THE BOYS GET THEIR JUST REWARD!Review Date: 2007-03-03
From Broadway to the Bowery by McFarland Books, chronicles the career of the group from the earliest appearance in 1935's gritty drama "Dead End" to their final picture, "In the Money" released nearly 25 years later in 1958, 91 films in all. For me, the book was quite educational. I wasn't aware that the Kids first few pictures were also crime dramas. Films such as "Crime School" and "Angels with Dirty Faces" showed the East Siders at their youngest, and most abrasive, still several years before they would develop into the lovable bunch of delinquents I knew and loved.
Another fact which came as a surprise to me was how the group split, with one faction becoming The Little Tough Guys for a series of films at universal, and the other group heading to the low-rent district of Monogram Films as The East Side Kids. This included the separating of Leo and David Gorcey. Interestingly, it is the Monogram films that seem to be better re-called today, in part due to the teamings with horror star Bela Lugosi in "Spooks Run Wild" and "Ghosts on the Loose".
This fabulous book features a complete filmography of all their films with complete cast & credits, release date, running time, synopsis, and commentary by author Leonard Getz. In addition to the filmogrpahy, we get bios of all the group's stars including Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell, Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, and more. Nearly 200 rare photographs accompany the text. You'll probably be amazed as I was at how few of the Boys' films are available on DVD, or even VHS for that matter. A true tragedy for baby-boomers like myself who cut his teeth on their antics.
As I read through the filmography I was also quite surprised at how many films I haven't seen, particularly the Little Tough Guy series. Hopefully Universal will fix this atrocity with a box set of all the films.
Simply a magnificent book from start to finish! Oh how I miss those Saturday afternoons!

Told me more than I ever knew...Review Date: 2008-09-27
This book is amazing. I had been following e-Sports (professional gaming) since 2003 and loved every minute of it. I had favorite teams and watched all the tournaments like ESWC and CPL. I thought I understood the scene and why everyone did what they did. Game Boys brought so many things to light that I never had even thought about. I always figured most of these kids were gaming because it was something fun for them to do and they could win some cash. As the book reveals its more than that. These kids are not only looking to be the next professional sports stars but the behind the scenes is like a real sports team. There is countless amounts of drama between the top players and arguments about who should be calling strategies. The scene is much more tense then you'd be lead to believe on the outside. The rivalry between compLexity and 3D brought to light a whole other side of the game. To see the 2 polar opposites of each other facing off is incredible.
If you ever enjoyed e-Sports or gaming for that matter you should definitely pick up this book. It will show you things that you never knew about. It not only holds a plethora of information for those who have never heard of professional gaming until now, but also goes so much deeper for those who have been into the scene.
This is a must-have for any gamer.
Kane captures the voice of the e-sports community, and has my vote!Review Date: 2008-08-02
I started reading this book with reservations...I expected this to be another "oh yeah, some guy thinks it's cool," type of approach that would miss the mark on the intensity and seriousness that teenagers and younger adults were taking these games...these e-sports.
After completing the final chapter today, I'm so enthused to say that Kane has put to words what no one, to date, had been able to. From the coach/jock-like description of Jason Lake, to the journalistic rumors of Levine's business practices, Michael Kane has captured many aspects of the gaming community that, until now, I thought would take years to be written down as a part of history.
The truth is, if you're involved in the e-sports scene, inspired by the younger generation's choice of competition, or simply a parent of a gamer, this book is for you. Your jaw will be dropped at how far gaming has come, and how immense, intense, and elaborate the gaming community has become, not only in size, but in personality and every aspect that could define a competitive sport!

This game is not meant for gamers. In fact is is exactly the opposite. This book is for people on the periphery who are sports fans, not gamers. It makes competitive gaming into competitive sports.
Game Boys Is a WinnerReview Date: 2008-06-29
As a participant full of passion for the videogame industry, there were so many times I found myself identifying with CompLexity GM Jason Lake and harbouring feelings of resentment towards Craig Levine. Like Jason Lake, I believe in the grassroots foundation of this wonderful industry, and even though Craig Levine has done much to get competitive videogaming out there into the main stream of today's world, I often felt that Levine's tactics were less than honourable, and I am of the generation when honour was at the forefront of how you conducted your life. These are elements which make for a great book - eliciting emotion and appreciation from the reader, making the reader care about the characters in the story.
Michael Kane has artfully included every aspect of our advancing technological world - global friendships and rivalries, heroes and villains, supportive families and families who feel the gamer is wasting his or her time. Corporations who only look at the biggest and the best for exposure, instead of looking at and supporting the grassroots events and players who keep the industry churning forward on a daily basis. Event promoters who are in it for the dollar, and to heck with the injury they do to our industry by scamming the players who have poured their heart, soul and often their last dollar into feeding their passion for gaming in hopes of making it to the winner's circle.
I commend Michael for the honesty of his words, even the ones which cast a less than idyllic light on the e-sports industry, because the end result shows that our cyberathletes truly are no different from the mainstream sports athletes. They train, they play, they do things they shouldn't, but when it comes right down to the final seconds it's all about the game and the opponent in front of them. Game Boys shows how far we as a competitive market have come, but also shows how far we have yet to go. Michael touched very briefly on the girls in gaming, and while some things have changed since Game Boys went to print, much has stayed the same, from the disdain which meets many girl gamers head on, to the insults and unwelcome photos hurled at them on XBL. While the industry is still very much a boys' club, the girls are rapidly gaining ground - perhaps in the future we can look forward to a book on Gamer Girls to compliment Gamer Boys - what do you say, Michael?

The romance is cute and realistic, making the story line believable.

Getting Lost is Fun Review Date: 2008-12-12
I loved this book; from the very beginning you felt that trouble was awaiting Cordelia and Jacob. But through their troubles and their little adventures, the protagonists go to know each other, and the readers got to empathizes with them as well. This is a coming-of-age story that teaches you to embrace your fears instead of fending them off; all written in an engaging plot and illustrated through hilarious conversations.Who knew getting lost would turn out to be so much fun ?

It's not those stupid-teen books, there's no stupid mean girls - good girl drama. it's just a journey of a girl who falls in love with the person she never thought she would have feelings for.
i highly recommend.

Cordelia has the trip all planned out, with an itinerary -- there are even scheduled rest stops. This is how she does everything.
But that's not how Jacob does anything! He likes to take his time and not rush through anything. Cordelia knows that the trip is off to a bad start when Jacob shows up at noon when he was supposed to be there at nine!
While they are in the desolate, California desert -- the car breaks down. How will perfectionist Cordelia and wild child Jacob handle the situation? And will Cordelia be able to stay faithful to her perfect boyfriend?
I really liked reading this kind of predictable book. There were enough twists and turns to keep you interested! GETTING LOST WITH BOYS is a very fun book to read while basking in the sun!

An excellent introduction to the Bible for young peopleReview Date: 1999-08-08
I believe that the editors have made a mistake in targeting this Bible for ages 2-4. This edition is suitable for children up to age 6 or 7. Our 6 year old granddaughter loves this little book and I am sure she will continue to use it through 1st Grade.
I highly recommend this beautiful little book.
You can start much earlier than age 2. Great beginner BibleReview Date: 2003-08-25
We read the stories to her in their entirety and then summed it up in one sentence like, "Jacob had a dream." or "Sarah had a baby." By the time she was 18 months old, she could repeat those sentences back and give us small details like what the dream was about ("angels"). She could also identify every character by their picture by then. This is a great Bible for very young children and if you use it wisely, you can establish a hunger for God's Word early. Our daughter is now 4 1/2 and still loves Bible stories more than any others, which I believe started with this Bible when she was an infant.

Fizz & Fish. Fry `em Foul. A Fun Romp in Fresh Water. Review Date: 2006-12-10
>> He didn't have a church of his own, but he had a huge army surplus tent that he set up frequently, much to the dismay of his immediate family. They usually made up his entire congregation, unless he could come up with ideas to draw a crowd. <<
At that point I had an ah ha! Maybe, Amazon Shorts would draw a crowd for Whitley's voice! Having read into the first few paragraphs, I was cheering in his camp. Even though, as I've mentioned in other reviews, I'm not a churchgoer or a doctrine digester, I enjoy prime humor almost anytime, anywhere, from any clear, un-invested voice.
By un-invested I mean that the talent aims foremost to wide-market entertainment. In that case it's okay by me if the voice also happens to provide intrigue about free-spirited Godly stuff.
Anyone gets my willing grins when he makes good fun out his own understandably fizzled brain sparks:
>> His previous brainstorm hadn't worked out as well as he had planned. It wasn't that it was that bad of an idea. It was just that there wasn't enough people in the community willing to pay five dollars a plate for a "Soul Food" dinner of turnip greens and cornbread--and then having to listen to him preach for two hours. <<
This stepped up to zealous intrigue:
>> Brother Hollis was already planning his sermon for the fish fry, and wasn't about to pass up a chance to make it happen. "Just what do you mean by `Not `zackly legal, Brother Red?" <<
Phil most definitely had the Southern drawl in a tight package:
>> "I've heerd `bout that, Red," Small Tim said. "Pap called hit `callin' catfish, er sompin' lak that." <<
After a few times of these guys mentioning "pushin' catfish aside" to grab something from the cooler, I'z gettin' a mite suspisheeous:
>> Dubya reached behind the seat of his jeep and took out a six-pack of tall-boy Buds, pushed a few catfish aside and dropped it into the cooler. <<
Whitley was good with the descriptive quips which set the atmosphere (note the "squinted ... smoke":
>> "Long as y'all don't mind a'wadin'. How deep is it?" Dubya asked while he lit a Camel and squinted at Tim over the smoke. <<
The concluding scenes of the catfish free-for-all, as they connected to the baptismal banquet were so well wrought and so hilarious, I didn't just laugh uproariously; I wheezed and wheezed, and squeezed my lungs like I used to do regularly as a kid, when something struck me so funny I couldn't stop the giggling fits to breathe. That side-shaking, tear-spewing type of funny bone exercise is the best medicine on heaven or earth. Thank you, Whitley!!
Yep, I agree. A keeper. Just be sure to gut it right, and go for mo.
