Gardening -- an act of faith in the planetReview Date: 2008-12-03
Nothing takes the sting out of winter like planning a garden. And if you have children, or have the prospect of rounding up a few on loan when spring comes, this book will warm you all the way through. Author Sharon Lovejoy (Sunflower Houses : Inspiration from the Garden - A Book for Children and Their Grown-Ups and Trowel and Error: Over 700 Tips, Remedies and Shortcuts for the Gardener) gave us a treasure trove of ideas for good "clean" fun in her 1991 classic, Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots: Gardening Together with Children (Gardening together with children).
Lovejoy gives detailed directions for a number of garden projects that kids are sure to love, from a Pizza Patch to a Sunflower House to a Flowery Maze. While her garden is in California, I think most of her planting suggestions would work in my colder zone. She weaves in snippets of poetry, folklore, mythology, and of course some basic botany and horticulture. Pure magic! What child could resist a mini-garden planted in an old boot or glove? or the scarecrow and worm box projects? or Mother Nature's Tea Party? Nature-based crafts and activities abound. Children are too often alienated from the wonders of nature -- and doesn't the future of the planet depend on their connection with its simple bounty?
Do choose your plants carefully to avoid toxic elements, and supervise in accordance with the youngsters' ages. And if you live in the Southern hemisphere, remember that when you stand in your garden at noon the shadows point south, not north. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a novice, all you need to know is here in Lovejoy's charmingly illustrated, jam-packed book. Recommended if you want to unleash your creativity and delight a child -- or yourself. I've been reacquainting myself with this old friend because it's on my Christmas list for the nieces and nephews. Five stars and highly recommended.

Boot - First Hand Account of a Rookie Cop's First Year On The JobReview Date: 2008-01-23
Dunn's book is by far the most interesting LAPD autobiography that I've read so far. He takes the reader straight inside some of the most dangerous and fascinating streets of Los Angeles.

I've also just completed the book "Gangs of Los Angeles", a candid look into the world of LA street gangs. I've done my best to retell their history and explain their culture in a way only an LA street cop with gang expertise could.

Cowboy BootsReview Date: 2007-10-12
I really appreciated the small, quirky details, such as the origin of different western icons. This book is great way for a novice to learn all about cowboy boots, as well as for boot lovers, who want some new ideas for designing their next pair of custom boots. The pictures are stellar as well, with lots of great close-ups
These boots belong on the coffee tableReview Date: 2007-09-15
As diverse as the people who wear them, the boots featured here are not easily classified. Some are classic designs while others are quite modern. Some are understated designs of exceptional craftsmanship, while others are over-the-top in colors and stitching ... but equally fine handiwork. Many of these boots (again, like the people who wear them?) have never been near ranch or range in their lives, but actual workin' cowboy boots worn by actual workin' cowboys show up as well. In all, it makes for entertaining browsing as well as informative reading.
Perhaps best of all, though, June includes a section of "Resources" that allow the reader to investigate owning some quality boots of her own. Maybe we can't all afford the exotic leathers or extremes of design, but a solidly-constructed boot from a good designer is still within reach. I can attest to the satisfaction that comes from owning a good pair of cowboy boots, and it was a joy to discover many other people who share that feeling, and the artists who make it possible, in this spirited and entertaining book.

There's also another book out there called "How To Sell Technology" by a guy called DiModico. It's ok for people with no experience in sales that want explanations of the basic sales processes, people types and all that stuff. Best wishes for your sales careers.

Good coverage on getting $ from venture capital firmsReview Date: 2007-03-04
1.Borrow $$ from friends/relatives to build a prototype
2.Beta test this on large and small firms, to build up clients
3.Build a better product/service based upon their feedbacks
4.Write a concise business plan with killer PowerPoint slides
5.Get the insider VC to arrange meetings
6.Answer intelligently on any VC concerns
7.Get the $$$, start the firm
8.Grow the firm for 3-5 years with track records
9.IPO and make Billion$$$
Sounds like a great formula! But this is 2007, VC is not the only game in town. They are Private Equity, Hedge Funds, Debt Financing, many other avenues to get $$$. Rob Ryan, are you contacting them?

I am still working on my hi-tech company but I have not been able to because they are not up to my standards. I got good ideas but I am just not feeling ready to go solict for funding just yet.
But anyway this is a great book! Rob gives a lot of good information that you would normally pay big money for a consultant to tell you the same thing!!

The only problem with this book...Review Date: 2002-07-05
Rob founded Ascend, and he tells you exactly how he did it. And even though Ascend was a pure technology play, his lessons are broad enough that they can be applied to non-technical inspirations as well.
Kudos also go here to Phaedra Hise. She has captured the voice, verve and essence of Rob Ryan and got him down cold on paper. Quite an achievement.

Go ahead and put your boots on the coffee table!Review Date: 2007-01-01
Tyler Beard asked America's finest bootmakers to send him their most spectacular boots...and they did, many remarkable pairs were made especially for this book. These new and vintage cowboy boots range from wowzie-zowie to "museum-quality." No pair could be counted as plain, or the least bit ordinary.
This book is a must for every collector. Tyler gives an unmatched, detailed history of cowboy boots and portrays the life and lore of America's top bootmakers. (A few who have since retired or passed on.) This book is one of my favorites.

The kids at Macdonald Hall raise money for a pool.Review Date: 1999-01-26
Very funny stuff-- One of the best in the seriesReview Date: 2005-03-10
Bruno and Boots find themselves trying to raise money so that MacDonald Hall can have a swimming pool, and their efforts are fueld by a sense of competition with a neighboring institution. They try everything from playing the stock market to erecting a toll booth, and the wacky cast of supporting characters (including my favorite, science nerd Eelmer Drimsdale) offers up plenty of yuks.
Some of the best material comes in the midst of a talent show that Bruno and Boots put on, with predictably entertaining (and somewhat disastrous) results.
Written very early in Korman's career (which began well before he graduated high school), this book is one of the ones upon which his reputation for humor and well-paced novels was based. As a new, fresh writer, Korman showed that he had something to say, and young readers everywhere were all ears.
It is true that his characters can be cartoonish, and the actions often stray from the realm of believability, but you just have to accept that as part of the fun.
This is a great book to cut your Korman-teeth on. You're guaranteed to find it entertaining.
My favourite Gordon Korman book!Review Date: 2000-06-28
