We bought these to give to our one-year old for Christmas. He absolutely loves them! They're durable, so will hold up over time, the pictures are colorful and he's really interested in touching all of the textures. Best thing is that they really grow with your child because as they get older you can play games with the cards, and the cards also have the german, spanish, french and chinese pronouciations of each word! Overall, these are very reasonably priced and I would highly recommend them for little ones, especially if they love books already.

my 12 month old LOVES these cards. of all the toys she has, she ALWAYS goes for these. great durability and quality. the jelly isn't sticky anymore, but otherwise, the other textures are perfect. we also use them for my 3 year old by practicing letter recognition and sounds. each card has parent suggestions for teaching older children. these cards are perfect!

Fanstastic...highly reccomend!

I bought these cards for Chrismas when my son was about 9 months old. I went thru the cards once or twice a week and he was saying "ba" for ball and several other "words" well before a year old. The manufacturer recommends these for an 18 month old, but why wait? I also have the Touch and Feel animals and those are great too! I just cant say enough nice things about these cards. And contrary to other posts, they are very durable.

a good choice for an active boy

I'm so glad i tried these flash cards, and i intend to get more in the same series.

my son is 14 months, very active, not very verbal (at least not in our recognizable lanuage yet!) but he will sit and look and feel and laugh at these flash cards, and i know that as i use repetition, he will benefit from this learning tool.

and another plus, the box keeps the cards safe, and he has yet to destroy any of it! his personal favorite is "jelly" because it is so sticky! very fun!

WONDERFUL PRODUCT

This is a very sweet story about a group of friends who live together happily and cooperate very well together until one of them becomes dissatisfied with "the rules" or habits that become a ritual part of their lives. Duck wants to stir the soup! What to do! A good story on how people grow up and begin trying new things and families have to learn to adapt to the new found roles and skills of their members.

This book does have quiet a few words, and at first that made me think it may not keep the interest of my preschool class. But I was wrong. They absolutely love this book. It is a great book that demonstrates friendship and teamwork. Do not hesitate to buy. It is well worth it. It has a great message that would be wonderful for a child of any age. Even adults who get stuck in a rut. Enjoy!

I did not know the extent to which my daughter would come to love this book when I purchased it. Had I known, I would have found a hardcover edition. Let me just say, this is the first book that my almost 4 year old memorized (word for word). This is the first book that my 9 year old will go to when he wants to read to her (e.g. he wants to read it and needs an excuse).

It is a warm tale about friendship, sharing, and overcoming conflict/compromise. It handles conflict naturally (e.g. real characters that really argue and act just like my kids). Real characters with real feelings and vivid imaginations portrayed with flawless, humorous illustrations (we especially love when Squirrel and Cat envision Duck's new shop). The colors of the artwork are warm and orange - just like pumpkin soup. You feel like you are peering in on their lives (like the two little bugs that appear on every page). Most importantly, this book does not come off preachy - so I think it rings true with children. In fact, my daughter uses this book to relate sharing issues - all I need to say is "remember how Duck wanted to use Squirrel's special spoon?" and she gets it - instantly.

And - for some odd reason - my children are now fascinated with pumpkins and want to cook. We have made pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin ravioli... and.... Pumpkin soup - The Best You Ever Tasted!

I teach fourth grade and use this book every year to teach writing. I use it as an introduction on writing a descriptive essay on a place that is special to the child. I also use it to teach similes and metaphors. The children love this book and they really seem to "get it" when I point out the vivid descriptions and the similes and metaphors. The language in the book is just beautiful. It is one of my all time favorite children's books!

I am the parent who picks out books for the kids, whether it's at the library or the book store. It's not very often that my husband comments on my choices but this one he came to me right after our 3-yo daughter's bedtime and said how wonderful it is. The text is so lovely and tender, and the illustrations are so rich and lifelike. It really gives a sense of connection to both nature and family roots. A real pleasure for kids & parents alike.

Patricia MacLachlan creates a heart warming masterpiece through a simple country family's connection with each other and their land. All the Places to Love begins with Eli's birth and his first view of the countryside his family calls home. Eli would soon grow to love this countryside through his experiences with his mother, father, and grandparents. They each have a place on the farm, which holds a special place in their heart. Mama loves the hill where she can see the sun rise on one side and set on the other. Papa love the fields and working in them. Grandma shares her love for the river with Eli as they sail notes down stream to one another. The barn grows special to Eli's heart after sharing experiences with Grandpa working in a place that brings joy to his life. Eli creates his personal getaway where the spring rains come and turn the meadows into marsh. The paintings by Mike Wimmer combined with the words by MacLachlan capture the passion filled anticipation of Eli as he awaits the birth of his baby sister. Eli is eager to show Sylvie "all the places to love."

The other reviews did a great job describing this book. I agree with what they said about the beauty, emotion, and love in this book. Here are my top two reasons why this is an important book:

1. Richness of language. Developmentally, if children are exposed to language rich in vocabulary, structure, and grammar, it helps in so many ways. If you read a sentence each out of stack of random Disney, Sesame Street and other character books they all sound the same. If that is all children hear they miss the richness of our language, and actually their ability to think in complex ways is affected. If you read a sentence each of books like this, you hear the difference.

2. Exposure to experience. If you read Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods, you are familiar with the theory that children today have much less real contact with the natural world, and it is affecting them. Even in my own experience, I got to poke in creeks and catch crawdads, hike in woods by myself, eat warm tomatos and corn right out of the garden, and ride my bike all day and stop by the side of the road to eat the lunch I packed. My kids won't have those experiences, and even a school trip to Sunnydale Farm so the kids can line up and pet a cow won't make up for not having the experience of being alone and self-directed in a natural environment. This book doesn't, of course, replace a first hand experience, but I believe can give children some sense of an important experience in our cultural history that most children will not get any other way.

When my 4-year old daughter started lying constantly we tried everything - lectures, books from the library about lying, loss of privileges, etc. When I found this book and read it to her, it was like a light bulb went off in her head. She finally understood and the lying stopped almost overnight. I'd recommend this book to any parent having trouble with a young child telling lies.

I slip this book into the bedtime rotation a couple times per month. Of all the Berenstain Bears books, this one elicits the most uncomfortable looks from my two, young boys.

The book touches on the value of the truth as well as the problems that result from being a tattler. I've found the book to be a great tool for instilling values in our children. The book acts as a springboard to discuss their behavior and any outstanding issues they want to talk about.

The best of the Berenstain Bears books can help a parent reemphasize good values and good manners. I recommend this book for your kids' collection.

Here's some other Berenstain Bears books I recommend:

The Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight
The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Chores
The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners
The Berenstain Bears and Too Much TV
The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers

I remember the Berenstain bears fondly from my childhood. The books are entertaining with nice illustrations, bright colors and the always interesting...talking bears. They introduce life lessons without being overly preachy about. Our two year-old remembers the lessons and we use them regularly to remind him when he slips up. He is just figuring out how to lie ("mommy didn't give me vitamin yet"). He understands when we compare what he says to the book he knows so well. We've got a bunch of these books and we plan to get all of them!

This was a great book. Sometimes you can tell your children something many times, and a book or children's show can suddenly make it click for them. Lots of good lessons here-- always tell the truth, lying breaks the trust between people, and lying makes things complicated and leads to more lies, i.e. When Brother & Sister are asked what happened for the second time, they can't exactly remember how the story went the first time they told it! Stan Berenstain had a wonderful talent for making a life lesson entertaining.

My Son suffers from Silent Reflux and I decided to buy this book to help me understand what's going on. My spouse and I are both Ph.D's and we have a slightly academic approach to things. The book cleared so many unanswered questions for us.

This is the most useful book I have in my stock as a new parent. I would recommend it to all first time, second time and nth time parents. Dr. Vartabedian gives excellent examples throughout the book. If you can identify with one of his case studies it's time to ask your Ped to recommend you to a Ped-GI. Don't put your child on Zantac forever if there is no improvement, seek help from a specialist.

We are going to buy multiple copies of this book and gift it to all our friends who are expecting. A huge number of children have reflux and if you have a happy spitter, you are lucky. However, if your Ped keeps telling you to change formula and wait for the colic to go away, ask right questions. This book is a step by step guide to identify problems of reflux early. It will help you ask the right set of questions to your pediatrician and you can start reflux treatment as early as possible.

I wish our friends had gifted us this book. My child suffered from silent reflux for almost three months. Things got out of hand and now he has terrible feeding aversions.

Dr. Vartabedian also has his own blog: parentingsolved.typepad.com
there are many new updates on this one along with lot of useful information.

A necessary book that is long overdue!

I am so grateful to Dr. Vartabedian for writing this book. I have two children who have reflux. The first is 5 years old and when he was an infant, Zantac was the only drug our pediatrician was willing to prescribe. It didn't work very well, but took the edge off for him and we struggled for years with the sleep issues that resulted from him being in so much pain as an infant.

When our second child came along, now 9 weeks old, and his reflux was WORSE--showing up on the day of his birth, no less--I knew I was going to need more help than our pediatrician had offered the first time. I went online to do research and stumbled across this book. It offers commonsense help and experience. The nearest pediatric gastro is 1 hour away from us and our baby screams from the moment we put him in the carseat to the moment we take him out. Being able to take this book to our (new and more openminded) pediatrician to discuss treatment options was critical to his care.

We are about to try our third reflux medication because the first two simply did not offer much relief to our son who seems to be on the extreme end of spectrum. Without all this good information about treatment options and approaches to positioning etc, we would be in the dark or getting our information from the internet. I would much rather get my information from a health care professional!

Dissemination of this critical information about reflux is so important! I am so angered by the pediatricians who basically patted me on the head and gave me the "colic talk." Telling me to get outside help, go for walks, etc. etc. Outside help isn't always readily available and taking time for ME sounds ludicrous when the reason my baby was crying was because he was in PAIN! These doctors seem to think that they can just call something colic and brush aside your concerns. But anyone in pain deserves relief--adult, child, infant, even pet!

Babies who cry and fuss all day long don't do so for their own entertainment or just to spite their parents. They do so because they are in pain. And it is a pediatricians job to help you manage that pain. All this talk about finding time for me was ridiculous because I would get the break I needed without any outside help, if the baby was more comfortable and I didn't have to hold a screaming baby all day and night too! Babies who are in pain don't sleep very well, or at all--babies who get relief from medication and proper positioning will sleep and moms can get rest then too. That is the real colic solved!

Thank you again, Dr. Vartabedian, for dispelling the myth of colic once and for all and giving moms and babies the power to advocate for themselves!

This is the first review I ever write for a product. When my daughter turned 3 weeks she started being EXTREMELLY fussy. Nothing we did seemed to soothe her and I was tired of people telling me that it would go away once she turned three months or that she could sense my stress/anxiety. I knew something was wrong and that she was in pain. We tried changing formulas and the doctor prescribed medicine for acid reflux. The medicine has helped a lot and now I know it not because she can sense my tension. This is an excellent book to understand what our baby is going through. It has also helped us ask appropriate questions to our pediatrition and explain the condition to others who just don't seem to understand. I highly suggest this book to anyone that has a hard to soothe baby - you will realize that you are not alone and it will help you deal with the situation.

If your baby has "colic" or cries for hours nonstop like they are in pain, this is a MUST read. Our son was born with a handful of GI issues and this book helped us sort through how to address them with the doctors that always seemed to brush him off. It turns out he has serve acid reflux as well as food allergies including milk and soy as discussed in this book. As parents who have not been to med school we still feel lost (and it has been a little over a year) when it comes to the medical specialists on this topic but this book really helped shed some light when we really needed. When a baby is only sleeping for 20 minutes and up all night, something is wrong and parents need answers. Read this book!

So, before I begin my review of this product, here's our background... our son who is currently 6 weeks has had to be sent to the hospital with gas pains so severe that the emergency room doctors were concerned that he might be trying to pass a kidney stone. Turns out he was allergic to soy, we had tried breast, standard formula and lactose intolerance formula. He had a negative reaction to all (including breast believe it or not, I went through tests also to determine what was in my milk even though I was on a mild diet.... cause was deemed later on to be for a substance need, our baby needed rice formula). So..... we tried just the rice formula with the children's mylicon with the VentAire bottles.... somewhat of an improvement, but our child was still needing to go to the doctor weekly for checkups without much success, our pediatrician would even call us daily to see how he was doing. Constipation was questioned, but was never an issue. Our breakthrough occurred when we took our son to a specialist appointment and the lady asking us if our son had excess gas since she noticed that Mylicon was listed as one of his meds. I stated quickly yes and told her of our ordeal. I was told that she was the grandmother of 5 children and a mother of 3 and had tried EVERYTHING to cure their extreme colic. The remedy they found, Hyland's colic tablets, Dr. Brown's bottles, and rice formula. After the doctor appointment I went to the store to give these products a try....... and it was like an angel had spoken to us. Our child could breathe again and was longer tense in the body, as he was making progress against constantly trying to push. I know that I'm being candid but I am hoping that this will help other parents and children that have been or will be in our situation. We are on day 4 of the product switch and WOW, he's a brand new baby! If these products can help a child who's been hospitalized, hopefully these can help yours as well. Pedialyte also works as well to help calm the tummy. I've been using tylenol every 5 hours (excluding when he sleeps) for the first week and have been continuing to use the Mylicon to help with the surface gas. Burping has never been an issue, but his burps and toots have become louder and more productive, sometimes just shifting him in our arms can help him to expel gas! I'll be making this post in numerous areas in hopes to help people.

Hyland's colic tablets, Dr. Brown bottles, Enfamil AR Lipil, infant's tylenol, gas drops is literally our formula to success.

ISBN 059006519x - Usually, when I come across a board book with a spectacularly illustrated cover, I'm let down when I open it up. David Kirk is absolutely fantastic and so, it turns out, is every single page inside.

Miss Spider would like to play, but all the other bugs are afraid of her. Rhyming text counts the bugs, from the two beetles who ran away to the eleven bugs who finally came to visit - bringing twelve flowers as gifts.

It's great, the chance to work on numbers with your child, but for me the illustrations are what knocks it out of the park. The details are excellent: the reflection in the teapot and the twelve cupcakes when her eleven bugs come to visit, for example. The colors are vivid and the images nearly 3D. Board book pages are sturdy and can take a bit of a beating. My single complaint is that the cover board seems to be coated with a rubbery plastic layer which peels fairly easily. The bugs aren't particularly creepy or scary, which works for me - I've got a shortage of Halloween-themed board books and this one is going to fill in. I hardly think anyone will mind!

My 13 month old *LOVES* Miss Spider, and I was getting really sick of Miss Spider's New Car (which is a great book, don't get me wrong, I was just tired of reading it 3x/night.) I went looking for the original Miss Spider's Tea Party in board book format (which you can't find, why is that?) and stumbled across this one and the ABC one. He likes both of them, I slightly prefer this one because frankly it's shorter. The artwork is still the classic David Kirk Miss Spider traditional stuff, not the computer-animated from the TV series stuff. And if you know the original Tea Party story, it's an abbreviated version of that, so it's kind of fun to see where they go with it for the Counting. So all in all, a decent alternative.

A Baby Heatlh Book That Actually Makes Sense

Have you noticed most other pregnancy and baby care books are completely confusing, like the author's don't know what they are talking about. This one was a relief to read, because I could understand what the author was saying. Not that I agreed with everything, but just understanding what the author was saying is a huge step, as other baby books are mostly unintelligible.

The main focus on this book is homeopathy. The author says they did not vaccinate their children but then claimed it was the parents choice. Yet vaccines clearly don't work, and the author could not stand strong on that point. There is a holistic guide to treating many childhood conditions. There is a small but serious flaw, which is to suggest that xylitol should be consumed as a sugar replacement. Xylitol is a processed sugar alcohol and is NOT LEGALLY DECLARED SAFE for consumption. It is only supposed to be used as a cosmetic product, like tooth paste, soap, ect.

You'll probably be satisfied with this book.

All I can say is WOW. I feel like this book has helped me to be a better parent, and I can say...that my daughter has never had and anti-biotic as a result of following this book and visiting Dr. Feder. I have loaned this book to neighbors, family and friends...It is a life saver!

Great book for adults too!

Natural Baby and Childcare is a great book for treating conditions in adults as well as children. While I was visiting my daughter and grandchildren, I came down with a cold, and used Dr. Feder's book to treat my symptoms. The A to Z section on treating illnesses was easy to navigate and understand. I appreciated the guidelines on home treatments and found the right homeopathic medicine for my symptoms. I feel that the treatments allowed me to heal quicker and enjoy my time with my family. I would recommend this book to adults too!

My mom got this for my son because babies see black & white first. This was the first book he really looked at while I was reading to him and the first he reached out to touch. At four months he still LOVES it. I love to watch him look back and forth at the pages. This is now a favorite gift for friends with babies.

My 8 week old granddaughter loved it. She would stare at it and sometimes she would coo and smile. Great book.

I have a stack of the Black and White books on hand to give to friends. It's great to see baby's start to focus on the black and white images, as baby's can see contrasts much better than colors (which are shades of grey for them for awhile).

FABULOUS!

This was recommended by a friend, who although her children are now preteens, did not want to give me this book as a hand-me-down becasue of all the wonderful memories! My daughter is only 3 months old, but every time she sees the panda, she says 'lemmy!' I have no idea where she got 'lemmy,' but this book has stimulated a 3 month old to verbally acknowledge recognition!

Highly Recommend for Baby

My newborn baby loves this book! She recently started focusing more on objects and I was anxious to find a black and white book for stimulation. She really enjoys looking at the animals and it holds her attention for quite awhile. I am amazed how focused and content she is while looking at the images. I was very particular about finding cute illustrations and these baby animal images are adorable.

This book really piques my 20 month old's interest and I find it really beautifully written and presented. It is easy for her to follow and she really feels for the baby when they bunny hops away. It is destined to be a classic!

My Down Syndrome daughter selected this book for my oldest grandson, and he loved it. He has 1 favorite page that he looks at repeatedly because he is attracted to the baby's facial expression. I would like to buy another one--new--for my second grandson and was disappointed to see that Amazon does not have any. I hope the publisher will do another printing because this book was a major hit.

My wife and I both graduated with early childhood education degrees and always love picking up books for children we may have in the future.

I bought this book to add to our collection. One reason I ended up getting it is because our first pet was a dwarf bunny.

The style of this book has a very metallic feeling. It has a semi-olde time feel to it. The colors are very pastelly and sort of dreary feeling...like old color photographs.

The story is short but very cute. It brought a smile to both my wife and my faces.

The pictures in this book are very nice and pertain to the story very well. If the pictures were drawn or digitally done, this book would not be that great. The pictures are really what make this book.

I have used this book with both of my children. Both of them became OBSESSED with this book. I started reading it to my oldest when she was only four months old. We have hundreds of children's books and this is always the number one choice every time. It is so worn that I have had to tape every page where it has been hugged and kissed so much by my kids!!! My youngest, who is two, actually reads it to me..every word!!!! I don't know what it is about this book but my girls have given it two thumbs up!!!

Great find!

I stumbled across this book in a bookstore and was immediately enchanted! The pictures are so cute and the story that goes along with them is charming. Babies love to see pictures of other babies so this is sure to captivate your baby. The words are very rhythmic and one day you may find that your child has memorized all the words! If you are thinking about this book for your baby or as a gift, do not hesitate.

This was not only my favorite Dr. Seuss book but probably my all out favorite book. The story is clever and funny. The pictures are awesome - I remember cracking up at them. There are still some phrases or ideas from the book that I reference in my adult life - the midwinter jicker, sleeping on marshmallow pillows... This is an excellent book for children as it teaches them that you can deal with the difficulties that life throws at you and that nothing is achieved without effort. I love this booked and would recommend it to anyone.

This is a great book. I bought this book because my husband enjoyed this book when he was a child. He still enjoys this book today and reads it to our 6 year old son.

The lesson we learned from this book is there are always some problems no matter where you go.

I highly recommend this book because it's fun to read, educational, and it never gets old.

My dad was, is, and will always be a huge Dr. Seuss fan. He read this, as well as all the other Seuss classics, to me as a child. I had a devil of a time finding it a few years ago; had to special order it. It has an honored place on my bookshelf.

It taught me two valuable lessons: 1) Tackle your problems instead of running away from them, and 2) The grass is not necessarily greener on the other side.

Those two bits of knowledge have stuck with me for many years and led me through many challenging times. Thank you, Dr. Seuss!

What can I say, Dr Seuss is popular for a good reason. These are fun for all ages. The rhyming, the cute stories, the good morals. These books make reading for homework fun.

One for Joseph Campbell

This was my favorite Dr. Seuss, and one of the books that stuck with me. I came across it recently while I also happened to be reading Campbell's Transformations of Myth Through Time.

A young man, beset with the travails of life, sets off to find paradise. The premise having been set, this story is actually predominantly about his many encounters and experiences on the road to paradise -- how he gets conned, imperiled, left to the mercy of the elements, enlisted into a battle he has nothing to do with, lost and alone in a crowd, etc. Having risen to the occasion repeatedly, he arrives at (literally) the door to paradise a changed man. In the end, Dr. Seuss leaves open question of what paradise really is.

This is an archetypal Hero's Journey.

And there is another parallel. Campbell often talked about the danger of concretizing the symbols -- for example that there is a physical holy land, the place where your myth takes place, to which you as a human being must physically travel to touch divinity. The alternative is to recognize your myth as metaphoric, and to recognize that the divinity of your God is your own divinity, and to sanctify and make holy the land and the place where you are, etc. 'Solla Sollew' speaks to this theme.
