My son Nathaniel who is 3 years old absolutely loves this train book. I bought it along with All about Train DVD. He loves to point to the trains in the book while he spots them on the DVD. Nathaniel takes this book everywhere he goes. He also has My big Truck book which is by the same author. Very good books I recommend them. I will eventually buy the whole collection.

As a retired elementary teacher, I value literacy experiences for young children. I purchased this book for my grandson's third birthday. He already had "My Big Truck Book" and loves it, it is one of his favorites. He has well over 100 at the present time, but turns again and again to this one. "My Big Train Book" is fast becoming another favorite. The bright pictures are great. I would recommend either or both these books.

This was one of my favorite books as a kid, and as an adult, I cannot tell you how many times I reference it to people. I would seriously like to have copies on hand to pass out. I am still learning from this book. It's so fun and cute and I remember as a kid feeling like it totally captured my world. Buy it and read it over and over.

When my brothers and I were little, this book was one of our absolute favorites! In fact, I still have it, although now it is beaten and taped together. The illustrations are cute and colorful (I love the dragon eating pancakes and then the bread from the bread truck!) and the story is imaginative. Best of all there is plenty of opportunity for children to interact with the reader. For example, my mom or dad would read to us and we'd chant "There's no such thing as a dragon!" at all of the appropriate places! Kids will identify with Billy who has a very active imagination, and they will wish that they too had a dragon! I'm so glad it is still available so I can share it with my daughter!

Though this book has been around a while, I only recently discovered it at a book store. I got it for my child's school library (endorsed by librarian). My 6 1/2 yr old 1st grade daughter liked it. This age group still adores fantasy, but is beginning to be able to separate truth from fiction. Children delight in the boy in this story being right about the dragon being real. They can relate to parents not taking things they say seriously. It is fun to imagine this scenario really happening, but then admit it probably could not!

Hands down, my favorite book as a child. It was out of print for a while and I had to scour auction sites for a copy. It was well worth the hunt. I actually read it to my 4th/5th grade children in my classroom and they love it as much as I do. The fact that it is being reprinted for a whole new generation makes me very happy.

Jordan Petersen reads this book to his audience while explaining what the most important story ever told is all about, and why we find it in a child's book, or dreams.

I have just seen the book read on TV, but it certainly has charming pictures and by Petersen's account a primal message.
I'm getting a copy for my kids.

I'm 44 years old and after all these years I still remember living these adventures with Hal and Roger. As a 9 year old I read every book in the series that I could get my hands on. It kindled my love for books. I'm now ordering all of the "Adventure..." books I can for my boys. If you have young children with an active imagination, I highly recommend this series. I hope that it sparks in them a life-long love for reading.

I accidentally ran across this book at the school library. This is one of the best action-adventure books for children that I have read in a long time. I think it would be appropriate to compare it to Indiana Jones. There is action from the start to the finish. This book would appeal to any child from third grade and up. It would be perfect for the boy that doesn't like to read and needs something to sustain interest. I highly recommend this book.

Best counting book ever

Review Date: 2008-09-27
This is, quite simply, the best book I've ever seen for familiarizing small children with the numbers from 0 to 12 (not for teaching them to read, because there is no text). However, it needs an attentive adult to go through slowly with the child, inventing a story to correspond with the pictures. I doubt whether a child could get much from it if left to go through it alone.

On page 0 there is nothing -- just a snow-covered hillside. On page 1 there is one building, one adult, one child, one animal, one bird, etc. On page 2 there are two of everything, until, at page 12 there is a complete little village. The choice of 12 steps in the story is not accidental or arbitrary, but corresponds to the number of months in the year, so we start in the dead of winter, move to spring, summer, autumn and back to winter again.

Beautiful book, big!!!!

The book Anno's Counting Book is a great book for helping children with counting and learning basic math concepts. It helps with addition and subtraction as well as grouping items. The book starts at zero, which is one of few books that start with zero. This helps children grab the concept the zero is still a number even when there is nothing to count. The book goes all the way through the number 12. Children are also able to count the objects in the picture. Each object in that picture contains that number that is on the page.
The style of the book is very simple for young children. Each page contains one number. On that page there is only that specific number of items that children are able to participate and count along. On the left side of each page are counting blocks. The blocks can help children with their addition and subtraction by seeing how many blocks are missing or how many they have to add to make a certain number. On the right side of the page there is the written form of the number which helps children visually see what the number looks like. The illustrations in the book are also very colorful and detailed, but yet simple enough for the children to count the objects in the picture. As you go throughout the book, the pictures also change through the different seasons of the year.
The book Anno's Counting Book is a great wordless book for children who are just learning how to count. It helps with addition, subtraction, grouping items, and writing numbers.

I purchased this book in 1997 for my first born. It was and is along with Goodnight Moon the most memorable book/s of his babyhood. I will always cherish the way he would laugh at the pictures and say the words before I would, having memorized every page. He remembered the next page and would try to say it before I turned the page. He is now 9, an amazing and avid reader, a true lover of books. I think that love for books began early and Ba Ba Ha Ha started it all. I have difficulty giving up books, yet have surrendered most of our cherished board books to friends with younger children. I will never part with this book as it truly evokes the most wonderful and cherished memories. Please, Please publishers consider reprinting this book!

I received this book recently in a box of hand-me-down books from my stepsister. I first looked at it, and thought "how silly." To my amazement, my 14 month old daughter is FASCINATED with this book - she will turn the page and associate the pictures with the sounds. She brings it to us all the time to read. Yes, she actually "reads" this book to us at 14 months! Because it was a used book, it is showing a bit of wear, so I thought I would get a new copy for her. I did not realize I had such a rare book. I WISH THEY WOULD BRING THIS BOOK BACK! I guess I will have to bring out the duct tape to make it last.

My three children (6, 4, and 1) have grown up with Ba Ba Ha Ha and Oooh Oooh Moo. My older children read these books now to my baby, and he loves the books as much as my older kids. These are the perfect books for infants, and they're part of a handful of books that my older kids still remember and love. I was searching for these books for my friend's baby, and am terribly dissapointed that they're out of print! I hope that somehow the publisher could be persuaded to reissue these books -- they are wonderful!

Is there any way to give it SIX stars?

I can't believe this book is out of print--I was going to buy two more copies--one for a new baby, and another for my daughter, who has mercilessly colored her brother's copies of both Zimm books. WE LOVE THESE BOOKS! And as others have said, they're NOT just for infants--my 20-month-old daughter LOVES to imitate the pictures and anticipate "what comes next?" My son is developmentally disabled and doesn't have great vision--books like this are perfect for him--and they're so great looking with their striking design, I don't mind taking them with us in public. But now I guess I better be careful about that--they'll be so hard to replace! These are wonderful books.

This was an okay book. I got it from the library which is what I suggest you do. It has great photos which help you learn things such as clothing your baby, holding your baby, swaddling your baby, bathing your baby and more. Most of the photos are just fun to look at. I read this book after reading many other baby care books but it offered some new ideas for care which I now use. The only problem with this book is that it shows babies lying on their sides or stomach to sleep which is not recommended because of the increased risk of SIDS. Babies should be placed on their back. Keep that in mind and the book is a good read.

It really is a simple book about calm, soothing parenting and preparing for baby, but depending on your needs/experience, it could be all you need. I bought several as gifts for friends and they all love it.

I purchased this book while I was pregnant and the cover brought tears to my eyes (still does). I believe strongly in a relaxed, calm, loving approach to parenting, and was annoyed by all the people who tried to convince me that I should be stressed out about this baby! This book really met my needs - informative and practical, and a soothing read for both calm and nervous parents. The black and white photography is just beautiful.

I'm trying to find it for every pregnant friend!

I actually bought this book before I even knew I was pregnant and put it away for the future. A few short months later, it was the first book I chose to read about parenting and baby care. It was comforting to read such straight-forward, child-centered advice. I believe that reading this book has shaped my attitude toward parenting into a more natural, simple approach and has helped me keep my focus on my child's needs before anything else. It is reassuring to know that you don't have to have it all or know it all to be a good parent. I highly recommend this book for other first-time moms.

Seeing the cover of this book I was apprehensive. Another book on how beautiful it is to have children, with little substantial help, I thought. Well it is about the beauty and a lot lot more. A comparitively short book, each paragraph has practical, sage advice on a host of things one would only learn after years of experience. Written by the daughter of a midwife, the book has years of expereince to draw from. Advice ranges from dealing with family, pets, and guests with bad timing, to setting up a useful nursery. We plan to give this book as a gift to several expecting friends of ours.

A little bug sneezes and each consequence leads to a bigger one creating in the end total chaos in town, and all because a little bug went ka-choo!
This book is a fun way of introducing the idea that even our smallest actions can have important consequences. The story is funny, and the rhymes are catchy.
The book is by Dr. Seuss under another pseudonym, what else could we expect from the good doctor but a hilarious story that children will love???

The consequences were far reaching and wide ranging when one little bug sneezed - just what happens, it ripples out and are quite fun. The illustrations are rich and warm, soft curves and good colours with lots going on in each to maintain interest in repeated readings of it.

This has beautiful rhythm to it and is easy for children to get predictive about, learning to anticipate and the value of language, and rhythm.

As an adult I get a bit bored with it - it is quite fun but not for repeated readings, but it is high on the reading request list at home so it gets read repeatedly at the moment.

This is such a realistic story, and sweet as well.

We have two sisters. The older one, like older sisters everywhere, is very protective of her younger sister. She doesn't jump rope, or go to school, or sew a button without making sure her sister is safe. And her sister lets her, until one day she's tired of having cookies and lemonade managed for her, and tired of being told how to do things and when.

So she leaves. She leaves her house, and her block, and goes right to an empty field where she lies down and thinks about things for a while.

And when her worried big sister comes out the door, the little one stays still and doesn't answer, and doesn't answer, until her older sister sits right down and cries.

At this point the little sister does just the right thing, which she's learned from her older sister. And as they go home, we're told that they now protected each other, and I cry.

It's just a very sweet story, one I really recommend for any sister.

Great story for sisters - and parents!

I bought this book to prepare our eldest for our 2nd daughter. The sisters in this story are about 4 or more years apart, while my first 2 daughters are less than 2 years apart. So the story was a little beyond our first when we first read it to her (at not yet 2), but she quickly grew into it and enjoyed it. It helped her understand that even though she was older and would have more responsibilities, her younger sister would eventually be able to help too. It also helped me to be cognizant of how many times I make demands of my daughter and talk with her about it.

When we eventually read this book to our 2nd, she didn't really get it until our 3rd daughter was born. Then, we made a point to re-read it to our 2nd (who was almost 4). Around that time, I had a conversation with our 2nd about how, when the baby was born, the baby would need lots of help, but eventually would grow up and then the 2nd and the baby would take care of each other. The 2nd thought, and said, "Just like in that book."
I look forward to reading it to the baby once she's older. Brava Charlotte Zolotow--a wonderful story with great lessons without being pedantic!

I have 2 daughters and found this book while searching for a new story about sisters. The reviews were so good, and the pictures I could see so sweet that I ordered it. When it arrived I read it to myself and indeed my eyes did smart towards the end. But instead of thinking about my daughters I found myself thinking of myself and my 2 older sisters. I related perfectly to the conflicting feelings of the little sister, and to the conclusion in which love for her big sister won out, but she still kept her afternoon alone to herself, something that's hers alone. I adore the illustrations and feel the story is perfectly told for about 3-7 year olds - just enough repetition for new readers, too. I'm impressed with the way it addresses the topic of conflict between sisters, without making anyone the bad guy, or without being obnoxious or shallow. My daughters are still a little too young for this book but I expect it will become a classic in our family. My highest compliments to this author.

I found this book in a public library in Japan and borrowed it to read to my 3 year old son. He has a strong interest in trains, so I thought this could be a good break from the daily grind of Thomas the Tank Engine stories.

The story is about a steam engine named Choo Choo who hauls passengers, mail, and baggage to and fro. She has a dream to be free from her monotonous life and to be admired for her speed and grace. She finally gets the chance to run without a load and ends up running out of control. Her patient engineer and conductor find her and bring her home safely. She learns a lesson and doesn't wish to run off alone anymore.

The story bears a striking resemblance to Stop, Train, Stop! a Thomas the Tank Engine Story (Beginner Books(R)). That is another story where a train decides to run away as fast as it can in order to impress onlookers. I can't help but think that the Thomas version is based almost wholly on the Burton story of Choo Choo.

The charcoal art is amazing. Each page is illustrated with a smoky charcoal sketching that makes the old-timey-ness of the story come to life. The greasy, dirty, smoky world of steam locomotives becomes a real-live place to readers of this book.

The quaint "Once upon a time" beginning was a little strange, but soon forgotten. However the layout of the text itself was something I could never get over. The shrinking of each line of text into a cone, or the lines shaped in waves made reading aloud difficult. It is easy to read ahead, but much of that skill also relies on visual cues from the text itself. I found myself tripping over certain phrases due to the unorthodox text. The clever textual layout may add artistic merit to the book, but it detracts from the book as a read-along.

That said, it's a fun book with lots of train sounds for kids to catch on to. The story teaches that one shouldn't go off without a good plan, but also that loved ones are always there to help you when you need help.

First 'real' book our Very Active 2 year old will sit through in entirety!

My 3rd son loves trains much more than my 1st who loved them a lot, but...although he doesn't have a ton of words yet and is only starting to put 3 or more words together can tell you the entire plot of this story...fills in the word missing if you stop for a second...points out people in the book as his cat, his grandma, etc...it has everything a train loving kid could ask for including another favorite with sounds and farm animals! Great classic...hope they come out with a board book for those nights when you really need to get them to bed!!! or to take in the car!!!

Cassette is useless, but the story is delightful

Choo Choo the runaway engine is a delightful story that mesmerizes three to four year old boys who like trains. Our son asks for this volume each night.
As with all of Virginia Lee Burton's books, the illustrations are delightful, here all rendered in charcoal, which is strangely appropriate for the "shiny black engine" at the center of the story.
The story is simple and easily understood by little readers, and they can pick out some words and map them to the illustrations. There is nothing objectionable in the tale, involving an engine who wants to break free of her responsibilities and run away to be the center of attention. Her engineer, conductor, and coal-man all work hard to chase her and bring her back, and she learns the lesson that running away from those who care for you typically ends in disaster.
We bought our edition in London, without the cassette, which strikes me as a bit datted in this CDROM and DVD era.
Highly recommended.

My train-loving son really enjoyed this book many times but we never bought it because it takes a little while to read it. Some nights when you're trying to hurry up the bedtime routines it feels like a very, very long time to read it.

My 25 month old love this book!

Now at 32 months, he loves it even more. He can recite the entire book page by page. He knows the names of the characters and their jobs. He confirms that the "coal car fell off the bridge onto the barge and now the train derrick picks it up." all the sketches are black and white and quite unique. i recommend this book for all ages, boy or girl.

This is an adorable farm book with a twist- the language is predictable so young children can easily sing/read along. If you have puppets (or a little toy farm)kids love to act out the story too.

Don't miss out on this one

This is the cutest book. All the kids just love it, from 1-5 years. You can sing the words to the book to the song "Skip to my lou" There is a cute little white mouse hiding on every page. The kids can't get enough of it!

Illustrations as Fun as the Song-like Story

My two-year-old is CRAZY about this catchy, colorful book. Not only is it populated with silly, misbehaving animals playing tricks on Tom Farmer, and written to the rhythm of a song, but there's a little mouse hiding on every page. It would be appropriate for kids 1 years +.

This is one of my favorite books to read to my preschool class. They learn the book quickly and love to chant along with it. The children also love to search for the mouse on each page.
