Passing around the "Piecebook"

I received this book for my birthday recently and I could not be more stoked about what's inside. First of all the intro is written very well by giving the reader just a brief history about graffiti writers from back in the day and how a book like this was cherished among the boroughs.

I have some of my own "piecebooks", if you will, and leafing thru this colorful exploration brought back the nostalgia of hangin' out with friends, listening to some good music, and passing around each others' piecebook to get down!!!

I am truly amazed by the quality of this book and how "realistic" the sketches appear as different mediums were used: ballpoint pen, Design markers, Sharpies®, graphite, etc...

The publishing company did a phenomenal job "piecing" this together!!

If you love "pieces" and have a passion for graffiti, then this book should be in your collection.

Much Respect!

i myself grew up a graffiti writer and are quite familiar to all those who contributed art work to this book. it was well done the prologue written by sacha jenkins(another graffiti writer) was well spoken an hit home as we who grew up in the early days of this era of graffiti sub culture can relate to. the art was reproduced with colorful visages that brought it all to life again as if it was done a few hours before i bought the book. each page was a look back to yesteryear, reading the messages that were a staple of the times ''fresh, def, and many other phrases we used then bring memories of an earlier time when it was fun to do the graffiti and create styles of your imagining.special thanks to chino villorente (another graffiti writer) who took the time an the love to put this together!! i truly enjoyed this book tremendously and glad i bought it, any graffiti writer should have this book on the shelf next to all the other homage books of the street life growing up.

Excellently executed, this is the ultimate blackbook for all REAL graf heads!

Piecebook: The Secret Drawings of Graffiti Writers has successfully compiled a who's who of writer's writers in a format that looks so legit, you'd swear you could feel the grooves in the pages left by pencils and pens... as authentic and realistic as possible, there are even a few blank sheets to get up yourself! I even tried to peel the sticker off the inside cover!

All About Particles

The most useful book on particles I have ever seen.

As the jacket says: "Particles can be difficult. Particles can be tiresome. But there is no denying it: they must be learned to speak decent Japanese." This book takes the pain out of particles and makes them interesting again.

Recommanded for self-learner

A very handy reference on Japanese particles for self-learners (basic Japanese kana's and kanji's assumed, although romanizations are also given). Instead of perplexing users with a lot of technical details like other dictionaries did, this pocket size reference gives clear directions on how and when particles are used. An extreme amount of examples are given.

A valuable reference

This book is an excellent reference for the student of Japanese, and especially for those who do any kind of Japanese-to-English translation. Particles are the most difficult aspect of Japanese to understand, and arguably one of the most important. This book sets itself the task of taking common particles in modern Japanese and explaining to the reader what they do in a sentence, with examples and elementary as well as advanced usages. It accomplishes this task, in my opinion, very well. It's one of the books I keep by my side as I do translation work; All About Particles is more helpful to me than my dictionaries in cases where a particle is confusing me (rightfully so; one can't expect a dictionary to fully explain all particles in such limited space).

How to Tell the Difference between Japanese Particles: Comparisons and Exercises

This book is absolutely fantastic and critical for students of Japanese--from beginners, who are just learning about particles, to advanced students, who should brush up on particles and learn as much as they can about them. This book can't even compare with dictionary definitions--it goes much further beyond that! Instead of giving flat out definitions and making groups of particles all sound the same, it gives examples and restrictions of when and how to use the particles.

There are also quizzes at the end of each section and a main test at the end of the book. These are very useful, and it gives you more motivation to take notes in the book.

The author groups the particles into sections--the first one dealing with particles about time. This is very smart, considering that some particles--if spaced out throughout the book too far--could become confusing with one another. Although, please note, that some particles found in much later chapters are much more common than some found in the first chapter.

Kudos to Naoko Chino. Kudos.

"I sat at the chair." "I went on school today." That is probably what most of us sound like when we start really speaking Japanese, merrily swapping around all those cute little "ni"s, "wa"s, "de"s and "ga"s. It gets even worse at an upper level when the mysterious "hodo"s and "kana"s start rearing their ugly heads. Particles are one of the most confusing aspects of Japanese, and one of the biggest road blocks to conversational fluency.

Every student of Japanese could use "How to Tell the Difference Between Japanese Particles." It is a practical, concise little book that contains a wealth of information. Unlike Naoko Chino's previous particle book, "All About Particles," this volume contains practice exercises and demonstrations of the most common mistakes of Japanese particles. It is more of a workbook, that should be followed from start to finish.

Chino takes several similar but confusing particles, such as "particles indicating time" or "particles used for comparison," then highlights the different usages of each particle, along with demonstration sentences in both English, kana and romaji. Like all good Japanese books, the emphasis is on the kana, with the romaji and English doing support work. After each chapter, there are several quizzes to test your new knowledge. The book closes with an overall test on the entire book.

The comparative nature of this book, along with the repeated quizzes, make "How to Tell the Difference Between Japanese Particles" one of the most useful Japanese study guides that I own. It serves a niche purpose, but a very useful and necessary one.

This book does a superb job teaching the difference between closely related particles, allowing students to grasp subtle distinctions in meaning and usage.
Chino has written an excellent book - the text is very clear and concise, well organized, and illustrates each point with great examples. Students can study the particles by reading through the book and then reinforcing what they've learned by taking the quizzes at the end of each chapter. Afterwards you can continue to use the book as a handy reference guide.
The book probably isn't suitable for beginner level, as the example sentences are too difficult and many of these particles are beyond the scope of beginners. But intermediate and advanced students will definitely benefit. In the blurb, the author promises to quickly give students a knowledge of the particles that would normally take years speaking Japanese to acquire, and this is no exaggeration.
I strongly recommend this book as a great way to quickly pump up your Japanese grammar.

Let me just start off by saying this book is OFF THE HOOK! This book is up there with Subway Art, Dondi White and Freight Train Graffiti. This is a book written by real artist that influenced the graff game at a whole other level. I was lucky enough in my youth to have met Todd "Reas" James and he was one of the coolest writers I ever met. He gave me outlines and would just kick it with me even though I was new to the scene. His style is still seen today in so many writers doing their thing today. The interviews in this book are amazing! The photos are clear and I like how they show the writers at that time and what influenced them. For anyone a fan of graffiti or any new writers looking to get schooled this is a must have.

A smorgasbord of insights on Cuba today
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-19
Full of unexpected and detailed stories about Cuba in the world today...Yugoslavia could have withstood NATO bombings in the 1990s if army officers had used underground tunnels and the system of reserves put in place during World War II to allow the population to sustain itself, one of the Chinese-Cuban generals interviewed in this book says. He explains that Cuba's defense relies on such a system of reserves (not only food but also pencils and paper to keep schools open!): to give the rest of the world time to come to Cuba's aid and organize solidarity in the event of a military attack. So he spearheaded a wildly successful program in Cuba to develop urban agriculture and increase domestic food production. A part of this effort: convincing Cubans to eat veggies...the generals went to Angola to help fight the South African invasion in the 80s, one lost a leg there; one went to Venezuela on the recommendation of the UN to help them develop a food production program like the Cubans'...they all talk about what it was like growing up Chinese under the Batista dictatorship...Who would have guessed that the number of Chinese who moved to Cuba in the mid1800s was roughly the same as the number who moved to the US? An easy read, and you just never know what the next chapter will talk about. (By the way, I have discovered that regardless of the information on availability from Amazon posted with this title, it can always be obtained from the Pathfinder Z store listed at the top of the page under "new and used".)

I bought this book sight unseen and with some trepidation as it's not cheap. The first picture I looked at showed a B-18 misidentified as a DC-2 and my stomach sank. However, the more I browsed the better it got and by the time I'd examined every page I was satisfied that I'd made a very good purchase.

The book starts in the WWII era and contains the superb images of immediate post-war storage at Chino shot by WT Larkins and Emil Strasser. Each of the various warbird restoration organisations on the field is allocated its own section and many fascinating shots, almost all in sunny conditions and in colour, are from the 1960s and '70s. A wide range of types and colour schemes is illustated and there is an attempt at listing as many airframes as possible that have passed through each restorer's workshop.

Yes, there are some glaring typos - it looks as though the book wasn't proof read - but these are more than compensated for by the glorious photography and high quality reproduction. For some reason the pages aren't numbered but the book is printed on heavy gloss paper and beautifully finished.

Put simply, if you're interested in warbirds generally or in Chino in particular you really can't afford NOT to have this book.

Bueno libro y facil de leer

Review Date: 2008-09-01

This book is one of my favourites. Lin Yutang retells some of the most famous Chinese short stories, ranging from the Tang, to the Sung and Ching periods. There are stories of adventure and mystery, about love, ghost stories etc. Some titles: Curly-Beard (about the Chinese "Charlemagne", uniting China under the great Tang empire), the Stranger's Note, the Jade Goddess, Madame D. When reading these fascinating stories you feel immersed in an exotic atmosphere, and are impressed by the culture of this ancient civilisation that radiates from the text.
A short example from the interesting introduction: "The Tang period was not only the golden period of poetry; it was also the classical period of the literary tale. Men's imaginations were bolder, as in Elizabethan England, their fancy was a little freer and livelier, and their hearts were a little lighter..."

This is a well written, and beautifully photographed cookbook on healthy gourmet cooking

I love that the book gives the nutritional breakdown on each recipe. So whether you are counting calories, total fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, protein, cholesterol or sodium, this book gives all the numbers you could want to track.

I like the table that the author included in the front of the book that indicate which herbs and spices pare best with particular foods. I also appreciate the table that shows the herbs and spices that are used by regional cuisine. So if you don't know how to flavor North African food for example, the book tells you to use mint, garlic, sesame seeds, lemon zest or onion.

Most, of the recipes have full color photos in the book. For each recipe the authors tell you which country the recipe is from. This information is handy for planning an international dinner.

Specific recipes that I enjoyed were the Syrian Whole Wheat Pita Bread and the Braid of Salmon and Sea Bass with Red Pepper and Sorrel Sauces. There are also nice Lavash and Whole-Wheat Chapti recipes included that I would recommend.

This book is a large coffee table sized book. The paper is a heavy weight glossy stock. The cover of this book is made from a heavy weight backing.

If you were looking for a healthy gourmet cookbook with an international flair I would recommend this book.
