This story is simply fantastic. I have read it to my children several times and they've enjoyed it the sixth as much as the first. I have taken the opportunity using this story to talk about cultures and traditions in a fun and exciting way.

A treasure of a book!

My daughters 6 and 2 request this book so often and still I never tire of reading it. I began the search for high quality childrens books when I could barely get through one sitting of 'Strawberry Shortcake Strikes Again!' or the equivalent. This book is a joy for reader and readee;)

A childhood favorite!

It's lovely to see this book is back in print. I received a copy as a birthday gift when I was 5 years old (it was a new publication then!) and continue to treasure that same volume today. I also received a real pair of clogs from Japan about the same time, so the story took on even more meaning for me. I have an opportunity to teach a workshop in Japan in May about how our experiences are reflected in our artworks -- and this beautifully illustrated story which taught me so much about integrity, as well as Japanese culture, will be an important reference in my presentation. Simple lessons, so important to a child's character, kindly taught, DO last a lifetime! This is an important book for your child's library.

Great book for all ages

Scale exercises with attitude!

Review Date: 2008-12-05
Yes, finally "1000 Fiddle Tunes" is available again, this time with some history.

I rate only 4 stars so as to bring attention to the binding - I will have it replaced by spiral binding so that the book lies flat - cheap enough. Otherwise it is an unrelenting joy.

I use it to add to my many books of scale / arpeggio exercises for french horn - they are a breath of life in what can otherwise be dull exercises that musicians endure. The tunes are good for enhancing dexterity and also for learning transposition, especially to the key of C (french horns are pitched in F), so as to jam with mainstream instruments.

Makes a great gift for that musician in your life who has everything.

Boy, am I relieved. My old paperback of "1,000 Fiddle Tunes" had been losing pages for years. An indispensable book.

I loved this book and corresponding poster. For some truely unique and colorful socks...this is the book for you! The truely great thing about these socks is that when you do where them they really make a statement! They are easy to follow instructions and make great gifts for all those non-knitters out there. Any socknitter will love to add this to their collection! Now...start knitting!

Very creative patterns and a good exploration of the toe-to-top sock method. Also a very creative sort of book, with a companion poster that illustrates the socks. I am still not sure which one I want to knit, however. Maybe none of them--just use the designs for inspiration.

If you aren't au fait with the toe up knitting method, you'd be better off getting the Magnificent Mittens book along with this book; the explanation of toe up knitting is the same as tip-down-mitten knitting. The illustration and explanation is better in Anna's mitten book. Plus you can adapt the mitten patterns to the sock methods. All in all, this is a fun book that can expand your sock knitting horizons. Anyway, get it as these books evaporate into out-of-print land all too fast.

Whether its because of rhyme or illustration this book is hit for all children who touch it. Seems the usually insatiable appetite children have for their favorite books is well suited for this joy of childrens reading

Frogs in socialism and other...

I wonder if Sheila White Samton had a hidden agenda when she wrote 'Frogs In Clogs.' We all already know the history of oppression in this country, now told by Ms. Samton in a childrens text: frogs and pigs, overcome the imperalistic bugs--and pigs and frogs embrace one another dispite thier own great differences. In the era of 'political-correctness,' kudos to Ms. Samton--KUDOS. Moreover, I was appalled by the possible homosexual undertones portrayed through the illustrations in this book. Some of the non-verbal communication in the illustrations really did offend. However, I understand that this is open to interpetation and perceptions will vary. The violence was of course no issue; the United States uses force whenever the "Power-elite" deem it necessary. So, Ms. Samton, why should we teach the children to be passive? Overall, the text fails and the illustrations do the majority of the work in relaying this political messaged book. Ms. Samton should consider a re-do on this one. Her thinking and formulation seem rather skewed. As a childrens book it is trash. As a political cartoon, it is slightly funny at best.

violent and badly written

This book came from the children's bookclub that I subscribe to for my toddler. We eagerly sat down to read the "new book" and I became increasingly appalled with each page as I read this to my son. The violence that is advocated as a solution to the frogs and pigs' predicament is totally inappropriate; furthermore, the verse is badly written, in an obvious, albeit unsuccessful attempt to model the classic Seuss rhymes. The drawings initially were kind of interesting, but the bugs were downright scary. Since I already opened the box and am happy with the other selection sent by the bookclub, I will probably toss this one in the trash.

Too violent

The book starts out well enough. It's playful and light with nice illustrations. The last half of the book however is not suitable for children IMHO. In the last half of the book we see the characters engage in combat. Some are taken prisoner / kidnapped and held against their will. While the story has a happy ending after that, the situation is resolved by violence (though the violence here happens "off screen", the before and after illustrations leave little doubt as to what happened in between). Is using violence to solve problems really the message we want to be sending to our children?

This book is exciting every time you look at it! The word play is quite seuss-esque with the rhyming and the colorful simplistic pictures make one smile each time the frog/clog/bug/rug/pig/wig cabal is experienced! A must read for anyone that enjoys childrens books!

DISSAPPOINTING NARRATION OF HISTORICAL EVENTS
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-12
This book contains a thorough summary of historical events to date. However, it does not contain any substantial information about the different stages of the country itself, its adventures or misadventures in the hands of different rulers and also its present political situation. The book commences promising, however this promise is diluted by the incesant narration of events without any linkage to the different stages in the life of the country. Also, the lack of historical and/or comparative maps leaves the reader wondering about the increased or decreased size of the country during different periods or under different rulers. After reading the book I still have to refer to my Atlas to identify the current boundaries of Luxembourg.

Love the socks... the instructions are very vauge.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-20
I am very disappointed. I purchased this book because the socks are incredible looking. However, when I began to read through the directions, my frustration began to build up and up because I had no clue about what I was expected to do to make these socks. The directions jump around everywhere.

My first alarm was when it says on page 4, " To those who find my directions murky, I an only apologize. There are no drawings to help. I cannot draw well and bad drawings are worse than none. For any complicated manoeuvre, where you really wish you could see it, a drawing not done by master is apt to be more confusing than helpful. If you need help, I urge you to ask another knitter. It's the best way to learn and the most traditional way to teach this craft". That is a quote from the book!

So, I paid $19.00 for a 48 page book that shows you socks you want to make so badly... but you will be sitting for hours ripping and redoing until you make up your directions.

I love Anne's designs, her colors, her hats, mittens, etc. But what I don't understand is why I am expected to pay for a book, then be expected to ask another knitter to help when the book should be "the help", and I am one of the most experienced knitters I know and I can't figure some of it out!

I think having someone help with illustrations would have been helpful and expected. I love the socks, but only hope that I can some day have the hours it will take to figure out how to make them.

And there is no contact email or way to get in touch with her. I will stick to Mary Ann Beattie's, "Crazy Toes & Heels" socks, and perhaps be able to develop the charts from "Socks for Sandals and Clogs", by those methods. The charts are good by the way!

I was hoping for a book showing techniques of making shoes. What I got was a tiny book of pictures of people who make shoes. Not all of them are actually making shoes in the pictures. If you are looking for pictures of "forgotten crafts" this is a nice little book. If you are interested in how shoes are made, forget it.
