My family loves this book!

This is one of my family's favorite books! The rhyming is fun and easy for pre-schoolers to catch on to. My kids felt like they were a big part of the story by reciting the sounds of each animal - it also helped them by letting them feel like they were reading along with me. We've added a little of ourselves to the story too... I tickle them with the turkeys; we crow like the roosters; and we snap like the gators with our arms! The pictures aren't all that but for us... it's all about making it fun!

Fun to read.

Some children's books are fun to read. Others are not. This one is fun and easy to read and my children really like it, and have liked it for a long time.

This book was such a disappointment given the promising title. There are two typos in my book and the fuzzy pictures are a poor attraction for kids I know who enjoy bright colors and sharp pictures. I loved the concept but the performance was weak.

We borrowed this book from the library, just something randomly picked, and my 22 month old daughter only wanted to read this one book for the whole week! and even after having it for 3 weeks she still wanted this book more than any others, and she loves books. so i ordered her one. we have had it for a few months now and it is still her favourite book. there are so many animals which i think makes it extremely interesting for many toddlers, and the rhyming, lilting way its written is very soothing. the illustions are just gorgeous--beautiful water colors in very bright and wonderful colors. A great book for a gift to a new mommy (i have several on hand now).

Good Sibling Book, Too
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-11
Besides the aspects other reviewers have praised (pleasingly simple storyline, beautiful illustrations, positive image of nursing), this is also a great new sibling book. The book does not explicitly address the baby's arrival or any sibling rivalry issues, yet it portrays a family successfully juggling two children. The parents take turns with various child care tasks, and everybody's needs are met -- what a warm image of how a new baby can be worked into a family's routines. My daughter (almost 3) enjoyed this book from the library several months ago, and now that she is a sister-to-be, we're buying our own copy. I want to prepare her for the baby's arrival, but I'm wary of overdoing it with new baby books; this subtle sibling book is a welcome addition to our collection.

A beautiful and classic book that has a sweet picture of a nursing Mama and Baby

This is a beautiful book that deserves to be named a classic. As a breastfeeding advocate I love that there is a picture of a breastfeeding Mama and baby in the book. From that same standpoint I am a bit frustrated that this is considered a book aimed specifically at promoting breastfeeding. As to not mislead a potential buyer, there is only ONE nursing picture in the book. The book is not about breastfeeding at all. It is about a sweet little cat that sees lots of amazing things as he travels through the night. With that said, each time a baby is shown breastfeeding instead of bottle feeding, the world comes that much closer to understanding that feeding a baby = nursing a baby. So for that I am eternally grateful to the author. On the whole this book is wonderful and is a favorite of mine and my children.

I bought this book for my daughter because I heard it contained positive breastfeeding imagery. There is one page where the mother nurses the baby in a rocking chair. It is absolutely beautiful, as is the entire book. I was pleased to see the rural setting that reminded me of my own childhood. A gorgeous book for anyone, whether interested in the nursing scene or not!

This book allows lots of room for discussion about "what the cat saw." My almost 2 year-old son has had us read this book over and over, ever since we got it. He loves to see the normal everyday things in the book and talk about what is happening---the little girl getting a bath, the baby nursing, the cow drinking water, etc. A great book to cuddle up with.

Sweet and wonderfully illustrated
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-02
The illustrations make this book as the text is very simple and quite repetitive- the humans are busy with the family, but the cat pays attention. The cat watches a rain storm, a hunting owl, the roosters, the nighttime= all the wonderful things that cats notice. Finally, in the morning the cat falls asleep and the little girl starts noticing things the other family members miss.

There is an older girl- maybe 6, and a baby boy so this would be a great story for someone who has a new baby sibling. My favorite human scene is when the mom gets up during the night to feed the baby brother and has a look of peace and contentment- every mother's favorite part of baby nights. I would have given the book 5 stars if the baby got to snuggle in bed with his mom- it would have seemed just a bit more real. I still recommend the book highly.

We bought this in a discount bin when my daughter was about 4 months old. Now she is 14 months old, and although the book is getting a bit dog-eared and I've taped torn pages, she will pull all the other books off the shelf to get to it. It isn't even necessary for me to read it to her for her to want to flip through it. She loves it! I've just ordered 4 more of Barney Saltzberg's books on here, to give Peekaboo Kisses a much-needed break.

We were given this book when I had my first child. He LOVED it. He would kiss all the animals over and over, opening each flap to do so. Pretty soon he was doing this all on his own! It was adorable. Now my daughter LOVES it too. She also will sit on the floor and open each flap to give each animal a kiss. We have read this so much it is held together with a lot of tape. Highly recommend to anyone with small children or even as a great baby shower gift. How can you go wrong with a book about kisses!

What a fantastic message this story has, which can be especially applicable to biracial children. The main character, Rob, is a penguin. He's not happy being black and white, so he decides to investigate what it would be like to be other colors (green like a crocodile, yellow like a lion, pink like a flamingo, etc.). After all his searching, he realizes there are others like him who are also beautiful, concluding that he's happy in his own skin, being black and white. VERY cool!

I love it more every time I read it

What a great book! I have two boys, 8 years old and 3 weeks old. I bought this book as a Christmas present for the baby knowing that the 8 year old would enjoy reading it to him and that is exactly what has happened. Me and my older son both enjoy reading it to the baby.

It's a neat twist on a pretty standard tale (the plain animal who wants to be different). Rob is a little penguin who explores the rainbow by trying out the different colors of animals such as a red fox, a yellow lion and our favorite the pink flamingo. What is so great is the multiple learning opportunities on every page. Colors, textures, animals, even characteristics of the animals are introduced, all while teaching that the best way to be is to be yourself. The illustrations are adorable and the text is bold and colorful. It is also very well constructed so I expect it will survive a growing baby boy. I know that we will enjoy this book for a long time. I'm going to order more books from this author right now!

These books are so much fun. I was given the Sheep in a Jeep by an old family friend who said that it was her grandchildren's favorite books and it quickly became my daughter's favorite too (she was a year when given the book). So I went ahead and ordered a handful more... Sheep out to Eat and Sheep in a Shop are both very good and very comical especially when you own a flock of 30+ sheep. You can only imagine that's exactly how sheep would behave if in these circumstances. The rhyming is excellent, the illustrations are hilarious and I would highly recommend these books to you.

Those crazy sheep are nothing but an accident looking for a place to happen! They can't keep out of trouble, and that just tickles my 5yo son and I into hysterics. The entire batch of sheep books -- and the only thing wrong with them is there's just not ENOUGH of them -- are just as funny the first time they're read as they are the 20th time. They're a great source for the "what do you think will happen next?" prompt, the "what do you think they should have done instead?" prompt, and for reading lessons as well.

Hilarious for kids and even adults!

Review Date: 2008-04-25
We have a few pop-up type books and a lot of them just have something stand up, or have pieces that are too delicate for younger toddlers. Although this one is also easy to rip, there aren't tiny pieces so it takes a little more tug than some others. But the pop-ups are bright, not too busy, and really engage my toddler. Heads bobble, arms wave. We'll definitely keep an eye out for others in this series. On sale, only, of course, since the lifespan of this will surely be limited as much as my daughter loves it and will eventually manage to rip the pop-ups!

My daughter (26 months) LOVES this book! I read it to her often but she really spends lots of time looking at it on her own, too. She will flip through it saying each animal's name, then again making the sound of each animal, then one more time stating the main color on each page. Great big pop-ups really catch her attention. This book is especially helpful for learning colors or animal names. She loves it so much I have ordered her a couple of other Snappy Books for Christmas. Enjoy!

A friend gave this to me as a baby shower gift and I started reading it to my son at about 4 months.

At first it was the only book (out of many) to hold his attention all the way through. It still holds his attention now at 9 months no matter what he's doing when I open it.

The print and mechanical quality are first rate. The text is very well written and if I quote phrases from the book (at non-reading times) my son will recognize them and start giggling. The illustrations are quite clever and make learning entertaining.

If you buy no other children's book, buy this one! I plan to give it as a shower gift to all new moms from now on.

A TRUE TWO Stars Gets 3

Review Date: 2008-04-20
If it weren't for the illustrations, this book would be rated two stars. I saw this book advertised on Amazon's website among other children's books. The cover was so beautiful, that I had to read the reviews about the content and artistry of this book. I was seconds away from making a purchase when I decided to borrow it from the library instead. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and I liked the way the author took a spin on the mean old woman in a shoe rhyme and made it into a loving mother bunny rhyme. Children get to learn all kinds of uncommon words (at their age) like shed, trellis, etc. but the rhymes are just names of rabbits who sleep on those objects - boring and uncreative. Example, "Zed slept on the shed" The whole book from A to Z is like that. I was wondering why such a beautifully illustrated book was not such a hot seller on Amazon's rankings and found out why. It's pretty but not educational. I don't need my little one to learn uncommon names of people that are supposed to rhyme with the objects. If you want a good ABC book, I highly recommend Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. That is by far the best. It is very educational and very fun. As for numbers, I recommend Ten Little Ladybugs and/ or Over in the Meadow. Both are just excellent.

Illustrations are wonderful. Text is silly fun, but instructive in counting and alphabet. Just don't be so taken by the beautiful bunny drawings that you decide to get a bunny for your young one- they're more adult pets, despite their cuteness. They require a lot of care, research, adult attention and space to roam. Let your kids enjoy the pretty pictures instead.

Mama bunny lives in a shoe, has 26 babes, but knows just what to do. She tucks them into various "beds" as she counts them off. The detailed illustrations are what I like best about this book. My son loves studying them. He gets a kick out of the quirky places the bunnies sleep, esp Frankie in the hankie for some reason. I wish that this was written so that the bunnies' names and the places they slept started with the same letter. That would have reinforced the alphabetic aspect of this book, but maybe it's asking too much. I still really do like this one.

Unlike so many poorly executed rhyming books, this one is a joy to read. The rhymes are well constructed and creative. And the pictures are delightful. Just tonight, my 6 year old asked me to read it again as a bedtime story, because he loves to study the engrossing pictures. And we've enjoyed this book for years. I was happy to just now see that this author/illustrator pair have done other books together.

I'm such a sucker for rhymes. Fortunately, so are my kids. There's nothing like a story with pleasant and soothing rhymes to get them off to sleep quickly (giving me more time to write reviews :D) See, there's an Old Mother Rabbit who lives in a shoe. She has 26 children (those rabbits sure know how to multiply!) but she definitely knows what to do. The tale travels through the alphabet -naming each bunny and where they fall asleep (1 is named Abel, he slept on the table.....and so on) My kids delighted in guessing where each little bunny would sleep (some places were pretty strange - like who could fall asleep in candy???) It also taught them words they don't normally use (e.g. lane, holly, kettle). Counting, the alphabet, and rhyming.... all in one sweet little bedtime story. What more could a parent ask for - besides children who beg to go to bed?

Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE Dr. Seuss fan. We have almost all of his books and love reading them. I bought this one as a Christmas gift for my 2 year old son and we were so excited to read it. The story starts out super cute with a moose that has uninvited guests in his horns. But the ending is disgusting. The guests all end up stuffed up on a wall. The last picture is of the animals mounted on a wall with little Xs for their eyes. I did not want to get into a whole discussion on hunting and taxidermy with my 2 year old! Again, we LOVE Dr. Seuss and read at least one of his stories every day. I just thought this one was a little nasty.....

This book is so appropriate today, maybe more than when it was written in 1948 (a response to the New Deal, perhaps?)! I'm sure I appreciate the message (beware of freeloaders!!) more than my kids, but they enjoy the story and the pictures (as always) are priceless. Dr. Seuss was a national treasure and his books are all terrific.

I first read this book when I was a little girl. I was really impressed with it then, of all the Dr. Seuss books I thought it was the best because of the message. The poor moose is so soft-hearted, he lets everyone take advantage of him. It has a wonderful message for children to learn about "users". If you only read one Dr. Seuss book to your children, read them this one.

Great illustrations, characters and an amazing setting make Tut, Tut (Time Warp Trio) a fabulous find for young readers. There's plenty of laughs here for parents as well in this very well written novel.

Join Joe, Fred, Sam and Anna (Joe's sister) as they travel back to ancient Egypt through a book that lands them in quite a situation. The problem is that they need that same book to get back home, and they lost it!

There's non-stop adventure and some wonderful history that may well encourage young readers to seek out more information about this period of Egyptian history.

Time-traveling is not as cool as you think. Being mummified, being trapped in a secret room and having your friend almost eaten by a crocodile is not cool. But what is cool is being treated as a royal guest in Thutmose III's palace, sailing in his boat and teaching him basketball. So, if you like things that are cool and not, you should read this hilariously funny book.

The book was about three boys and a girl who go to Egypt through a book that one of the boys uncles gave him. They have to travel through Egypt and find the book to get back home and meet a little challenge along the way named Hatsnat. I liked this book because we had just learned about Egypt so that made it better to understand.

I give this book five stars because it is very funny. It is also adveturous. The characters in this story (Joe, Fred, Sam) get in a lot of trouble and Sam almost gets eaten by a crocodile. I don't want to say more because I want you to read it for your self. I don't want to spoil the surprise.
