Tempting, entertaining and informativeReview Date: 2005-08-17
Guides like this can often give too little detail or too much, but in this book, the author gives the perfect amount of information about every location. Each ice cream parlor's individual style, history and unique offerings are expressed succinctly, but so well that you feel you really know the place.
The descriptions of the ice cream flavors make you want to try every one mentioned (except maybe the horseradish). You can tell the author has personally visited and sampled the wares and her descriptions make it easy for you to decide if it is a place you would enjoy.
I am planning a trip North in two weeks and I am definitely visiting several of the places mentioned. The book is well-organized and well-written. Location, hours, directions, etc. are at the top of each page. There are interesting bits of ice cream trivia interspersed.
Great choice for food and travel lovers!

"EAST COAST SCOOPS".... RULES!Review Date: 2005-07-04
It is a FIRST CLASS publication, and for those of us who try to move through life delighting in "a scoop of this and a scoop of that" it's both a treasure and a pleasure to enjoy reading (and dreaming) as well as to frequent the sites that are included.
I'll be visiting in NYC (Chelsea)in late summer, and I already fantasize about "ginger creme brule'" at Ronnybrook Farm Dairy at the Chelsea Market.

VOYA - Cynthia WinfieldReview Date: 2004-11-11
[T]his book provides an eloquent photo study of women wearing pants across the globe during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Using 150 period photographs . . . the authors document an oft-unexplored side of these women's lives. Harem pants . . . common wear outside U.S. society, are explored in the chapter "Multicultural Influences: 'Very Peculiar Garb.'" A chapter on "Working Women: 'Do me a mess o' work . . . jes like a man'" includes painters, carpenters, ranchers, fisherwomen, miners, lumberjacks, factory workers. . . . [C]hapters cover cyclists, actresses, cowgirls, and other adventurous women. High quality . . . photographs illustrate every page spread of the text. . . . Chapters on romantic women and college women reveal Victorian expectations allowed for passionate female relationships as different from today's. . . . From the reform costume of the late-nineteenth century through working women and mock weddings, this book explores the lot. This fascinating compilation should be useful for period studies and in history classrooms. It is recommended for library collections reaching secondary students and the general public. . . . (Hard to imagine it being any better written. . . .) . . . Ages 11-18.
Clothes oft proclaim the man/woman??Review Date: 2003-04-26
A real eye-openerReview Date: 2003-05-02
Intellectually, we all know that people have worn all sorts of clothing at all times in history. But in fact almost every image of women before the 1930s and '40s portrays women in skirts. It's as if women were shaped like bells until then.
You won't realize how deeply ingrained this assumption can be until you look at this collection. It's a real eye-opener.
Many of the pictures are matter-of-fact recordings of women in unusual situations for that time, like women doing tough jobs that demanded trousers. Others show women who would never wish to be caught dead wearing pants in public. Yet there they are, playacting with their sorority sisters, some shamefaced, others defiant, but all are bravely facing the camera.
The collection contains broad range of photographic technologies and a mix of amateur and professional work. This mixture lends an interesting touch of realism to the collection. In a way, this collection suggests a novel way of studying the past: collect the photographs and see what they really show.

This is a FUNNY book!Review Date: 2000-11-28
I was expecting something more political. Michael Graham is a radio talk show host down here in the Carolinas, and he talks alot about current events. But the book is all over the place. About every other piece (it's a collection of humor columns) is related to something in the news: Clinton, Elian, Gingrich, Hillary. But the rest jump from bad movies to being a dad to how Michael dresses when he's a guest on TV shows. That was very funny, by the way.
I have already bought another copy, for my dad, for Christmas. He listens to Rush Limbaugh, and I'm sure he'll like the comedy in the book, even though he won't agree with all of it.
And he will definitely like the Clinton bashing in this book. It isn't the same old stuff. There isn't any whining in this book. When he jumps on Clinton, it sticks! There are several pieces that made me want to show them to my liberal friends and say "See! That's what I've been trying to tell you!"
Oh, and there's one line in the very first piece that sums up Al Gore to a T. You've got to read it for yourself.
Great book, easy to read, and laugh out loud funny.

Liberal Media BewareReview Date: 2000-12-19
Graham also has touches of family humor. His stories of his children are delightful.
In conclusion, Clinton is a must read for conservatives and liberal alike. I wish more people in the United States saw life through Michael Grahams eyes.

What a lot of lovely pants there are...Review Date: 2006-11-13
Re: previous review... does it really say "little baby diaper pants"? or is it "nappy pants"? Diaper is a U.S. term, whereas nappy is U.K. and Australia (if I'm not mistaken). Maybe two versions of the book have been made for these seperate audiences. But I wouldn't think so.
We always enjoy reading this. Our boy now gives us a big smile whenever we say "pants" during his nappy change.
Thoroughly recommended for child & parent alike.

I read and thoroughly enjoyed Chris Crouch's first book "The Contented Achiever" and made it a point to read "Simple Works." I have found Simple Works to be a great gift book because its the perfect size, an easy book to read with a message that will make a very positive difference to someone. I gave several copies as gifts to friends around Christmas.
I strongly recommend Simple Works. Hope you enjoy it!
