I really loved this book. It is exciting, informative and easy reading. I only met Mr. Ford briefly at a book signing, but the tenor of the book feels like Mr. Ford, himself: charming, knowledgeable, sophisticated and fun. Lots of information regarding marina life, boating, boats and the the whole marina thing. I like the way he structured the book and his characters jump off the page. Each is exclusively expressive and well-defined.

I just finished your recent book Precious Cargo. I greatly enjoyed your writing, character development, and story line. It is a sad statement on the condition of illegal immigrants and what they face trying to make a better life for themselves and their family's. I really liked Charlie Nobel, Nobel Lady and Raven, not to forget Kate. I hope this is the beginning of a continuing series.

Please continue to write as you have a great gift. Your writing allows me escape and think about the human condition. Isn't that what it is all about?

I've been a sailor along the beautiful New England coast for over 50 years. Clyde Ford has now opened my senses to the exciting sailing areas of the Northwest with his thrilling and descriptive Charlie Noble adventures. The fact that Clyde wove a Nonsuch sailboat (my favorite) into the the story just added to my enjoyment.

Precious Cargo is fantastic reading!! This novel is filled with adventure, many interesting characters - especially Charlie Noble who I quickly fell in love with - and a story which will astound you. So vividly written, I felt I was right there in the midst of everything. Charlie Noble's quest to search for truth is inspiring. This is my first Clyde Ford novel and I am "HOOKED"! Clyde Ford is a brilliant author.

This book is an excellent text to all airport related personnels. I found it's particularly useful to people working in airport and/or aviation management who want to gain more in-depth understanding to all areas of airport operations. This book can also serve as in-house classroom training text for airline personnel. A highly recommended one!

This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato

A valuable book for any transport researcher

This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.

Two hundred thousand children were placed through the
train project. What a monumental impact on American history that is! It is astounding that this knowledge is not part of the commonly known events that shaped our nation. I hope the first person reports of Rev. Clarke found in this compilation will correct some of that void in history.

This is an extremely resourceful book for anyone who wants to learn about or better understand the Orphan Train era of American history. Reading the journals and seeing the photos from Rev. Clarke who was a placing agent during this time, will give the reader great insight into how this movement came to be and why it was sustained for so many years. As the granddaughter of an orphan train rider, I was pleased to read of Rev. Clarke's genuine concern for the children he placed and the value he put on each little life.

Clark Kidder documents Rev. Clarke's regions of operation--Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri. The journals and notes of Rev. Clarke show his great caring and concern for these orphan children. In some cases, there are personal notes from the children he placed.
Ever wonder why so many children went to Hopkinton, Ia. when the area could not support them? Rev. Clarke's journals and notes reveal information on at least 80 of these mystery children. There are over 400 children listed in these pages.

These pages document the placement history of these children. They reveal how many times, the same children would have to be moved before a suitable home could be found for them, and why the same children appear on more than one state's lists. It documents how sometimes children would be picked up locally and transported further down the line. Kidder points out how sometimes the children would wander away from the trains to disappear forever.
No orphan train research is complete without reading this facinating book.

An Exceptional Book!

I found Mr. Kidder's book to be fascinating. The photos of the dozens of little orphans are so endearing, and the stories of their trials and triumphs are immensely entertaining. Rev. H. D. Clarke was truly a remarkable individual. You'll find this book impossible to put down after you begin reading it. The balance of the book is told in Rev. Clarke's own words, and those of the orphans, which gives one an intimate and historical look at a most remarkable chapter in America's history.

My wife suggested I read this book. I am glad I did. So much goes into understanding how our country is protected and needs to be protected.

The author is very knowledgeable as he was a former maritime investigator and a prior maritime intelligence officer. I trust what he says in his book.

This book helped me understand exactly what we are up against when it comes to criminals and terrorists.

I highly recommend this book to people so they can understand what is all involved in protecting our country.

"Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System Are We on a Collision Course?" by Anthony M. Davis USCG, Ret. is an interesting book on the challenges our law enforcement and other agencies have to keep the USA safe.

The book describes the agonizing steps the officers have to go through to determine if the incident in question is a crime or a terrorist act.

The book will educate you on the new laws passed due to terrorism.

Anthony M. Davis does a wonderful job explaining why the Middle East does not get along with the Jewish people. The fact may surprise you that it is not about religion.

The book further describes all of the work we as a nation need to be doing to keep ourselves protected. There are so many areas that terrorists could threaten our citizens.

I am glad I read this book to further educate myself. We as citizens of the USA need to be aware of what is going on to keep ourselves safe. I suggest you read this fascinating and educational book. Then writing our congressmen to make the necessary changes to keep our families safe!

Brilliantly written to easily read and understand.

Wow! This is a riviting and education piece!

I have to admit that I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System, but I am so glad I read it! Anthony Davis obviously has the background to put together such an awesome piece on a topic that, to my knowledge, hasn't been full covered before.

I learned so much about the military, how terrorism can and will affect us, security, and even the ships themselves! I've learned more in this one book than I've ever learned from reading any other reference piece before.

After reading Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System, I have a new found respect for those in the field and I'm thankful that Mr. Davis has put this book together to educate the public without making the content dull or boring. I found it difficult to put this book down as I wanted to keep learning more through every turn of the page.

Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System is an honest-to-goodness factual book written by my good friend Tony Davis. I think that his writing style not only keeps you aware of what can happen and has happened, but what can be done to reduce the risk from his actual hands-on experience and background. Tony's factual accounts of what are encountered in our cargo and the security as a whole makes this a valuable book. [...]
He reiterates some great reminders, what could have been done and experiences with what he lived and worked with from 9-11 forward. I highly recommend this book for pleasure or for a reference book.

His first book (I hope there will be more) proved to be double pleasure and surprise. First, getting to know more about Charles Hicks the author, then reading the story that proves this book has nothing to do with computers. It's a story about interesting, good people, an exciting flight plan, romance, that secret cargo and -- I can't give it all away. More, Charles! LB

I found this novel riveting and a great page turner would appriciate the excitement the author presented. Terri were a brave young lady who falls in love with an older man, who had save her from kidnappers. The story takes you on an adventure on a remote island that turns into a thriller. The crew fight for survival with little food and fresh water. I gave it five stars for its originality and true life situation. What happen with Terri and Will after their ordeal..? I guess this will be in the next book. I hope they get marry and live happy ever after. They was so much in love.

The pace of this thriller was very fast, and it was fun reading. I could easily see this story becoming a very good popcorn movie. One caution though--it would need a "PG" rating for sex and violence, depending on how it was filmed. I'll readily loan the book to adult friends, but not children.
The peril in the story was very unexpected. I am certainly looking forward to a sequel, because I want to see the relationship development between the characters Will and Terri!

I am an Architect and would highly recommend this book for all readers looking for information on causes of falls and tripping, research relating to technical data, and opinions about stair design. The author compares the research of car safety design to stair safety design which is applicable considering the ubiquity and necessity of stairs, both interior and exterior.

Stairs need to be designed not only for safe use by all ages, but also for increased use as a means of stimulating healthy active living.

I have just purchased my third copy of The Staircase. My previous copies were never returned to me by the borrows but still found their way to our towns' school libraries. John Templer, previously a professor of Architecture at Georgia Tech is emminently qualified to write about all aspects of the staircase. The evolution, history and trivial facts of the staircase are fascintating reading for all ages. The pictures will draw you to continue reading. The topic was so intriguing, I found myself wading into the engineering specifications, hazards (including famous people who died on a staircase)and safety issues. I never ascend or descend a staircase without considering the depth of the tread and the height of the rise, the height of the handrail. What a terrific school project appropriate for the 12 year old and over set. I can see them measuring the dimensions of the stairs in their towns' public buildings, gathering statistics on accident and injuries on these stairs and asking the town fathers why this is so!

The Eighth Sea and its Merchant Marine
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-03
_Inspite of the fact that this excellent volume was originally written over a quarter of a century ago it is still the best general reference on the Great Lakes fleet and the amazing engineering marvel of the St. Lawrence Seaway that it depends upon. As the book points out, this is one of the largest, smoothest running tranportation systems in the world- maybe that is why it is so little noticed or appreciated. Yet, that makes it no less a maritime miracle. It is a matrix of locks, dams, and channels that creates an eighth sea that rises 600 feet from tidewater to heartland.

_Don't worry about the information being too dated. It reflects the heyday of the fleet in the 70's. Most of these vessels are still in service and when it comes right down to it there hasn't been all that much new construction since then. There is a full secion of the great 1000 foot superlakers that were built during this period. The appendix gives a complete listing of the entire fleets of the U.S. Lake Carriers Association and Canadian Dominion Maritime Association up to the late seventies. It should be noted the many, many ocean going vessels of the world that ply the lakes are not listed.

_The chapters on the history of Great Lakes shipping from schooners to whalebacks is especially fascinating. It is a pity that so few people know the saga of life on the lakes in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was truly an unique world of its own.

_This book is very well illustrated with numerous photos, drawings, maps, and graphs.

A richly-illustrated sourcebook for cargo ship enthusiasts.

I started reading this novel in my Canadian literature course.
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, especially seeing how this is a school thing.
This woman brings you right into her life, showing you the different demented ways that some people on this planet live.
She tells you about her insanely horrifying life.
Everything from her marriage, her drug addicted ways, her affair with a married man in prison, giving birth to her baby boy in a morgue next to a dead woman whom she had just seen a few days before in a restaurant where she was having breakfast with her kidnapper, who is also the wife of her childs father.
This novel gets better by the paragraph. It grasps your interest so tight that you don't want to put it down until it's finished.
I would honestly rate this non-fiction novel the best I have ever read.

I was a bit skeptical to read this book, all I knew about the author was that she wrote poems - and I hadn't read any of them. Much to my pleasure - this book was fascinating. It was raw, real, honest and utterly irrisistable. I found myself reading slower and slower as I got to the end - simply because I didn't want it to end. The reader is immediatly brought into the narrator's world, you feel her feelings, her fright and her pain. It's a great read - one that you won't ever forget.
