Heroism, Heartbreak, and Haw-Haws: The Best of the Goon
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-31
_The Goon: Fancy Pants_ contains what is best about The Goon and Lonely St. and Franky and Buzzard and Merle and Dr. Alloy and, well . . . it just contains what's best about the series altogether. What is included (contrary to what is stated on the copyright page) is bits and pieces of the Dark Horse series. For fans who want every version of the origin story, you'll also have to buy _The Goon: Rough Stuff_. The Dark Horse _Fancy Pants_ adheres to the following chronological order (again, this is all Dark Horse material): the first four pages of Issue One: Issue Three; Issue Nine; Issue Four; the rest of Issue One starting with page five; and Issue Five. These stories contain what is wonderful about this series: The Goon's love for his Aunt Kizzie and the brutal tragedy that starts The Goon on the road to maturity; the Goon's befriending of Franky and Franky's becoming the tough and loyal-to-the-death little guy that we all know and love; one golden, shining moment in the history of Lonely St. and its environs; The Goon's heroic rescue of Buzzard and all the ensuing mystery that follows. It contains all the tenderness of human tragedy and bellyaching-humor and wonderful characterization and all the belief in ultimate goodness and friendship and doing the right thing that caused The Goon to rocket to stardom rather than remain in the noble but independent cellar. If you wanted extras, you got `em. The original price was $24.95. For that, you got a very nice hardcover book with a beautiful gray-silver wraparound cover; new, unpublished art-deco inserts with sketches of The Goon through the years; a three-page, never-before-published Buzzard story in which he's just as brutal as you could expect from a guy who's trying to save a beautiful gal from Cromags (even if Buzzard wants to eat her himself), and a sketchbook-cover gallery that's been included in French editions up till now. At the original publication price, this was a steal. You'll have to decide if it's worth the current $100-150 it's going for now. One thing's for sure: the wonder of the The Goon is all captured in this book, and it's only going to increase in value. Whether you get that wonder from the original comics or this edition is up to you.

Terrific (and funny) vintage mystery!

I love vintage mysteries and the humorous stories, authored by Margaret Scherf, are among the best. The wacky notions of Emily Bryce are hilarious as are the various coping methods of her long-suffering husband.
If one loves the genre epitomized by movies such as The Thin Man, you will enjoy this book and others by this author.
The Rue Morgue Press has done a great service by saving these wonderful mysteries from oblivion.

Good, practical and reminded me of what is important in life

I enjoyed this book, it was clear, easy to read and I found many great nuggets of wisdom in this book for parents like myself. It reminded me of what is important and how to get back to those important things with my kids. I like how the chapters are set up so if you are dealing with a specific thing in your family or life, you can just check out that chapter. I recommend it to most families I know today who are "flying by the seat of their pants"!

I wasn't expecting much but this is one of the best chick lit books I've ever read! Funnier than Bridget Jones! Hilariously funny from start to finish. It had me in pieces. Great heroine, characters and backdrop. Hong Kong was a unique setting, and I found the descriptions fascinating. Would make an ace movie. Loved every page. Highly recommend to anyone who likes to laugh.
