One of my favorite Mem Fox books!Review Date: 2008-12-26
We Love Who You Are, Mem Fox.Review Date: 2008-09-03
This book is an example that we are different, but we aren't alone...There are others like us. We ARE all the same inside...
I bought this book in addition to the "never forget a face" memory game for a 3 year olds birthday party. One can never have enough multicultural things in such a global world!
A great look at introducing youngsters to cultural diversityReview Date: 2008-06-24
Whoever you are is great look at introducing youngsters to cultural diversity. "Culture" basically refers to commonalities that run through a group of people with a shared heritage. Sometimes children probably believe that her culture - way of doing things - is the "right" one and that others are a bit "funny." As you read Whoever You Are, you can begin to look at other cultures with your child, aim for an appreciation of differences. Eventually, this will lead to an increased appreciation of the incredible variety of human attributes, flexible thinking, and less prejudice and stereotyping. This type of conversation has to take place. That is why I wrote a children's' book entitled, Dirty Sally..The untold stories of mixed race kids who find a new identity, love, faith and forgiveness through GOD.
There is an interesting story behind the title. I was often taunted or teased about being biracial. Some of my family members and friends called me Dirty Sally. Dirty Sally is an old slavery term used to identify the descendants or offspring of Sally Hemings, a former slave and the late President Thomas Jefferson. Sally Hemings was biracial her mother was ½ white and ½ black and her father white. This book focuses on the misconceptions surrounding racial identity and the importance of choosing one's racial identity. Dirty Sally is a must read not only for inter-racial families, but for all parents hoping to instill in their children a sense of understanding and compassion. I believe that change requires resistance and within that process we can help heal some of the wounds that continue to inflict on racially mixed children. Purchase available on Amazon.com the ISBN# is 9781432707743

Touch and Feel FarmReview Date: 2008-07-30
You're invited to meet the animals on the farm, offering children a tactile experience that non-farm dwellers might otherwise miss out on completely.
That the book also introduces new adjectives into the vocabularies of small readers is a great plus. The only potential negative is that, if you get a used copy, the Touch and Feel parts aren't what they ought to be. The pig's spongy nose, in particular, can get completely flattened and the touchable spot of the chick on the cover will fade after many pettings. Buy it new, and it's well worth it; used, not so much.

Possible dynamics for the existance of gnomesReview Date: 2008-05-16
Type face is easy to read. Style of writing is easy to comprehend.
It's highly illustrated and the ideas cleverly presented.
I was expecting the usual fae-inspired absolute in-depth fluff, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that this book instead is an interesting anthology of life of the gnomes from hat to toe. Daily life from day to day through all seasons.
There's no definite storyline, but there are many stories scattered throughout. At the end of the book, strangely, it kept eluding to the fact that there may or may not have been gnome involvement. I never figured out why the authors wanted to add that bit of sentiment unless it was to protect their reputations. It doesn't matter to me if gnomes were involved or not.
I enjoyed reading the book. They covered most any aspect that one can think of in pondering the dynamics of existence of such a tiny being. I was especially impressed that there was very little fluff or magic in the telling about the gnomes.
This book would be an interesting addition to a nature folks fancier collection because of it's presentation of ideas for possible ways of survival of nature folks in the woodlands.

An excellent book to bridge the gap between childhood fantasy and adult realityReview Date: 2007-08-29
I "learned" a great deal from this book, for example I was unaware that there are six different types of gnomes. They are:
*) Woodland gnome
*) Dun gnome
*) Garden gnome
*) Farm gnome
*) House gnome
*) Siberian gnome
Illustrations accompany most of the descriptions; they are very well done, adding a great deal of charm to the book.
If you are looking for a way to amuse your children for hours, then read this book to them. It is a fascinating fantasy, presented in such a serious manner, it will make them believe that gnomes do in fact exist.

GREAT BOOK ON SEVEAL LEVELS - AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHTReview Date: 2008-04-19
Anyway, this is the story of a very old Siamese cat by the name of Simon. He is blind, deaf and his bones ache and creak. Simon has lived a long life with a very loving family and now spends most of his time in his calico chair looking out into space and dreaming of his life since he was a kitten. The book reviews this old cat's life from the time he was a kitten to the resent. Delightful pictures and wonderful text tell his story. Then, feeling absolutely useless in his dotage, one Tuesday night, Simon sticks his bony old legs in the air and breaths his last....or so he thinks!
Suddenly, plunk, his loving human family drop a new kitten right on Simon's belly. Simon suddenly has a new life. This new little member of the family becomes Simon's charge and Simon his teacher. This is absolutely wonderful.
While this is the story of an old cat, living in a loving home, it is actually the story of all of us, or how all of us should be anyway, as we grow older. What an excellent way to teach children of the aging process in a very gentle and happy way. It is also an excellent way to teach those of us well in to our dotage that life is not over until it is over.
Splendid and lively art work is found in this work and while not as wild as that found in Skippyjon books, it is quite appropriate for this particular story. The text is very well done. I, like another reviewer was hesitant at first about reading this one as I felt it was going to have a sad ending and I avoid books like that at all cost. I was very well pleased and I need not have feared. This work is a must for cat lovers of all ages in particular, animal lovers in general, and all good hearted people. Most importantly though, the kids all seem to love it. I should also not that this author wrote I know n Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie which is a wonderful work also.

Inspirational- a must read for every pregnant woman!!!!Review Date: 2008-08-02
One mother describes how she used perineal massage to birth a very large baby without a stitch or tear. She describes the steps very simply. I will be sharing this story with an expectant mother I know who has had large babies and painful recoveries from tears in the past.
A client recently told me that she'd like to have an unmedicated birth. I thought of this book immediately and will be letting her read it before her birth. I know that it will give her the confidence and inspiration to go forward with her choice.
My favorite element of this book is that at the end of each story, the mothers tell what inspired them. (Books, magazines, classes, etc.) They give advice as to things that helped them through the delivery as well. As an expectant mother, it was like getting advice from friends!
A wonderful book- I give it my highest recommendation!!!!

I'm fascinated to discover that other little girls love it, too.Review Date: 2008-07-14
Perhaps it was feeling that I was in the wrong family by some evil accident. I've been in therapy for many years, and needed every minute of it, so that feeling was accurate.
Perhaps it was the feeling, which also proved accurate, that my life would improve as soon as I got my own friends who cared about me which happened in early high school.
I held fiercely to the spirit of this book for many years.
When I found it, I took it to my therapist to prove to her that, even when I was little I felt strongly about these issues.
I also loved school and considered it my saving grace.
I read voraciously as soon as I learned how. And this is the only book from early on that I can clearly remember.
Anyone who wants to start a lovers of Little Witch club, get in touch with me.
I still read LOTS of fantasy books.

A Byron Barton ClassicReview Date: 2006-05-24
Byron Barton really seems to "get it" -- what captivates a child. Bold illustrations, nice use of color, and just enough detail for a board book.
Board books aren't necessarily meant to teach or be encyclopedic -- they're like good friends that you visit every day, and look forward to doing so. "Machines At Work" is just that -- a good friend.
We've named the characters, we make construction sounds when we read, and we love the lunch break and the end of the day pages.
Solidly constructed, wonderfully illustrated, and age appropriate, "Machines At Work" is a winner, sure to please any pre-reader. Thank you, Byron Barton!
Simplicity is its strong suit!Review Date: 2006-09-16
The story (as it is) involves a diverse work crew doing stuff with simple 4-5 word narration for each page. It is so simple, it is almost zen-like. And Connor came to be able to repeat each phrase as we turned the page - as soon as I opened the cover he would gleefully shoud out "Hey, you guys!". Reading this to him at bedtime has become one of the fondest memories of my fatherhood experience, and hopefully one of my son's funnest moments.
