Where does this book belong in the post 9-11 world?

I read this in 1999 for my US Foreign Policy class at NYU. It saddened me a little to wonder where this country would fit now that the Cold War was over. Sure, we'd had foreign conflicts in the decade; the 1st Gulf War, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti, and the Kenya Embassy bombings. But would we be a world power without the huge Soviet enemy?
9-11 changed all that. In the space of one day, US Foreign Policy was changed. All the rules of engagement and negotiation were obsolete. Terrorism was redefined and the rules of the Geneva Convention would be bent or ignored. Now what?
I haven't read this book in years, so I wonder where it belongs? The Cold War is nealry forgotten, and with good reason. We overestimated the Soviet Union's power in the first place, so we were in fear of an incompetent enemy. But are the events repeating themselves? Are we in real danger of terrorism? If there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, what about "dirty bombs"?

Maybe future generations will read htis book for history class, to see how things were before 9-11. I wouldn't mind an update.

Flying High Eagle

Review Date: 1997-07-02
In the best tradition of its predecessors, the fifth volume of the well-known Eagle series brings a whole set of new articles to discuss the American role in the post-Cold war world. Dealing with main trends and issues of today's U.S foreign policy, Eagle Adrift presents to the reader a very compelling evaluation of the constraints posed to strategic thinking nowadays: the increased relevance of domestic politics in the realm of international affairs. More and more, foreign policy is being invaded by internal considerations, weakening its long time vision. In all three sections of Eagle, the authors contributing to this edition will deal with this pervasive matter openly or sometimes indirectly. For those who wish to have a comprehensive understanding of American foreign policy, this Eagle is essential. Although its analysis lack some of the novelty and ingenuity that their authors ask of formulators and decision makers, Eagle provides a very good overview of America's problems in the scenario. Could our Eagle writers have been bolder? Hard to say. These are difficult transitional times where only one certainty remains: at the end of the century, in spite of flying unknown skies sometimes, the eagle still needs, and wishes, to land in all worlds

This book gave a very good feel for the state of Alaska and the diverse issues facing native people in remote villages while being very appealing to the sports enthusiast. Mike D'Orso made me feel like I was an active participant and I could feel the visceral energy of the whole cast as the Fort Yukon Eagles fought their way to the finish of the basketball season.

Good mix of culture, hoops, and history yet some issues

Eagle Blue provided great insight into the game of basketball within the small towns of Alaska, specifically among native american communities. The author did an outstanding job of combining culture, hoops, and history within the story. This book also included some interesting political questions regarding government subsidies, drilling for oil, and information on the state and people of Alaska.
As a whole I loved the first half of the book but was somewhat disappointed in the sportswriting done by D'Orso. His basketball descriptions left a great deal to be desired. As an example the author uses players numbers to describe the action, for instance; #12 comes back with a three, or #13 with a floater. On a personal note I also have a problem when an adult writer spends time with high school students who are engaging in illegal activities, drinking /smoking. Much like my similiar feelings with the author of Fall Rivers Dream.
However, that being said a good read with many wonderful insights.

Eagle Days is great account of a young Marine's war experience

Very interesting book about a young Marine's experiences in Viet Nam. Written as a journal it gives a unique perspective on a soldier's daily challenges during war. Author Griffis's role as both a defense counsel and a prosecuter exposes us to some of the lesser known trials and tribulations that soldiers encounter during war time. It also does a good job of showing the sacrifices that soldiers are more than willing to make when called upon to do so by their country.

An Intriguing Look

Written in journal entries, "Eagle Days" is an interesting look at the day-to-day life of a man at war. One would expect that such a book might be dry as West Texas land, but Mr. Griffis has written with wry humor that lets one see the young man behind the uniform. Overall, I recommend the book not only for those who have been to war, but for those who have not. The name of war has changed, but not the pride and bravery of the soldier who fights it.

This is the best Stony Man book to come out since Dragonfire!! The sequel is good as well, but the first half rocks! There is plenty of plot to keep all of the characters busy without being thrown to the sidelines or shoved onto the back burner. The characterizations are spot on and the action just builds and builds. Also highly recommended is the Cutting Audio multicast version of the audiobooks--it will blow you away! (they have an online site where you can download the book).

Dave Bowers has shown us all once again his superb writing skills and in-depth Numismatic knowledge with this fairly new release on what just may be the worlds most popular gold coin, the US Double Eagle. All that is missing from this superb date by date analysis of the US double eagle gold coins guidebook is up to date pricing information, which of course has seen many changes ( most to the upside) since the release of this book.
Whether you are investing in these coins or collecting them , this is one of the guidebooks you need to study this facinating and important series of US gold coins. As a professional coin dealer and specialist in double eagles, I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in these coins. Buy the book before you buy the coins!

President James K. Polk needs 50,000 volunteers to join the army in anticipation of a war with Mexico. Alamo, Alex, and Able Kane are already in the army and are determined to do their best for God and for Texas. War is always terrible, wrecking havoc on innocent people, and the Kane brothers are in the thick of it. Strong Christians, they believe their faith in God will carry them through safely, but they will be tested to the limit. High is the Eagle is the final book in this series, and as always, Al and Joanna Lacy have written a strong, historically accurate story stitched together with love, faith, trust, and courage.

The Kane's return for one last time...
This is the final installment in The Kane Legacy. From the moment I began this series, I was hooked. I have eagerly awaited each new installment. It is sad that this is the last of the series. Perhaps they have a new one in mind.
The Kane Legacy has followed the Kane family from the docks in New York to the Texas frontier. Alamo Kane and his brothers came home for a rest, hoping for peace. Santa Ana is not ready to admit defeat and plans to attack American soldiers.
Al and Joanne Lacy are extremely talented authors. They have successful brought history to life in a fictional form. They incorporated faith, hope, and love into their story without being preachy. Fans of Christian fiction will enjoy High Is The Eagle.

Having an original copy (the one with the writer on the front cover in reproductin native garb), I can say that I found the basic book highly infomative on basic native garb. Well written. Nicely illustrated. A good book to have on the subject.

Excellant reading.

If you are looking for new design ideas or if you have ever been curious about what the First Americans might have worn a couple of hundred years ago, this book offers a wealth of information.

Here you can find detailed drawings of blouses, skirts, men's shirts and leggings, moccasins and head coverings. Although the book doesn't include patterns per se, the written instructions appear to be detailed enough for most readers with some sewing experience to follow. (As a very amateur seamstress, I have to admit I would have liked more detailed explanations, espeically for the finger weaving section).

Since this book includes clothing of all the Great Lakes tribes, you can see the variations in design and construction between the peoples of that area. However, as Hartman points out, it is almost impossible to identify clothing as belonging to a specific tribe. Contact among these people offered the opportunity for trade as well as imitation of dress styles. Looking at the many drawings, you can see the influence that the French and other Europeans had on clothing and jewelry design.

However, this is more than just a sewing or design book. In addition to the pictures and how-to sections, Hartman also includes quite a bit of historical and cultural information. She briefly mentions the role of trade silver used for decoration. (If this is a subject that interests you, you may want to look at "The Covenant Chain, Indian Ceremonial and Trade Silver," by N. Jaye Fredrickson.)

AUTHOR MATTHEW ALGEO DOES A GREAT JOB TELLING US ABOUT THE STEELERS AND EAGLES WHO FOR ONE YEAR MERGED AS ONE TEAM, THE STEAGLES. DURING WWII, EVERYTHING WAS RATIONED, ESPECIALLY MEN WHO WERE CALLED TO FIGHT THE WAR. ONLY 4F AND MEN WHO WORKED IN A JOB IMPORTANT TO THE WAR EFFORT WERE AVAILABLE TO PLAY. BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY, RATIONING AND SMALL NUMBER OF MEN AVAILABLE A FEW TEAMS IN THE NFL FOLDED. BUT TWO TEAMS MERGED TO BECOME ONE FOR JUST ONE SEASON. THE BOOK FOCUSES ON THE COACHES WHO HATED EACH OTHER AND THE PLAYERS WHO BARELY KNEW EACH OTHER. A DETAILED GAME BY GAME DESCRIPTION IS A HIGHLIGHT TO THIS BOOK ALONG WITH THE NOSTALGIC MEMORIES OF WWII AND LIFE IN THE 1940'S. MANY MANY PEOPLE ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS MUST READ LIKE ART ROONEY, BERT BELL AND GREASY NEALE. A HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS.

So, there's the same guys and gals in the gym in the morning. Every morning, same people, same time. Suddenly you become gym buddies. Occasionally we find ourselves discussing movies, music and books. My gym buddy Barry, who over the ten years I have seen him, has never been without Penn State logo athletic clothes, passed Matthew Algeo's Last Team Standing to me.

Despite a three foot pile of books in the "to read" section, I gravitated to this delightful, surprising book and knocked it off in three days.

While I am no longer an NFL fan, this book about the one year merger between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 was as much a discourse on the homefront during World War II as it was a football book. Algeo does a fine job by setting the tone of the era. Here is an NFL populated with 4-F players, riddled with perforated eardrums, flat feet, bleeding ulcers. An NFL with eight teams in the league. Players earning $200 per game for a ten day season, and the Steagles (the unofficial nickname) being enjoined by their respective owners to work full time jobs in the defense industry.

Sell out crowds of 34,000. Tickets at $3.50. A disgruntled lineman returning to the game only to find out that the new rules require that he wear a helmet, war-time travel restrictions, 1943 steel pennies, limited substitutions, and 60-minute men.

As we gird ourselves for the late January/early February media assault that has become the Super Bowl it is an interesting time to read about the earlier days of the league and some truly tough players.

This book is beautifully laid out with color photos on every page and a menu-style format. But the recipes are the real stars...tasty versions of traditional American favorite dishes. Nothing too exotic, just delicious basic food that will suit most guests' tastes. The recipes are from the Lion House restaurant in Salt Lake City, an extension of the Mormon Church. Content ranges from casual get-together fare like Baked Chili with Cornbread Muffins to elegant dishes such as Prime Rib and Crown Roast of Pork. Especially good recipes for several different homemade rolls and salads. All recipes use fairly basic ingredients that you can get at any store and methods are usually simple, but results look "gourmet". There is also a chapter on entertaining basics like table settings.

Quest for the Eagle Feather is a good book. I liked it because it was very interesting to me. This book is about three eagle clan brothers that set out on a quest to see an eagle fly. Only this way can they learn the greatest secret of the eagle clan. This is a book I enjoied and am pretty sure anyone else would enjoy it to.
