A great introduction to state political historyReview Date: 2008-07-04
This book is a must read for any politician, journalist, activist, observer or just plain interested party. Christensen deserves a medal for making the subject matter approachable to the layman. As an historical work, the book ranks among the most active and engaging stories in recent memory.
Perhaps a testament to the editors Christensen has had in his career, the prose is engaging and full of energy. There is hardly a weak spot in the entire book. Whether the reader is on vacation with hours on end or a casual nighttime bookworm reading a few pages a night, "The Paradox of Tarheel Politics" is sure to capture and hold their attention.

Should be required reading for every new cookReview Date: 2004-09-09
The book includes more than 150 recipes, only 14 of which are for Ramen. Chapters include recipes for drinks, sandwiches, and surprisingly sophisticated--but still simple to prepare--entrees, salads and desserts. These recipes will work as well for cooks-in-a-hurry as for culinary novices. Microwave and crock pot dishes will not only be life-savers, but may very well become the favorite dishes novice chefs feed their own kids someday.
Author Deb Puente (Elegantly Easy Creme Brulee) includes such vital basics as how long different foods can be stored, cooking terms, and lists of basic kitchen equipment and suggested items for stocking pantry and fridge. She even offers safety tips such as how to avoid food poisoning and how to check pots of boiling things without scalding the skin off your face.
This is a great book for fledglings fresh from the nest, newlyweds, and people whose children think the smoke alarm is a dinner bell.
But my darling son will have to get his own copy. I'm keeping this one!

1001+ pieces of useful informationReview Date: 2000-07-21
It contains useful formulas and well as material specifications. The collecting of the information in one volume is extremely helpful. I no longer have to search for data from multiple books.
I strongly recommend this book to engineers, designers, and specifiers. It is a concise and valuable resource.
Glover has piled tons of information into one excellent bookReview Date: 2002-10-18
Let's say you are riding in Colorado, and want to know how much to re-jet. You simply go to the chapter on air & gases (p. 13) and learn that air pressure @ 10,000 ft is approx. 70% of mean standard air pressure.
Lose your owner's manual? In Chapter 2 (p. 25) you can find a torque level to safely reinstall 12mm spark plugs in an aluminum head (18-22 ft-lbs.) Settle that tavern bet over the codes on your tire sidewalls (p. 31)
Wondering how thick the wire should be to run your new electric vest? Look in Chapter 6.
What do you suppose the weather is like in Maine in September? Will you need warm weather gear? (p. 162)
This book has everything. Wind Chill tables, Heat Index data, an entire chapter that cross-references SAE, Metric and even Whitworth hardware. Listings of those formulas you've forgotten from High School.
Several Chapters apply to the off-season mechanic or machinist. Drill sizing; counter-sinking; metal properties & hardness; welding data and taps and dies. Granted there are more complete machining books, but if you are at the store and are blanking on a spec, the Pocket Ref may save you a return trip.
Oh sure, you can get most of this information off of the internet. But out in Hooterville at O-dark-thirty, you may be able to find your answer before your alpha-geek friend has even accessed the 'net.
Author Thomas Glover has compiled tons of data onto 544 pages into this little, 5 1/4" X 3 1/4" book. Tankbag?!? Hell - this thing fits into your jacket! Available from better hardware stores, booksellers or the publisher.
Verdict:
Casual Reader--You could live without this, but why
would you want to?
Gear Head--Serious "geek-credit" earned when you deploy this little gem.
Serious Ride--Has scores of uses directly applicable to motorcycling. A no-brainer.

"There they were, without a word to say to each other."Review Date: 2005-06-11
"Big Blonde," her most famous story, describes how Mrs. Morse, a large blonde woman, finds happiness in her recent marriage and homemaking, only to find her husband becoming less interested in her as she becomes more domestic and less "exciting." Mrs. Morse's downward spiral into drink and an eventual suicide attempt parallel Parker's own life. "Too Bad" tells of the Weldons, an upscale couple who seem to have a perfect marriage, except that they can no longer find anything to say to each other, largely because the wife has become a bore. "Song of the Shirt" tells of a wealthy woman of "great heart," who volunteers to sew hospital robes for wounded soldiers but is unable to help the unemployed mother of a polio-stricken child.
"Mr. Durant" continues the emphasis on the arrogance of men, as the title character has an affair with a naïve employee who becomes pregnant and loses her desirability. "Diary of a New York Lady" details the shallow social activities, the theatre going, and the repetitive parties of a woman with too little to do. The funniest, most tongue-in-cheek story, "The Garter," tells of a character named Dorothy Parker who is stranded on the couch at a major party because her garter has broken and she can't get up without losing her stocking.
Parker adds much ironic humor to these stories of failure. She is cruelly critical of women who let men determine their destinies, mocking both their pretensions and their lack of imagination, but she also recognizes that they have little choice and few opportunities to escape their lot. Equally critical of men, she finds their interest in women selfish and often limited to the bedroom. Sardonic, ironic, and cruelly observant, Parker creates tragedies masquerading as social comedies and comedies of almost unbearable pathos. Mary Whipple
