Growing Up in Brooklyn
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-15
The author comes from a distinguished line of Brooklynites who came of age during the haunted fifties, when McCarthyism and the Korean War dominated the headlines. A smart, introspective only child of struggling middle-class Jewish parents, Fried paints a vivid picture of daily life in Flatbush during its heyday, the rites of adolescence, from the Bar Mitzvoh teacher to the discovery of girls, fishing in Sheepshed Bay, and the discovery that a distinguished medical school was not beyond the reach of a poor boy with no pedigree but a first-rate education at Brooklyn College. A memoir of uncommon modesty and grace, Fried's slender volume is compelling reading for young and old fans of true adventure stories.

This story is about four girls, friends from before birth, (their moms were pregnant together), closer than any sisters could possibly be, and about to start the summer vacation of their 16th year, separately. Lena was off to Greece to meet her grand parents for the first time. Bridget was off to Baja California to soccer camp. Carmen was off to South Carolina to visit her dad. And Tibby was starting her first job in town. The girls had one thing that was going to keep them together even as they went their separate ways...a pair of pants! Jeans, bought at a thrift store, but these weren't your ordinary jeans, they were magical, the girls thought. Oddly enough, even though the girls were four different shapes and sizes, the mystical parts fit all of them perfectly. The girls made a pact, to mail the pants from one girl to the next for the whole summer. Surely, they all thought the pants would help them have a perfect summer vacation. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. Problems with the boys, falling in love, ever forbidden love, annoying little kids, and an even more annoying step family to-be just couldn't be avoided, even with the pants.
Lena had found love in Greece, although she wasn't looking for it. Bridget found that an older boy (a coach at her camp) was irritable and stumbled into that forbidden love, but in the end she seemed to regret what she had done. Carmen was wanting a summer with just her and her dad, but when she went to visit him she found he had a whole new family, and she felt very left out. And Tibby found a minimum wage job, stocking and cashiering at a local store, where she met a little girl that was dying with leukemia, they became very close, but near the end of the summer the little girl passes away. The pants had been part of all the girls adventures during the summer, and yet bad things still happened, but good things happened to. In the end the girls realize that it was the friendship, their "sisterhood" that was the true connection that kept them together, even thought they were sometimes thousands of miles apart.

I'm 20 years old, and I bought this coloring book immediately when I saw it in the store. As an official SpongeBob addict, I had to buy it! The selling point for me, since I probably won't be breaking out the crayons anytime soon, were the stickers. There's over 20 great stickers of all of the characters (excluding Plankton)! The actual coloring book includes three stories, including "Bubble Trouble" and "Ripped Pants." Highly recommended for SpongeBob fans old and young!

"Staying on top and Keeping the Sand Out of Your Pants" is an uplifting, enthusiastic self help book that breaks the mold of this genre. The authors and artist mix humor, witty cartoons, inspirational quotes and paradoxical messages stirred briskly with the ocean metaphors of surfing. As a recovering, 12 step type beachbum myself, I found the enthusiasm and writing style to be motivational for me. The concepts of change and embracing uncertainty are woven into the text which inspire the courage to act. Living fully in the present is a message self help gurus embrace everywhere. This book brings that point abundtly and with vigor.

Why don't we write down all things we hear more often? That's what this book is about.
The most random things can be said and yet they have to be remembered like the first words that comes out of a baby's mouth.
Never lose your child's soul and never forget what your loved ones say.

One of the best books about the combat soldier in World War II. Ross Carter was in the 82nd Airborne Division from North Africa to the surrender of Germany. His story of the enlisted man's view of daily life, sometime humorous and sometimes tragic. I have read the book several times over the years and it still is never boring.
