Cold weather, hot basketballReview Date: 2008-01-03
Good mix of culture, hoops, and history yet some issuesReview Date: 2008-03-08
As a whole I loved the first half of the book but was somewhat disappointed in the sportswriting done by D'Orso. His basketball descriptions left a great deal to be desired. As an example the author uses players numbers to describe the action, for instance; #12 comes back with a three, or #13 with a floater. On a personal note I also have a problem when an adult writer spends time with high school students who are engaging in illegal activities, drinking /smoking. Much like my similiar feelings with the author of Fall Rivers Dream.
However, that being said a good read with many wonderful insights.

The Kane's return for one last time...
This is the final installment in The Kane Legacy. From the moment I began this series, I was hooked. I have eagerly awaited each new installment. It is sad that this is the last of the series. Perhaps they have a new one in mind.
The Kane Legacy has followed the Kane family from the docks in New York to the Texas frontier. Alamo Kane and his brothers came home for a rest, hoping for peace. Santa Ana is not ready to admit defeat and plans to attack American soldiers.
Al and Joanne Lacy are extremely talented authors. They have successful brought history to life in a fictional form. They incorporated faith, hope, and love into their story without being preachy. Fans of Christian fiction will enjoy High Is The Eagle.

Excellant reading.
Authentic & UsefulReview Date: 2001-02-22
Here you can find detailed drawings of blouses, skirts, men's shirts and leggings, moccasins and head coverings. Although the book doesn't include patterns per se, the written instructions appear to be detailed enough for most readers with some sewing experience to follow. (As a very amateur seamstress, I have to admit I would have liked more detailed explanations, espeically for the finger weaving section).
Since this book includes clothing of all the Great Lakes tribes, you can see the variations in design and construction between the peoples of that area. However, as Hartman points out, it is almost impossible to identify clothing as belonging to a specific tribe. Contact among these people offered the opportunity for trade as well as imitation of dress styles. Looking at the many drawings, you can see the influence that the French and other Europeans had on clothing and jewelry design.
However, this is more than just a sewing or design book. In addition to the pictures and how-to sections, Hartman also includes quite a bit of historical and cultural information. She briefly mentions the role of trade silver used for decoration. (If this is a subject that interests you, you may want to look at "The Covenant Chain, Indian Ceremonial and Trade Silver," by N. Jaye Fredrickson.)

LAST TEAM STANDING IS OUTSTANDINGReview Date: 2008-02-09
A delightful surpriseReview Date: 2008-01-19
Despite a three foot pile of books in the "to read" section, I gravitated to this delightful, surprising book and knocked it off in three days.
While I am no longer an NFL fan, this book about the one year merger between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 was as much a discourse on the homefront during World War II as it was a football book. Algeo does a fine job by setting the tone of the era. Here is an NFL populated with 4-F players, riddled with perforated eardrums, flat feet, bleeding ulcers. An NFL with eight teams in the league. Players earning $200 per game for a ten day season, and the Steagles (the unofficial nickname) being enjoined by their respective owners to work full time jobs in the defense industry.
Sell out crowds of 34,000. Tickets at $3.50. A disgruntled lineman returning to the game only to find out that the new rules require that he wear a helmet, war-time travel restrictions, 1943 steel pennies, limited substitutions, and 60-minute men.
As we gird ourselves for the late January/early February media assault that has become the Super Bowl it is an interesting time to read about the earlier days of the league and some truly tough players.

9-11 changed all that. In the space of one day, US Foreign Policy was changed. All the rules of engagement and negotiation were obsolete. Terrorism was redefined and the rules of the Geneva Convention would be bent or ignored. Now what?
I haven't read this book in years, so I wonder where it belongs? The Cold War is nealry forgotten, and with good reason. We overestimated the Soviet Union's power in the first place, so we were in fear of an incompetent enemy. But are the events repeating themselves? Are we in real danger of terrorism? If there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, what about "dirty bombs"?
Maybe future generations will read htis book for history class, to see how things were before 9-11. I wouldn't mind an update.
