Noted quill worker "gives up the shop" & tells the real deal

Review Date: 1997-01-21
Ms. Heinbusch does all re-creators of indigenous American culture a great service with the publication of her book. The basic techniques of porcupine quill work embroidery have long been available in various published forms. Much of the old techniques have been lost forever and we the modern crafters need to do our best to re-learn , recreate or create new techniques. Ms. Heinbusch, very early in her book, reveals a treasure trove of her personal experimentation in the dying of the quills. She has been able through trial and error to get a beautiful simulation of the "old time" colors using modern fabric dyes. She spells out the eaxct formulas in almost foolproof recipes. The book included photos of the completed techinques as well as illustrations in the working of the particular technique. A useful chapter in making buckskin had been included and here too, Ms.Heinbusch is free with tricks and tips. I have a few quilling tricks up my sleeve that are not revealed here, but the quillworkers that taught them to me have sworn me to secrecy. I have never met Ms. Heinbusch, yet she has given freely of what she knows to those that learn it, Thank You

Writing under the guise of Don Pendelton here, Alan Philipson delivers what he has been doing for well over 25 years - all out explosive action/adventure.

Except he's gotten better at it with time and age.

This terrific action/adventure novel has it all - submarines, spestnaz, gimmicks and gadgets, colorful and cool characters, and an abundance of adventure mixed with high-octane action that only one of the biggest and best action writers out there today can deliver.

A must read.

My first Stony Man, and I enjoyed it

Right off the bat I will admit that I have never read a Stony Man book before, so I have no idea how the characters and storyline compare to any other entry in the series. That being said, I really enjoyed this book quite a bit.

For starters, the bulk of the action takes place in and around the Pacific Northwest where I grew up. The author clearly has intimate knowledge of the areas around Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula, and has definitely spent some time on the Washington State Ferry system. The action kicks off with a Russian sub grounding itself in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Able Team is called to be on hand. When the main threat is revealed, the fate of millions of innocent lives are at stake.

The action is vividly rendered, and the story propels along at a breakneck pace. The entire story takes place over the course of only a few hours, and the Able Team story is counterpointed by the work of Phoenix Force in coordination with spetsnaz soldiers in the Republic of Georgia. If you have a weak stomach you might want to avoid this book, because the author really knows how to go for the gross-out. Of course, that's one of the reasons I liked it...

Major General Smith's personal account of one arm of the air war over Europe
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-20
Major General Smith organized and led major bombing missions over Europe during World War II. His planes launched from their bases in England and ranged over Europe, all the way to Berlin. He ordered and saw many things and after the air war began winding down in Europe, he was transferred back to the Pentagon where he was engaged in staff work.
His perspective on the war is not much different from others who have put forward their stories of being involved in the strategic bombing of Axis targets. Most of the descriptions are about planning and tactics, what needed to be done to make the probability of a successful attack and return as high as possible. Smith was certainly a brave and dedicated soldier, he volunteered for dangerous missions when it was not necessary.
I cannot say that this book adds any general information about the air war over Europe that is not found elsewhere, although his personal perspective on the 384th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force provides a unique perspective. Those men risked their lives in so many ways, keeping the military pressure on Germany when that was the only way in which it could be done. They were talented, brave and dedicated, doing more than their share to win the war.

Dale told me that keeping diaries during the war was strictly prohibited....so he reconstructed the air battles over Germany years later. As a bomb group leader, his descriptions of losing planes and their crews brings the incredible air war effort into vivid detail. As a commander who was responsible for sending men on dangerous missions, he had to have a steel resolve about the rightness of the war, his country and his God. This is a real narrative which includes insight into his troubled family life--an unwelcome by-product of fighting a war half a world away.

Now this writer can write a Deathlands!!

I've been an avid fan of this series since the late eighties, and the series is still one of my all-time favorite series.

Since the death of the original writer, some filler writers have done excellent jobs at this series. But lately, with lame ones such as before this one, it has dropped somewhat.

But this writer, along with the one who wrote Devil Riders, is top-notch entertainment reading. Great work, Victor Milan!

MILAN BRINGS DEATHLANDS OUT OF 3 BOOK MIRE!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-30
Shaking Earth is a huge improvement of the last 3 novels. Victor Milan's debut here is a breath of fresh air. He manages to keep the characters and storyline lovingly brought to life and in popularity that the late, great Laurence James did.

The backdrop of a violent, earth shaking and mutant-riddled Mexico is colorfully brought to life by Milan. He manages to give an exciting page-turning action/adventure read that Hollywood really needs to take a gander at.

The love between Ryan Cawdor and Krysty Wroth, along with their wishes for a brighter future, is finally not ignored by this author. Its been too long of a time since they have conveyed their feelings, or have a mind to consider maybe settling down in the beautiful but eruptive landscape of what was once Mexico City.

If you are looking for a fast-paced, action-filled story, then check this one out. Way to go, Mr. Milan! Keep up the great work, and bring back Deathlands bigger and badder than ever with your next installment.

Mr. Vick gathers the data that is available to him and puts it in one place. Perhaps an eye opener for anyone that has never been detailed to air base defense but otherwise simply a review of numbers. No real insight is offered in the author's review of the statistics.

The book does, however, create a desire to read the source material a little more closely. If you're looking strictly for numbers, this RAND book is perfect. For a thorough analysis... look elsewhere.

Maximum payback with little cost

Review Date: 2000-08-30
This book, I believe, is based on the author research for RAND. It is an excellent book about air bases defense against attacks from ground forces. Based on detailed case studies, the author pointed out the vulnerability of modern air bases to ground attacks. Although the author also described the effective measures used by USAF to defend air bases in Vietnam, it is very clear that a clever enemy can use a relative small unit to harrass and even cause quite a damage to the air bases.

No matter how powerful an air force is in the air, it is still very vulnerable on the ground. And this is really a problem that none of the modern air forces can igonore.

An alternative to the previous reviewer (April 11, 2000): This is a catalogue of an "exhibition of selected photographs from the collection of Warren Adelson and Ira Spanierman" (from the title page). Just over half (28 of 50) of these photographs are studio shots & this in no way detracts from the dignity (or for that matter, the "truth") of the subjects. If one wants to be skeptical, it would be just as easy to pose the subjects out of doors with all of their "props". This book is a catalogue for a museum, and the photographs can be appreciated for what they are: a mere glimpse of a lost people & their way of life. If one were to read the preface by the museum director and the introduction by Pulitzer Prize winner N. Scott Momaday, it would be obvious that many of these ARE romanticized images & that the exhibit was as much about the photographers & the documentation of a transitional period in American history as it was about the subjects of the photographs themselves. As such, it is an excellent book.

American Indian Photographic Images
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-11
This catalogue is comprised of fifty photographs of American Indians. Primarily taken within the studio setting, the sitters are taken out of context and presented in a romanticized view of the American Indian prevalent of time. They are photographed in the confines of traditional portraiture which makes it seems as if the clothes, weapons, pipes and such are props. The plain backdrops make the images similar to a museum setting where such artifacts would be displayed, again out of context. If it is understood that these images are distorted and not a truthful account of the subjects, then the photographs can be appreciated visually as beautiful photographs and also for something other than they were intended for. Instead of being a document of the American Indian people, it becomes a document of the attitudes towards American Indian people.

Very readable account of Americans at their best.....

Review Date: 2004-02-08
In 215 pages, the author, John Curtis Perry managed to captured the basic essence of the American Occupation of Japan after World War II. From the way he writes, it appears to be one of America's finest hours, both as a nation and as a people. Rarely has the two foes who fought such a bitter war against each other, kiss and made up so quickly. As a people, Americans proves to be very magnanimous victors and interestingly enough, the Japanese were very agreeable losers. The book also revealed Douglas MacArthur at his best and considering all the things that should have gone wrong, it was pretty amazing that it went so right. Short, interesting and well written, a very good introductory book on the subject matter.

Don't miss it!

A collector's item, a treat for the history buff. Jim Haskins' little known gem traces the history of aviation and the contributions of many African Americans to aviation and aerospace, from pioneer Eugene Bullard, from 1920s stunt aviator Bessie Coleman, to modern astronauts such as Dr. Mae Jemison.

Includes many photographs of superstars such as pioneers Eugene Bullard and Hubert Julian, daredevil stunt pilot Bessie Coleman, the Tuskegee Airmen, Willa Brown, Janet Waterford-Bragg, transcontinental aviators C. Albert Anderson and Dr. Albert E. Forsythe, General Benjamin O. Davis and son, space shuttle astronauts Guion Bluford, Ronald McNair, Frederick Gregory, Charles Bolden, Mae Jemison, and many other aviators, developers, flight instructors, and financiers, too many to list here.

Black Eagles offers a fascinating history of aviation, from the perspective of the African-American experience.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in US history, African-American history, and the history of aviation.
