'm looking forward to reading more books by this wonderful writer and theologian.

this book is going to be read to the children at my church. They will like the book but the couple of children who have read it needed it explained to them theat even though it was silly to only have one shoe there was a reason for the book. Missed the point for the kids.

Lina and Feroza, two young girls from Afghanistan living in a refugee camp in Pakistan, first meet after a frenzied crowd has jostled for used clothing that relief workers threw off the back of a truck. What could have been a misfortune, with each girl retrieving one sandal from a matching pair, turns out to be a stroke of luck as the girls take turns with the sandals and become friends. This friendship helps them to endure the hardships of their daily routines collecting water, washing clothes in the river, mourning lost family members, and caring for younger siblings while boys in the camp attend school. The sandals later take on a symbolic role when one of the girls leaves camp for a new home.

This moving book provides an effective tool for teaching about what it means to be a refugee, how children in refugee camps spend their time, and how the experiences can differ for girls and boys. Although the topic may be weighty and difficult, the tone is relatively subtle and hopeful so as to appeal to young readers. Intertwined with the touching story are valuable economics lessons about scarcity, human resources, wants, and needs. The dramatic artwork and compelling text work well together to make reading this book a memorable experience.

This was my daughter's favorite book from about the age of two until she got into Harry Potter. And it's still one of my favorites to read aloud. It's a gentle book that helps illustrate the importance of respecting and being aware of the differences of others. I'm sure your children will love this book, too.

Da Vinci Code? Margaret Montreuil's Jesus is interesting enough without shocking revelations.

Like Anita Diamant's The Red Tent, this book takes a fresh, original approach, focusing not just on Jesus' ministry and miracles, but on his drama as a human being with his own disappointments and fears, his own joys and sorrows, and his awesome destiny that he surrenders to: to suffer, be crucified,, and be reborn to save mankind from sin.

Hollywood secularists, repent: The Jewish religious leaders, channeling Jim Bakker, as well as the Reverend Fred Phelps who erected a monument against murdered Matthew Shepard (who Montreuil's loving, fiery Jesus would not have damned) in Wyoming, condemned Jesus because of their own arrogance. Oh wait, that sounds more like the Hollywood secularists trying to block Mel Gibson's "Passion." In the Jewish leaders' denial of Jesus we see grim specters of the ACLU and the liberal left banning Nativity scenes, prayer at public events, and at high school football games. Has Bill O'Reilly read Montreuil's book? Someone send him a copy as a belated Christmas gift. Then, give yourself the experience of knowing the Jesus that Montreuil evokes in her love letter.

God in Sandals is a retelling of the life of Christ with the sensory details of someone who has made pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Margaret shines new understanding on well known stories. I could smell the Sea of Galilee and feel the breeze on my face and listen at Jesus' feet. I appreciate her careful research, as she helped me look at familiar scenes from new angles. Her companion devotional book, God With Us, is my favorite, with suggestions for journaling, prayer, and meditation, based on key sections of the Gospels.

"God in Sandals" is written to go right along side the devotional (God with Us) and adds beautiful description of the people and places to the readers own thoughts. The book is written to give the reader more then just intellectual knowledge of the gospels, but to help you right into the time and place of the gospels. Through these wonderful descriptions of the people and places the reader can do more then just analyze the gospel, you can have a chance to be there through the pages of the book.

Incredibly Profound Insight into the life of Jesus!

"God in Sandals" is unlike any book ever written about Jesus. Anyone who reads this book will be able to grasp, in many levels, the experiences of this magnificent life and journey. You will meet and know Jesus with greater depth through this novel. I promise that after reading this book, you will be forever changed.

I was most fascinated by the book about children and their shoes. We all know children have a special bond
with their different shoes. The author brings to light an amusing and interesting view, on the side of the
shoes. I have bought five copies for Christmas presents. Looking forward to the rest of the series and the
tales of the children's shoes.

Very touching story line. Love the shoes! Kids enjoyed identifying shoes they have. For instance, "Oh, I have crocs, too!" And, "my tennis shoes are a different color." Illustrations are bright and cheerful. The book allowed me lots of interaction with the kids-- about the ocean, conservation, sea animals, values.

Adventures you won't forget

A review by John Stott, a reader in Vancouver, Canada:
I am an ardent reader who reads many books over the course of a year. When I saw "Around the World in Sandals" with its catchy aside, "tales of discovery and discomfort," my curiosity piqued and I happily purchased a copy.
I am fascinated by the cultures, terrain and mystique associated with interesting off-the-beaten-track areas of the world, as I'm sure many others are as well.
The book will give you a life-like insight as to what it would be like if you were to undertake the kind of adventures that the skillful authors relate in this most wonderful account of their travels. Be prepared when you enter this volume to be completely swept off your feet on a journey you'll not soon foget.
So well conceived and executed is this book that you'll smell, taste and see all the wonders that Russell and Penny experienced at every step of the way. You'll even feel the bumps of the vehicles they travelled on, and the heat and humidity - just as though you were right there along with them.
You, prospective reader! Put your feet up and let yourself be whisked away on an adventure you won't forget. I guarantee you'll wish this wonderful adventure would never end.
To Russell and Penny: Please, please sharpen your quills so you can sweep us away once again on another magical carpet of adventure and discovery.

. . .about life in a Discalced Carmelite monastery in the decades immediately preceding Vatican II.

Fr. Madden wrote his book while a monk at Holy Hill in southeastern Wisconsin, not terribly far from my home. I've visited the monastery several times. In the pages of this memoir, Fr. Madden introduces us to all aspects of monastic life, beginning with his year as a novice, several years as a student, and finally as a priest. Many topics are covered, from poverty (No Money) to chasisty (No Wife) to obedience (No Say) to haircuts ("Not many barbers become monks, so many monks have to become barbers") to diet (fish), etc.

Through it all, one gets a very human, often humorous, but truly honest glimpse of life as a monastic. The delightful "pen and ink" style illustrations throughout only add to the book's charm.

Highly recommended.

Five Stars.

"Other Sandals" is a story of a young Israeli girl living on a kibbutz. She has been brought up to hate and fear Arabs. She changes places with her city-dwelling cousin for a period of time, and during her time in the city meets an Arab girl with ambitions to become a doctor. As she learns to know an Arab girl with a heart similar to hers, her prejudices vanish and she is able to encourage her new friend to pursue her ambition.

I believe that this would be a good book to reprint due to the relevance of the subject matter in today's world.

This is a christian story of a shepard boy named Paul who always had to walk in bare feet until his father could finally get him some sandals for his feet. He loved them so much and was proud to wear them on his trip to see Jesus. There, he sees a poor, crippled boy and knows that he should give his sandals to the boy. Jesus sees that and gives the boy a special understanding about life.
